Move Burns to forward so the defensive liabilities don’t completely destroy what little value he has left. That’s the only way he can be salvaged IMO.
Ristolainen is much worse and got basically a 5x5. Burns doesn't need to be salvaged. He's pretty set on the trade market. It won't be much but he doesn't need to be moved to forward.

Rist is also 27 years old. Burns is a bad defenseman despite the points, but could be a decent forward without having to deal with the responsibilities he tends to neglect.

The Sharks are in win now mode. The Hertl extension assures that. I doubt they would move Burns.

I think we would be quite lucky to rid ourselves of either contact for minimal assets. Burns is pretty okay when utilized properly, would be good as a 3D and on a PP. Currently playing at 5-6M value. Vlasic is super cooked. Currently playing at 1M value

I'm just saying that Risto is a bad defenseman period and still valued highly and Burns is better by a shit ton. I'm not worried about moving him when it's time.

Are you from 2016 and somehow got lost in 2022? What is high profile about Vlasic in 2022?

He's been SHIT for 5-6 years now.

Vlasic certainly has. Burns has been okay, but he's not a 26 minute defenseman anymore, like he's still continued to be used as.

Vlasic might have the worst contract for a defenseman in the entire league and he's sucked since even before getting that contract.
Most of OP posts make no sense what so ever, more of the same here

I like the idea of Burns to Sabres.
I would trade Vlasic for some other bad contracts and hope that change of scenery works. Vlasic to Sens for White and Zaitsev or Montreal for Gallagher or Flyers for Van Riemsdyk or Flames for Monahan and Lucic.

Vlasic for Gallagher ?

Vlasic is more expensive, but has 1 less year.

Though Gallagher might be hurt quite often soon
Jesus that's awful for the Habs. WTF?

Vlasic has had a history of underperforming. Gallagher has been injured this year. Let's give Gally another year or 2 before putting him in Pickles category of capdump.

Do you think the Sharks would be open to trading either of their high profile dmen at the draft? For a re-tooling club that's not expected to win now, it makes no sense to have 3 high profile dmen eating up that much cap. They would get pretty good returns for either dman. I could see the Jets having interest in Brent Burns.

You think the Sharks would get "a good return" for Vlasic?

That's absurd.

He would be absolutely impossible to move. For my money, he has the worst contract in all of hockey. He isn't worth even a fraction of his bloated cap and hasn't been worth it for at least two calendar years.

Seems like a change-of-scenary trade, a bad contract swap, is the best option for Vlasic. Skinner, Seguin, Price...

I think I'd rather just buy him out.

Skinner and Seguin are top 6 forwards, and the Sharks are lacking them, whereas Vlasic is a 6/7 d-man. The incremental value those players brings is probably worth the 2-3M difference per year. That said, I think both those forwards are likely to get worse, and the buyout is just as bad, or in Seguin's case, far worse than Vlasic's.

Vlasic has two really bad buyout years 3 and 4 years down the line, which suck, but it is what it is.

This thread should probably be titled

“How much does SJ need to pay to move Vlasic?”

I’m guessing based on performance, term and cap hit it will take at least a couple 1sts

San Jose should just buy out Vlasic. Sharks can save more than $12m in cap space over the next 4 years, and in the 4 years where they don't get cap savings the buy-out figure is not that bad: $1,687,500m. Not great, but it can be swallowed, especially considering they get far more in cap savings in the previous 4 years.

Waiting another year or two doesn't improve the savings or the penalties that much, so just bite the bullet and do it this summer.

Burns can probably be traded, but would require retention, like OEL. Unlike OEL, he's still productive offensively. He'd probably be better with a quality defensive D-man to back him up. He only has 3 years left on his contract, so that also has value.

Carolina was interested in Klingberg, so they could be one team interested in Burns with some retention, and they have a good stable of prospects too.

I do think Burns has value, but would require $1m-$1,25m of retention, which also isn't horrible considering the cap savings SJ would receive.
