Howden doesn’t need bites to be sent to the abyss
For sure. And I think it may happen. But they’ll move guys first who bring back a return. They’ll let Howden go without a second thought when it becomes even mildly necessary. Is what it’s looking like, to me.

Deterrence doesn't exist in the modern NHL.
It never did LMAO. Players love to talk like it did but look at the stuff going on the 80s and 90s, even with guys like Probert around there "protecting" the stars. BS. Dirty stuff every game, especially the stickwork...

The only real deterrence for dirty plays in the NHL are suspensions that hit the wallet. Wilson is losing over 300k$ over his latest hit. That's what going to hurt him, not a guy who maybe could break his nose (which there aren't that many in the league to begin with).

Ryan Lindgren makes the team tough. He makes the team harder to play against. He's a player who is actually good at his job (playing defense), plays a very physical style without taking bad penalties or taking himself out of position, stands up for teammates, and just shows a dogged determination in everything he does. No one wants to play against Ryan Lindgren.

Brendan Lemieux is not Ryan Lindgren. He takes silly penalties, chases hits, and does more yapping than anything else. Okay great, he's an excellent fighter, I'm sure the other guys who choose to fight him realize that and say maybe next time I won't fight him and will instead just crosscheck him a few times. As I said earlier, big f***ing deal.

Lemieux is just not a good player. He could be a good, effective, physical, agitating bottom six player, but he doesn't seem to really understand what he needs to do to be successful. We're not better or tougher with him in the lineup, were just a team that has a guy who talks shit and can fight.

I'm necessarily a can but he answered the bell when he needed too.
Who does that now?
JG putting all his cards on Smith?
Who can't even handle an NHL shift on his best day?
I'm not necessarily a can but the Rangers led the league in fights last year and are tied for first this year.

If you really care about it, don't worry, because it's something we do.

This year has been disappointing to say the least. Coaching is a big issue. Nothing for Deangelo. Nothing for Lemieux.
The DeAngelo situation is still a head scratcher for me. Things were good enough with him and the team to give him a new big contract and then three weeks into the season he’s persona non grata. Doesn’t add up. So bizarre.

We pray to the lord, amen

Maybe because we don't see behind the scenes.

I agree, like, 99%. The game people fondly recall when they're talking of guys who were deterrents was dirty as f*** and every team had several guys who would cheap shot opponents all game. Mark f***ing Messier would butt-end, spear, slash ankles, throw elbows, etc. He was never really deterred. No one was.

The 1% where I don't totally agree is I think the absence of the instigator did lead to some amount of restraint, as guys could literally jump off the bench and chase you down and pound you. It's why everyone in the NHL used to be pretty tough--you had to be because you needed to be able to at least serviceably defend yourself if someone came hunting you.

But yeah, deterrence is largely a myth.

Howden is not getting moved so long as Quinn's here. Quit dreaming.

In all seriousness, Buchnevich is a good example of meaningful snarl attracted to a good player. Works really hard. He's the only guy off the top of my head that I remember ever actually doing anything to Marchand.

Him and Lindgren. Eight more of them please.
The fact that he's a master pigeon whisperer makes him all the more appealing and scary at the same time.

Kind of redundant and hasn't developed (yet?) into the hopeful agitating, semi regularly contributing in offense/big hits/grinding top nine. Oh, well. The Rangers and the coaching staff literally need the fourth line to play with no question marks. Lemieux has question marks.
