People didn't hate Boyle last year for no reason. He had large stretches where he was ass last year too. Shutdown Boyle is awesome, but is rare.

People have hated Boyle over the last 18 months because hes a big guy that neither lays people out or scores.

And no, Im not saying hes playing well this season, but he certainly was a useful resource to last year's team.

2013 UFA's
Weiss
Ribeiro
Antropov
Bozak
Gordon

It's possible teams look to dump some players at this deadline so they have more room over the summer as well.

I liked Antropov when he was here, but I just don't see him fitting in a 3C role. Halpern works best as a 4th liner for me, but I think he's a better option for the 3rd line than Boyle.

Torts trusts BB in all situations and values his not being on for a goal against more than he'll not be on for a goal for . This is painfully obvious.
BB would be an awesome addition to a team with all kinds of offensive firepower in top 6-8 forwards where he could just so draws and use his big body to take up space in defensive zone and be a human puck shield .

Just some updated stats since he has returned from his 3 game benching (AKA our last longest winning streak):

8 GP, -4, 0 Points, 4 Blocks (1 in the last 5), 9 SOG (1 in the last 5); the Rangers are 3-3-2 since his fateful return, including a 4 game losing streak.

Aw-ful. He really does contribute nothing and he still racks up the minutes. And while he does have a good amount of hits (36 in those 8 GP), they have to be the weakest excuses for hits that have no impact on the play whatsoever.

I found it funny that he was mentioned in today's article on Yahoo! Sports on player who have yet to score this year:

Brian Boyle, New York Rangers (17 games)

Boyle has gone 17 games without a goal, and has been held without a shot on goal in eight of them. In his first 17 games last season, he had one goal and two assists; maybe he’s just a slow starter no matter when the season starts? Or maybe a hair cut and a new stick, both of which Boyle received recently, will do the trick?

They just forgot to mention he hasn't had a 'fast start' in 3 years...

But, but, but, but, but, he play defense goodlike.

Clearly the return of Boyle was to blame for our losing streak and not the fact that our best forward was injured and we were missing 2 of our top 4 defensemen at points. This board cracks me up. :biglaugh:

I agree the losing streak had more to do with Nash missing. However, nothing he has shown this season warrants him being the team's third line center. Having him in that position is really killing this team's scoring depth. The team was scoring goals like crazy when he was out and this was the lineup:

Hags - Step - Nash
Pyatt - Richards - Gabby
Kreider - Miller - Cally
Asham - Halpern - Powe

I'm all for trading Boyle. His $1.7 cap hit can be used elsewhere with much greater benefit. The guy is an offensive black hole.

Oh now you like stats?

I haven't heard anyone make the case that he's playing well. He's still getting his ice time because of his previous body of work and the lack of other options.

Good to know. Ranger fans have never accepted a stat they don't want to. When Tom Poti led the team in blocked shots those were just 123 shots that hit him.

stats have their role in evaluation; watching the player is more important if you see him enough. I don't care about these stats. I can see that he is extremely flawed and right now is holding back his linemates on the 3rd line. Move him to the 4th line and the argument ends.

The honeymoon has to be over for this guy pretty soon, 17 games, 1 point, a -7, 13:43 ATOI... The only redeeming stat I can find is his 55.4% on FO's. That's a lot of ice time for a guy with one point.

Scoring goals like crazy is a bit of a stretch. We beat up Tampa and the Islanders, two teams with below average defense and shoddy goaltending, and squeaked out a SO win in Boston while giving up 40 shots on goal.

I think if the Rangers had a replacement for Boyle lined up, or if he was garnering any interest in trade, something would have been done by now.

This x 100000...we were finally rolling 4 lines and doing great. Then Boston gets a couple of late lucky bounces, we win in a shootout, and back to the Big Ol' Brian Boyle era...ugh

He is an adequate 4th liner. At this point, 3rd line is too high for him. I am starting to get pissed seeing him out there with Gaborik.

I think that has more to do with Gaborik not having a spot than anything else. Boyle isn't capable of centering a scoring line. That's clear as day. He was a solid 3rd line center for most of his tenure here, but maybe that incident against Ottawa knocked a screw loose. He looks like a completely different player.

Yep. Honestly, if I was the Rangers I look to move him and try to bring in a 3c. He kills any puck movement.

Rolling 4 lines? Are you counting different line permutations? Asham played 6:10, 8:30 and 9:10 in those three games.

And I don't think Tortorella reacted to the lucky bounces. If they didn't score those two goals I would imagine Boyle would still have gotten in the next game. He appeared to lose faith in Miller as a center.

How about Cullen for the third line?

Flippula would be great, but I doubt Detroit is looking to shop him right now.
