I like Brian Boyle. As a 4th liner, he's as effective as they get. Solid PKer, decent on faceoffs, isn't afraid to hit and and is a good shot blocker.

I do have a problem with him getting close to 20 minutes a night. I expect him to get dealt at the trade deadline, but if he should get playing time in the playoffs over Asham.

exactly.. id like to see him as a 4th line center who gets a good amount of time on the PK and a odd shift here or there in front of the net on the PP screening the goalie.

he should also be taking important draws in the defensive own at key points in the game as much as possible.

if he's used where he should be, he'll be effective.

that being said, i do like him, but he sucks so far this year and im anxious to see how he responds to his time in the press box. hopefully it lights a fire under him and he gets going.

His penalty killing has been awesome, but aside from that he's been poor.

I'll say it again, although I am sure most of the Boyle lovers--which I am convinced are some of his 50 brothers and sisters--have blocked me a long time ago when I started telling the truth about Boyle:

Up until this benching, Boyle has been a 4th line player, playing on the '3rd line' and getting 2nd line minutes; completely unacceptable...

So many people will bring up his stats saying he is more than adequate as a 3rd line center, but I guess they do not watch him on the ice. NO hockey sense, NO finish, NO IDEA how to use his size. He is a fringe 4th line player who is a great 13th player...ship him out for anything of use...

Isn't it simple? He's a 3rd/4th tweener for a reason. he sucks at several things and is good-excellent at other things. He also can improve on some things like being more of a pri** out there like against ottowa. But due mostly to offensive shortcomings and athelticism of course he sucks in many areas compared to other players. He's being paid appropriate to his abilities and production I think. Also he is more of a benefit to the team and locker room than a negative.

My Boyle hate comes from the fact that he is a huge guy who plays like a 5'10 *****. I don't even care if the guy scored any more than what he does because I don't expect much, but if he could just hit hard and ad some grit to his game I would give him a pass.

Until then. Sorry. He sucks!

It wasent though. It was only slightly better than his normal production. Problem is talking about regression to the mean only being a handful of goals.

But assuming he keeps getting over 150 shots on net, he is roughly a 10-15 goal scorer. If he gets his shots back up to 200+ then he's a 20 goal scorer a season.

Nothing fluky about it.

it certainly was fluky, boyle isnt a goal scorer in any way shape or form, hes a 4th liner that plays hard enough to chip in 10-15 dirty goals, that season he got lucky being in the right place at the right time, not many of his goals were pretty or real goal scorer goals, alot of his goals were fortunate bounces that came right to his stick. He can throw 300 shots on net and id bet anything 10 of them wouldnt make their way in because none of his shots come from good positions and he doesnt have a good shot, hes a big dude with a seriously hampering inability to put himself in any kind of decent position to get a good shot off, everytime he drives to the net defensemen have their way with him and he takes a shot from the bottom of the circle and it goes right into the goalies pads.

that being said, i am a boyle fan, a fan of the 4th liner center, whose good on faceoffs, isnt overpaid, plays with a ton of heart and hits every and anything he can. i understand all the criticism of him not playing like hes a big man or having little offensive talent, but hes not here to score goals, hes a great penalty killer and defensive center, idk about everyone else but thats all i expect him to be, everyone knew the 20 goals was a nice fluke but those that expected him to keep it up are likely the ones that hate him, which imo isnt really warranted.

Who is 6'7" and plays to his size? Very few players.

Being 2nd on the team in hits isn't good enough I suppose.

I think benching Boyle will come up big as it will finally wake him up and he will play like we expect him to and keep his spot in the lineup.

So people hate him because the coach likes him? Makes sense. By your logic we should be rolling two lines late in the third period sound we can't ice the third line center.

point a:
no, not at all. the coach liked prust. the coach didn't play prust where prust didn't belong. people liked prust. it has nothing to do with the coach liking him-- it has to do with him being forced into roles that he doesn't belong in and performing poorly at them. he's a great shutdown/checking center. that's it. that's all he brings.**edit** the BULK of what he brings

point b:
okay-- see now you're kind of taking what i said and taking it word for word when i thought it was pretty clearly exaggerated for effect. no, really... let's shift 2 lines for 10m. :sarcasm:

let me be more specific: if you're in a playoff game and you're down 3 goals in the final 10 minutes of the 3rd period of an playoff game that puts you 1 loss from elimination-- boyle should not get a shift over richards OR stepan--especially when richards has been pulling miracles in the series. boyle should not get more shifts than either one of them in that situation. boyle should not be on the ice for 4 out of 6 shifts in that situation. boyle should not be playing every important draw in a game where he is below 40% on faceoffs and you have a center over 60%. up a goal? sure, play boyle w/ 10m left up a goal or two or three... but not when we're behind

boyle should not be on the ice more than richards or stepan in a game that you are losing by more than 1 goal period-- let alone in the third period. by having boyle out there, the team is suffering.

i don't like boyle playing that role. i don't think anybody does. when tortorella keeps doing it, the only logical option is to hate the player for not being better at it. i bet most people that hate boyle hate tortorella, too. i'd rather see boyle gone than see boyle getting significantly more ice time than our 1 and 2 in a playoff game we're behind in.

Im convinced the Boyle hate is rooted in this romantic and unattainable vision of the Rangers rolling 4 legitimate scoring lines. Boyle obviously isnt part of the plans with that pipedream.

In reality, blunting the oppositions offensive momentum can be just as important and thats why Boyle is an important asset.

2 minutes left in a game, nursing a 1 goal lead. Do you want a 19 year old out there, or Brian Boyle??

Well Miller sort of did that during the gold medal game in the WJC and he assisted on Trocheck's EN goal.

Im completely shocked torts has him benched again...that being said always thought he was a 4th liner, 3rd on a really good day. Id take him over asham though.

This pretty vs. ugly goal thing doesnt mean anything.

Even if you completely ignore his 20 goal season, he has shot about 7-8% in his career.

180 shots at 7% is about 13 goals.

Thats not fluky. Thats consistent production in the range of 10-15 goals.

If he had 300 shots, he would be expected to have over 20 goals. Thats shooting only 7%.

His goal scoring is excellent production from a 4th line center. And its decent production for a 3rd liner.

His goal scoring is fine. Far bigger issue is his assist numbers. Or lack there of. Though Im sure part of that could be his linemates. Neither Prust or Feds were great scorers.

It's Jekyll and Hyde with Boyle. He has games where he's great and his effort really shows, and other games where he's just a large pylon.

So sick hearing about boyle. I mean its not like he is a big part of our team. Look I have no problem if he comes back but he has to produce otherwise we have to move on because in a shortened season we need to go with what works. So far infusing younger talent has made a difference

The Boyle discussion is an important and legitimate one.

Its not our fault you're distracted by shiny things and quite clearly think that Kreider and Miller are now "big part(s) of the team" with their 7 combined games of regular season NHL experience.

I'm pro Boyle from the day he grabbed a roster spot with overachieving in the preseason. He battled hard scored some goals and made the team think twice about dumping him in Hartford. He was awesome that season. Was sniping goals off the rush, and was part of my favorite line with Prust.

Last season he disappointed. Lost that jump he had in his step. Was also less physical, and wasn't winning battles.

This season He's mimicking last season but I am still pro-Boyle. Despite the fact that he hasent played to potential, he to me is still an asset. The way I see it is he is part of the teams core. I want see more fire from him. With that said though, if a player is available of greater worth to this team at the deadline I would certainly pull the trigger. Again though, only if that said player is of great worth. If not I'm good with him in the bottom 6. Serviceable guy who knows the system.

He could be one of the best 4th liners in the league if used properly but Torts is an ignoramus, and the fanbase is worse.
