I'm wondering if they should try Gallagher on the left wing. My main resoning, other than positional needs, is that Gallagher is most and foremost a scorer, in the sense that playmaking isn't part of his game. If you place him on the left side, it gives him a better angle. And you know what he does, he shoots the puck whenever he gets it. Having a better angle could improve his game.

On one hand, why not?

On the other hand, it wouldn't change much, his muffin shot it always in the goalie's crest and he can't score from more than 3 feet out.

He's done as a top 6 player on a potentially contending team.

Never, ever played there and too old to adapt now at NHL level. Never had the tendancy either to switch side during action like Caufield is doing all the time. He doesn't have a good shot anyway. 95% of his goals are from goal mouth.

Watching him play since the 2021 covid playoffs, there is absolutely nothing that would make me feel confident he will be hitting anything close to 30 goals.

However, one thing Gallagher kept mentioning in his season ending presser is how he finally has the opportunity to build is body back up properly, so let's hope that helps. It's plausible to say that this was a factor given that the cup was presented in July last year, with camps opening up in September. That's the shortest turnaround I've ever seen in any year, and it probably affects a gym rat like Gallagher more than most players.
And he was injured often over the last two seasons.

Gallagher @ 5 years 6.5 mil

Or

Corey Perry @ 5 years 6.5 mil

Who do you take and why? I’m dumping Gallagher and taking Perry without thinking twice.
I mean, Perry for his leadership, but he's just as done. One of the slowest guys in the league, 5 years is also way too many.

Just about every team has a bad contract, how would you like to be stuck with the Tavares contract, as a previous poster said he'll be well rested and Marty will know how to use him properly. Let's wait and see till we write this guy off for good.

We absolutely need to unload him somehow... Just like Koivu, great warrior, like the guy, but we need a change of leadership and culture. Luckily, we have the future leaders in Suzuki, Caufield and soon to be Wright, so no stupid signing like the Gomez/Gionta era needed.

Gallagher contract is much worst than John Tavares in every department from money to term remaining.

Well not money, because it's 5mil less, but I agree that Tavares has much greater impact than Gallagher.

Good thing, if we retain on Gallagher's contract he could be easy to trade and for a good return.

Dont you mention Saku in the same breath as Brendan.
Why ? Koivu was our best player late 90s, early 00s, but he was not a HOF caliber player, nothing to build a shrine over.

Gosh…I get so annoyed when someone post Gallagher and Koivu in the same sentence.

I don't... Koivu was a better player, but he was not the God some made him to be. Good but not great player. I think too many posters here grew up with a Koivu poster on their wall...

I swear to god if they name him captain I’m becoming a leafs fan

Don't worry, Gallagher doesn't have what it takes to be named captain. He's too insolent to be the lead dog. He couldn't even taunt effectively if he were. I don't think he wants to be named captain either, he's more like Dionysus than Apollo.

He certainly cannot do worse than last season. He will be well rested and healed for the next. Let's wait.
He is a professional and trains very hard, hopefully he has learned to adapt and train to improve what he needs to improve on. If this season is equal to the previous one, that would be a huge liability.

Perry is better and a much better leader too. Plus he can play PP unlike Broken Gallagher
The thing with Perry is that he is so damn hockey smart. Makes the right play, knows when to get involved and when to skate away. Knows how to agitate without drawing a penalty. All the little things Gallagher just sucks at.
