After the sweep to the Canes, Gorton said we need to be tougher to play against. I know there's more than 1 type of tough to play against but we're going to really follow up that end of year speech with losing Tony DeAngelo, Brendan Lemieux, Jesper Fast, and in the off season Brendan Smith? Is ALF going to be the resident meat head to scrum it up?

I'm not one for TOFFNESS but boy we're gonna be rolling a chuck E. Cheese line up next year. Bunch of angsty teenagers and some mellowed out moms and dads popping xanax at the bar.
I agree. But I haven’t seen our team really getting roughed up lately. And while we don’t have a “tough” guy, really. We also don’t have many guys who could be considered “easy pickings”. I mean, is anyone f***ing with Miller or Lindgren or Trouba? I suppose I could see Fox or even Kakko needing a hand here and there but so far it hasn’t happened. Though I do like to see guys step up to back up a teammate.

Ya. I'm not subscribing to the traditional idea of toughness. I think Gorton meant more competitive toughness and blue collar play style but still.

Ross Johnston was waiver and cleared, maybe the Rangers can trade that new 4th for him?

Again Disclaimer: I am not lamenting the loss of Lemieux, more so the Rangers odds of addressing the lack of toughness issue without screwing it up, I find questionable.
It's an open secret the Rangers front office are admirers Reaves and made an offer for him before he re-signed with Vegas. I just don't think that despite the "we want to be hard to play against" mantra the front office has been preaching necessarily means adding a Reaves or a Johnson.

I know you’re joking, but I think this move - and how they’ve handled Lemieux throughout - is illustrative of the FO prioritizing the top six - making sure they have a core nailed down - and being relatively indifferent to the rest of the roster. Which, to me, makes sense in this cap situation. They’ll shed the low-ceiling guys without a second thought.
Kind of the opposite of the Islanders.
I wish I were joking, I don't care about Lemieux being traded, more so Howden at any raise is not a good idea, and them trying to now go out and make their 4th line tougher by surrounding Howden at the center of it, I just have a bad feeling about that.

For some reason they feel the need to have 3 goalies on the roster so Brendan gets the boot because he’s a generally useless player

Simple as that

Kinkaid is stashed on the taxi

it comes down to Lemieux 1.55 vs others at under 1 million

Barron can earn a spot in the near future too

Lemieux is mediocre at best and I've been saying it for two seasons. He's a decent pest but he's on his ass more often than not and chases the play as a result. His offensive skills suck. In general he just doesn't bring a whole lot to the table.

We're no "softer" without Lemieux. His brand of toughness is pushing guys after the whistle. Big f***ing deal.

I'd love a tough guy that can play and was hoping that was Lemieux, but in reality he just kind of sucked. I won't miss him and neither will the team.

honestly Lemieux kinda ruined his reputation with the Gudbranson thing last year

after that nonsense he basically never got. a penalty call in his favor again. could recall several instances where he got penalties for very little physically and guys assaulting him with gloves on got nothing

Miller wouldn’t hurt a fly lol
Lindgren is an awful fighter. I love the edge he plays with but he gets beat up every time. He’s also only 6’ & 191lbs
Trouba is strong but he plays without a pulse the majority of the time, a lot like Kreider in that regard

The top six is in flux long-term too though, no one knows what they're gonna do with Buchnevich, Strome and Zibanejad.
True. I just mean they’re going to throw out fifty Lemieuxs - and probably attached draft picks - for better or worse - before they risk a guy who they consider a foundation piece.
This move is making me think there will be some more casualties coming. I wonder if they’re readying to re-sign Buchnevich too, maybe.

Miller has played 30 games. Truth is we don't know how aggressive he will be once he has a couple of years under his belt. I love having a guy in the lineup who can drop them and change momentum. Lemieux didn't do that. Seems like a selfish player with AHL skills. Again, addition by subtraction.

I never liked the idea that your 4th line should do designated 4th line stuff. Forechecking should exist throughout your lineup and the 4th line should have a guy capable of scoring a point once in awhile.

We should move in that direction.
Guys like Rooney and Blackwell is the perfect modern 4th liner. Speed and cycling should be able to be done competently on all four lines. The good Rangers teams of the mid 2010's were built like this. They cycled like hell and had guys in the bottom six that could win a playoff game by being able to pot one.

These players are available in UFA every year for league minimum or under $1 million. This summer will be no exception with a flat cap. Just need to have the pro scouts do their job.

If everyone lives up to their potential, there's enough to have 4 capable lines
