Player Discussion Brendan Gallagher: all heart, no hands

You would think Bergevin would have woken up after the 2020 playoffs and not offer him a contract. He was absolutely useless during those two playoffs.
He paid him for what he did in the past. That was a big mistake. MB got way too attached to some of the players. Gallagher should've been traded when his value was still somewhat good. He was never that talented to begin with. Now that his body caught up, he's an expensive 3rd liner.

Respectfully, your anger is probably misplaced. Especially if he was once one of your favourite players.

The noise (goals) is that Gallagher is dreadful. The signal (underlying stats and other performance measures) is that Gallagher is very slightly worse than who he always was and has had dreadful puck luck and poor linemate chemistry.
Used to love the guy, but he is bad now, real bad................making way too much noise for a guy who should keep real quiet. He is playing at a 2M players pace.............and is making more than 3 times that...........
Let's call a spade a spade.................
Can he rebound? If he sniffs 15-20 goals my god trade him for anything you can get......but it's not likely to happen...................he has morphed himself into a big pile of ...............and it's sad.
Most predicted it would happen, but wow, this has the 18 wheeler fallen off the cliff scenario to it............

Totally agree. The loyalty of some fans boggles my mind. He'll be lucky to get close to 20 again. Watch him try and skate these days! It's like he's in wet cement. There's no power on his shot and he still just shoots from everywhere at random. Doesn't even try to make a play or think. Yet he still gets PP time. I truly hope they won't be boneheads and give this guy the captaincy.
I'm wondering if Molson learned his lesson after letting 1 guy call the shots. Now there's 2.

Sadly Molson agreed to everyone one of these bad contracts. Having a VP of Hockey Ops would have made sense.
Gallagher sadly is one of those players whose lack of quickness has finally caught up to him, it is what it is. He cannot skate in this new era.
He can go back to his home this summer, train and recharge but it won't matter, his skating is not at a level where he will score 20 goals again.
At Least Petry can still skate flawlessly and he will be able to be moved.

So Gallagher and Price are all that's left from the 2012-13 team. A whole decade gone, and with it all but 2 guys. And the clock seems to be running out on them.

Both have been great for quite some time...........injuries have caught up to Price, who is 4-5 years older than Gally...............as for Gally just played so hard for years, and we all knew this would this would catch up to him, which made the crazy 6 yr deal, even worse.
He might, just might have 1-2 more decent seasons in him, but his salary for his production is beyond awful.

So because he is not what he used to be, people should not be loyal and drop him like a bad shoe and depict him like he's a nobody or worse? No what boggles the mind is the lack of loyalty. Someone that has given so much for us that left it all on the ice every shift. He's been a true Habs and some fans are simply not.

Price for rammed into by Kreider and some posters act like it's Prices fault he's had knee problems ever since. Smh

I think where his production has dipped, and if he was at 3M no one would mind..............not to mention he has become this huge mouth on twitter, making himself look like a donkey....Gally has been a big pain all of a sudden to the organization.
He better have a big offseason to get himself back in the game for October.
Hard not to be disappointed in his recent play and behavior.

Is that you, MB? You think it's a good thing having a 6.5 million dollar, essentially 3rd line player??? That's not feasible. People rip on Anderson yet he scored 19 goals! Gallagher had 7. 7! I've watched this team since the mid 70's. I'm loyal to the Habs, not to an underperforming player. Loyalty is what got them into this cap mess in the first place. Gallagher gave his all in years past, but he was never the most talented player. He no longer fits the mold of what they're trying to build.

Gallagher has never hit even 60 points so let’s slow down on the “given so much” talk. He played hard and sacrificed his body because that is the only way he could remain in the NHL. I’ve previously called him a Premium or Deluxe Grinder. It’s not like he’s in the NHL for his soft hands and vision.

In return he’s been well compensated, hasn’t he?

So when he doesn’t live up to expectations as a performer (it’s been more than one season that he’s under-produced) and his influence or “intangibles” prove to be intangible/irrelevant… should Habs fans keep warm with fuzzy thoughts of his 2013-2015 seasons?

My strongest impression of Gallagher is of someone who has stewarded the most 4+ game losing streaks in Habs history. It’s remarkable how experienced he is at saying things to the media in a losing streak, world class.

Before he signed the contract, he scored at a pace of 29 goals or more more per 82 games, for 4 straight seasons.

He WAS not a play driver. He WAS a goal scorer, plus brought intangibles. IF he could still bring those things, he'd be worth his contract. BUT, I don't think he can - no big summer of fitness will bring the old Gallagher back, unfortunately, I would guess.

But hopefully he focuses more on agility, endurance, and losing weight than on bulking up for in tight battles. That's just less a part of the game now.

His contract sucks, but it was handed to him, so unfair to blame him for it
he got the most from his capabilities for several years by hard work, sacrifice and energy but can't just keep it up anymore, he not bouncing back unfortunately

I realize people don't want to hear it but we have to keep in mind that the schedule the last two years has been very abnormal and there's clearly lingering injuries after a very short offseason last summer. Not that I think he's just going to be magically perfectly healthy next year, but I think it's premature to just conclude his body is 100% done forever after the Habs' offseason amounted to about 8 or 9 weeks last summer. He's declining for sure, but I don't think we have enough information to just conclude he sucks and is going to pace for 10-12 goals a year forever now.

He probably won't get back to his prime again but I think the tapdancing on his grave is very premature. The underlying numbers are fine and it's not as if this guy was an elite sniper in his prime that's lost his shot, with a better start and a full season without Ducharme I think a 2nd line built around him and Dvorak will be perfectly acceptable.

Of course I would be happy if they found a way to trade him in the offseason. As a dumb guy with no knowledge inside the room but I get bad vibes from his "leadership" and I would be glad to turn the page, but I don't think the situation is as dire as it's being painted here.

Why did Geoff Molson go along with Marc Bergeron’s gifting Gally a ridiculous 6-year @ $6.5 M contract extension? Molson will now be saddled with Gally for the next five seasons.

That's not true.

He signed his contract on October 14th, 2020. His 4 previous seasons he had :

22 goals in 59 games (pace of 30.57 goals in 82 games)
33 goals in 82 games
31 goals in 82 games
10 goals in 64 games (pace of 12.81 goals in 82 games)

You include the 2020-2021 season but his contract was already signed. Also the sample size in this season was too small to be relevant since he played only 35 games.

Personally i don't think you should pay a vet player for a production sustained in only 3 seasons (before signing his contract). This is always a very risky and dangerous move unless the guy is a grade a+ prospect coming off his ELC and you want to secure him for many seasons and you are 100% sure he'll develop to his full potential like Suzuki or Tkachuk type of deals. Those are risky too but if you'Re right you gain a lot by signing them.

True.

I wasn't defending the contract. I didn't like it when it was signed because of the risk factor with a player of Gallagher's style about to approach 30 (see Ryan Callaghan for one of many examples).

I was countering the notion that Gallagher was always a nothing player, aside from a few fluke seasons/aberations. He was a great player, at least for the old NHL, in his prime.

I'm not sure Molson truly paid attention to these things. I think Bergevin had free reign. Now, as you said, he's stuck with it (or rather, Hughes and Gorton are.) I'm sure this is one reason he hired 2 people to run things.

Seems like you are trying to reach for things just cause you don't like somebody

Yea he's paid too much. What does that have anything to do with anything. The contract is signed. And he's not tradeable. That's out of his power, that's out of our power. So we're at a stalemate. Pointless to rag on the guy for it. He'll be a third line guy with works hard from now on. People will just have to realise that.

Hard not to be disappointed in his recent play and behavior.

Well two years ago, he got 20 goals in 60 games. And the year before that he got 30 goals. And if we look at his season last year, he got 14 goals in 35 games which means he could have reached 30 goals. Probably could have had 30 goals those three years straight. You know when it dipped? This year! Only this year he had trouble and people are demonizing him. For a guy that left his heart on the ice, it sure didn't take the supposed fans long to get on his case. If it had been say 3 years of suckage, I would understand a little more. Not to mention the guy is banged up. Gervais was talking about this during his press conference. And we all knew this would eventualy happen.

if he had his old caphit nobody would say a bad word about him. His contract is just putrid and he either lives up to it or he gets shit on as a player.
