Was at the game last night. A great night for everyone but four guys; Bickel, Boyle, Eminger and Gaborik.

What became so clear last night is the difference between Miller and Boyle (and Kreider because unfortunately he plays like Boyle in this regard). First off the puck followed JT around last night which is great, but that's not the point. The point is he possesses the puck in the D-zone. Boyle treats it like a hot potato and too often his harried attempts to clear the zone do not lead to clears. Too often instead of corralling the puck and making a play he attempts a backhand or one handed poke to get a clear and it just doesn't get out. Also, and this is amazing, he runs around alot in the D zone. There were a few times where he JT and Gabby were all around the puck along the boards with BB being the last one to arrive.

Bottom line, since Stu dropped the gloves, Boyle was our worst player last night. Stu for a defenseman is also a nightmare with the puck on his stick along the boards. Both guys played a very shaky game.

On the flip side Pyatt, Halp and Powe were noticeable in a good way and should be the foundation of a good bottom 6.

Considering the similarity of their roles, Boyle is getting outplayed in nearly every facet of the game by 37 year old Jeff Halpern. Maybe it would be a mistake to overplay Halpern at this point in his career, but he should be getting Boyle's minutes out there. He's faster, smarter, and makes a bigger difference defensively.

100% agree. Powe also has looked great.

What worries me even more is that everyone looked great last night...except for Boyle. Granted everyone always looks great against TB (except Boyle).

He doesn't use his size, at all. He's basically a brontosaurus. He adds ZERO offense. If he has any trade value, at all, trade him at the deadline.

Completely agree here. He had a slow start this season which put me in the skeptics corner, but I'm gladly eating crow on that. Love his presence.

No idea what happened to Boyle. Rangers definitely need a reliable 3rd line center at the deadline. I like the way Halpy has been playing, but I think if we ask him to do too much, we'll regret it.

Yeah, plus the fact that all it will take is an injury to a 37 year old Halpern and the team is without a 3rd line center again. Need depth there.

Even if completely healthy, I don't think Halpern is a reasonable option at 3rd line center. I think the only player on the team that has the ability to be an acceptable 3rd line center is Boyle, and he isn't playing like it. They have one month and 16 games to evaluate before the trade deadline to see if they need an upgrade.

I can't think of any decent centers that might be available, so let's hope Boyle turns it around.

2013 UFA's
Weiss
Ribeiro
Antropov
Bozak
Gordon

It's possible teams look to dump some players at this deadline so they have more room over the summer as well.

Can't see any of those players taking the bulk of the defensive load, besides Gordon who would provide less offense than Boyle.

I think Bozak would be a good fit actually.

Great on face-offs, pretty good defensively, handles the puck well. He just plays above his head in Toronto.

I would definitely take a flyer on Bozak. Not sure Toronto will be selling, though. Also, I just assumed he would be going to Vancouver for Luongo eventually .

Well, if theres one thing I've learned on hfboards, its that your 3rd line center shouldnt be worrying about defense - he should be worrying about scoring 50 points.
