TSN: Brendan Shanahan named President of Toronto Maple Leafs

I think a lot of people are over-looking the "alternate governor" part of Shanahan's job title.

That could really be what provides him with the tools he needs to turn this team into a success story. Even the way it just rolls off the tongue..."alternate governor."

Plus, the logic and consistency Shanahan applied when handing down discipline bodes well for the coming seasons.

Peter DeBoer, who coached Kadri in Kitchener: "This is the type of kid you win championships with."

Of course he'd say that he coached him. You should hear the things he says about Clarkson.

Put him on his NHL team with his job on the line and anyone with any semblance of creativity + suspect grinder level will be sat. Especially if they're young.

Though Kadri's familiarity with Debo might buy him some more time.

Obviously you guys will prefer who you prefer as a fanbase. Just cautioning you on Deboer.

Our current system is garbage. I would rather wins than stats. Let's just get that that out of the way before you manage to avoid the question again.

I'm honestly curious, do you think it's impossible to have a good coach run a strong system defensively while also allowing our creative players to be themselves? Limiting an explosive player like Kessel is just as stupid as playing 0 defense...I just don't see why you think it has to be one or the other.

You seem to view it as a choice...either nobody puts up numbers and we win, or everyone goes for "flash" as you like to call it, and we lose. I couldn't give less of a crap about these guys' stats if we were winning, but if we had a good coach who could employ a strong defensive system while allowing the offensive guys to do their thing, I don't see how this is such a problem for you.

Let's not be in denial. It is a choice, look at how this team has played under 2 coach's. Almost identical.

You are missing the point, LA Mike Richards and Drew Doughty can up their points totals by 20 if they were as selfish as this Leafs team, but they choose to play defence first because the goal is to win.

They know sacrificing a high risk game for a safer game, is good for the team.

Do these players do this?

It's cute because you actually think Kadri would play.

Did I miss where Henrique didn't play? 18 minutes for a 23/24 year old is really good, which is around the age of Kadri and Gardiner. That's more then Elias and Zubrus. Zajac had plenty of ice time a few years ago as well.

It can't be worst then playing McClement more then Kadri. It really can't.

I strongly disagree with you. Babcock didn't even go over offence when he coached the men's Canadian hockey team, he stressed the importance of defense and stated these guys know how to score. Kessel has shown this year that he wants to win, and by bringing in a coach to be strictly defensive minded with his system and wins games and all the players buy into it, than he would buy into it. Carlyle never had these guys sold into his style of play, for whatever reasons Carlyle lost the team and guys were scrambling on the ice all year long. Carlyle sat guys for making mistakes early in the season and didn't sit older players for making the same mistakes or worse, to me that set the tone.

alternate governor = alternate GM? as in he gets final say on all hockey decisions?

what does an alternate governor do?

I'm not sold on Shanahan. Is he just a TROLL for the Detroit organization, or, the other 29 NHL teams in general? Can WE trust him to do everything to BRING us a Stanley Cup? Is he just a way for the NHL to monitor and control our franchise?

:shakehead

Well, yes and no! I'm concerned that Shanahan is not the best choice for the position. He has to have a little compassion, and love in his heart, for the franchise where he had so much success as a player. No?

So, do you think that was an issue with Dryden when he was president?

The team sucks.

Are people still thinking this is a good team?

So is it the players or the highly regarded coaches?

The players didn't make up the team, management did.

Management either made mistakes with the coaches or the players.

It isn't the fault of a GM who was fired over 6 years ago!!!!

I would be happy if we lose no less than a 3rd of this team this summer.

This team is incapable of playing defence, they are not the brightest bunch either. People are fooling themselves if they think this is a good team.

As long as players get 80 points, 60, 50, they are content we have good players.

Good players play good D, sacrificing individual accomplishments. We have players playing for individual goals here. That's a problem right there.

People who think you either have a scoring team or a defensive team are lost. Completely lost.

Clearly, watching other teams play on a regular basis is in order.

...as long as he doesn't have to take a hit to do it, you mean.

I agree the team never bought into Carlyle's system, but I have yet to be convinced that it's primarily the coaches fault for this.

When you have both, you are usually a top 6 team in your conference, if not a contender.

He sat Henrique when he was up here his rookie year. Henrique only played because of injuries. He would have likely sat Henrique if he wasn't on a big boy contract. Anyone with a big boy contract and/or veteran status will play no questions asked.

The Larsson, Gelinas, Loktionov, Josefson, Brunner's of the world will have to play a flawless game or be benched for entire periods or scratched for months at a time.

Deboer has a history of being **** with young players. Look at how he left Florida;

There seems to be more of a relaxed confidence in the (first-place) Panthers dressing room where players have admitted they're not as afraid to make mistakes under rookie head coach Kevin Dineen than they were with DeBoer, whose coaching methods were formed in the juniors.

"The two years of experience behind me is probably it,'' Panthers defenseman Dmitry Kulikov said was the main reason for his blossoming two-way game. "You've got more freedom to do what you want on the ice. You feel if you make a mistake you can make up for it on the next shift.

"With Pete, it's one mistake and you're like shaking for the rest of the game.''

Panthers forward Michal Repik played 55 games in three seasons for DeBoer while being shuttled back and forth from Rochester, then their AHL affiliate.

"Last year I came here from the farm team to make an impression,'' Repik said. "To go out there you are scared to play; that's not the right thing for us.

"Obviously, you'll be tight anyway but you want to be relaxed. I hoped if you made a bad play you don't get yelled at and the coach will help pick you up and give you confidence, too.''

He set back our organization developmentally at least 3 years.

There's a reason his career pattern has been: success - fail - fail - fired - success - fail - fail - hopefully fired.

He doesn't let the prospects develop and play important roles so eventually they're forced into it if his GM can't pull a rabbit out of his hate and they suck.

Good points and definitely some cause for concern. I'm not sure how the prospects/players listed other then Larsson and Henrique would be much better had they been with another team though.

If there's any coach who would make Clarkson a better player, it's DeBoer.

But I wouldn't want him anywhere near the team.
