I just read a quote yesterday from McDonagh who said Boyle hits hard and it amps the team up when he is on his game.

I have to laugh at this cult mentality that has somehow come to the conclusion that a 6'7 240lb man hits soft. Go ask the opposition if they like being hit by Boyle.

How would McD know?

Laws of physics do not apply to Boyle. No wonder he lets go of so many 6mph bombs. 240lbs? please.

Well, hes on the team.

I think the better question is how you and others would know that Boyle is entirely useless.

never said he was ENTIRELY useless.

just VERY limited and it's easy to spot the very useless when you have been playing and watching the sport for over 35 years.

I may not be an expert, but I can tell when a guy is getting played above his skill level and out of a position that would better suit his tools.

I can also tell when a guy is effective physically.

I give the guy all the credit in the world for being a top notch PK'er. And if he was played and payed like a 4th liner, I'd have no issues with the guy.

But he's paid to be more than a 4th line PK'er. He's given the minutes and responsibilities of a 3rd liner.

He's not cut out for that.

Lets put it this way. As long as Boyle is the teams 3rd line center, we will not win a Stanley Cup.

Brilliant. The Rangers have won exactly 1 cup in the last 70+ years, but its Brian Boyle at the 3C thats paralyzing this team's chances. You've really gone out on a limb with this analysis. I look forward to your "Ha, I told you so" in May/June.

LMAO

a pretty sturdy limb I wnet out on there no?

I thought that was pretty funny when I wrote it.

I agree. He may not look like he is hitting hard, but he sure as hell does. A man that big even at half speed is going to hurt.

I dont think you need to be hit full speed by Boyle to know he can hit pretty hard, especially when youve been practicing with him the last 2+ years.

... when he does engage along the walls and in the corners, I'm embarrassed in how often he's the guy picking himself up off the ice.

As a fellow tall man hockey player, the one thing I'll say is that while it's frustrating to see Boyle falling to the ice when he makes hits so often, there is a simple physics reason: his height. Tall players have a higher center of gravity, making them inherently easier to knock over or lose their balance. Even though his size is an asset in many ways, it is at least part of the puzzle in his struggle to stay on his skates.

Did a quick search and Boyle is in the top 10 in height among all players in the NHL. Looking through the top of this list, I'm seeing a bunch of players who aren't much better on their skates than Boyle -- basically its Chara and Pronger who are without a doubt better. The rest of the players at or above Boyle's height are pretty much as bad or worse skaters than him. And even Chara, if you watch him play, often ends up flopping around on the ice awkwardly. Here is the list.

Now, yes, he's in the NHL and needs to be better on this, and I would hope it is something he is working on (balance exercises, leg and core training). But, speaking from experience, its a lot harder to stay standing - even on what would seem like standard physical plays - the taller you are. And before I get the "learn to skate" comments, while I'm obviously not in the NHL, I've played hockey for 20 years... 12 of those at a relatively competitive level (last 8 or so, mostly beer leagues, intramurals, club teams, and pick up games) so its not like I'm one of the wall huggers at public skate.
