I may be out of the loop here with San Jose, but aren't most of their woes due to subpar goaltending and too much money spent on over the hill defensemen?

This could be a huge gamble here, but considering people are floating the rumors of a Vlasic buyout, how about a Price for Vlasic flip?

Make the money near even? Their contract length is the same.

2022 1st round pick
Vlasic
Reimer

Lets them free up 1.25M the first year, and then obviously they're on the hook for more cap in years 2-4. Although you'd pay it in a goalie anyway. A huge gamble dependent on Price being able to return to form. But if Vlasic is truly buyout bound, might as well take the gamble.

Price
Oilers' 2022 2nd rd pick
Maybe flip a contract/AHL/B prospect

Habs are trying to speed up the rebuild and Allen is doing a good job. Gives them more flexibility in years 2 to 4 with 3.5M less on the cap. Maybe a homecoming could help Vlasic have a bit of a second life for another season or two.
The Sharks have Hill, Kahkonen, and Reimer. They don’t need to swap goaltending. They need to pick between Hill and Reimer and trade them this summer. Vlasic probably has a spot next season given the team’s moving of Middleton and Knyzhov being out all season.

Maybe if Montreal wanted to trade Petry and Byron for Vlasic then something could be done but Vlasic and Petry could prevent that from happening.

And there’s no room for Petry with Burns and EK already on the right with Merkley more than deserving a spot and Meloche deserving a spot.

I think they might just have to ride it out with Vlasic and/or hope he decides to ltiRetire.... If he had a year or two at $7m -- retain a little bit of money and move him on, but with 4 full years remaining, I just can't see anyone wanting to take on a contract that they have 99% confidence in it being bad throughout the duration.

As for Burns, you might be able to make a case for him to be traded post July 1, when teams have missed out on UFA defencemen, and his bonus has been paid. Once paid, Burns will have $13m left on his contract over 3 years.... that's really not all that bad.

The Challenge for him will be that good teams generally aren't going to have $8m in cap space to spare, and certainly will not project to have that cap space for the next 3 years. That leaves his ideal market to be budget-oriented teams that are looking to take a step forward.

Nashville, Ottawa, Seattle, and New Jersey could all be suitors... maybe even Dallas if they lose Klingberg and San Jose retains a bit. Question there of course -- he has a highly restrictive NTC (3 teams he can be traded to) -- would he waive to any of these places?

I’d buy Petry out if there’s no belief he can be a second pairing guy. Easier buyout at the least.

“Would be open?” To trading either franchise crippling contact? Lol

The sharks would do unspeakable things to move both for zero return lol

I think the sense is that the hole hasn’t been filled in net though. The Kahkonen trade should be proof of that. Hill hasn’t been great this year and has struggled to stay healthy. Reimer played well above his career avg - but is also aging and isn’t going to be a long term solution. Kahkonen is still relatively young, but hasn’t shown he can be a starter yet. Sub .910 save percent over a 55 game NHL career.

I don’t think a Vlasic for Price swap would be the worst idea. Price is a proven starter. He certainly has the highest upside of everyone in discussion. Worst case LTIR is still better than Vlasic’s contract staying on the books.

Not when Price is 34 and has missed a whole season. Big contracts in net are just awful when they can’t be depended upon from year to year.

Why would Habs do such a terrible trade??

Petry is still a very effective top4 dman. Vlasic is AHL level at this point

Again, Why would Habs trade a LTIR contract vs one who'd they need to keep in their books? Makes zero sense whatsoever. Habs don't need the cap space they are rebuilding

They wouldn't but unless someone is willing to do such a terrible trade that Vlasic would waive his NMC for, he will be kept or bought out. The Sharks wouldn't do some Vlasic for Price sort of trade.

Habs would't either. Vlasic's value is a LOT more terrible than Price.

Price, when healthy, is a #1G in this league. He'll eithe rbe a #1G, or be on LRIT. Vlasic is a AHL dman paid like a top2 dman and one that can't be burried in LTIR cause he's healthy, and wants to play.

Vlasic is still legitimately third pairing quality in the NHL but those are a dime a dozen. The Sharks would only be able to get rid of him if they had the equivalent of four first rounders to move with him or take back a similarly bad contract. There’s a few but the Sharks would probably look at a forward to make it worthwhile or they’ll just wait until next summer when they may need space to re-sign Meier assuming he would agree to terms.

I mean are we sure Price will come back the same player? Who says he doesn’t come back and want to play but he’s actually not great? I’m not saying Habs should do the trade I just think counting on him to be a 1G is at least a bit optimistic and not really realistic. Sharks have really no reason to trade Vlasic for anything that adds cap or term. If that’s the case, we just buy him out.

Price also hasn't been a great goalie since the 2018-19 season. The Sharks need a great regular season goalie to have a real shot at the playoffs. If they aren't getting that, and they aren't with Price, they need to keep their commitments to the positions short and cheap.

I could maybe see the Devils consider Burns. Subban leaving after this season and we are very thin at RHD ( prospects as well ) . If it was 2 years left on is contract I would be all over it , but his current contract would make it hard to spend that much % of the cap on D. ( Hamilton and whatever Severson signs for ) That is a crap ton of $$ spent on RHD.
Hamilton Burns Severson as your right side D is a little overkill. Maybe if they trade Severson before he hits UFA after next season ?

Vlasic if he was a UFA is a 1 to 2 million dollar 1 or 2 year contract player you put as your #6 playing 14 minutes a night.

He has 0 value. His value would be how much a team wants to take him on.

Burns could find a taker but his contract is high and contenders wouldn't afford the cap hit. 50% retention probably makes him really affordable and would give the Sharks assets. Burns being added to a top 4 needing his skill sets would definitely be huge.

My thoughts on them both.

Again, this is why I said it's a bit of a gamble there. Price does give you good steetches of hockey when it matters the most. And maybe Reimer & Co haven't been abysmal, but the point remains that Price either playing well, or on LTIR is much better on the books than Vlasic who's an upcoming buyout that will impact the cap for a while.

I figured the swap of drafting position (mid 2nd rounder for a mid 1st) was probably enticing enough for Mtl to consider the long term cap relief in later years from the two contracts who have the same length remaining in exchange for giving away the better piece.

But alright, just a proposal like many other 🤷🏻‍♂️

And I'm saying that gamble isn't worth taking if you're the Sharks.
