Sure he was. Didn't he leave because of the board? Pretty sure he did.

Anyways, the problem with the Leafs isn't the lack of a CEO, it's the fact the board acts on all levels of decision making constantly. MLSE is nothing but a bloated organization that can't effectively find it's direction or make consistent decisions. It's essentially run by LarryT who will act through any tier down to GM when he sees fit.

Ideally we would have a GM that is competent and can do most things with as little oversight as possible. Hiring a new CEO would just lead to constant board interference through that CEO (as is now) so no real difference will be made.

IMO if owners are making money with "less" costs doesn't matter if it is MLSE board, teachers pension plan or etc... who will meddle in too much.

First and foremost its a business before its a sport anyway. Rogers and Bell's involvement with MLSE seems like a "hedge" move incase they are forced into providing services to canadians at a decent rate (ex: in Canada we pay ridiculous amount of money for cell phone plans and internet compared to other G20 countries as a share of our after tax income on average).

Also in terms of Larry T, he is what like 80? eventually someone from his family is gonna replace him or his holding company may decide to sell their stake in MLSE.

MLSE board works like any other business when massive "investments" are made the board needs to have a say. The GM is not spending their own money; the GM is spending MLSE's money. Dubas' entire tenure has been complete garbage not only from hockey pov but also from business pov. he has lost MLSE money by being a really terrible manager. Although, IMO the buck stops with Shanny since he approved a lot of it.

Bottom Line: If Leafs are doing well (sport success and financial success), there is fan engagement and fans are happy there is not going to be any issue regardless of how much the board intervenes. IMO the board only intervenes when there is ridiculous and significant "hockey" investments. Board has to trust the judgment of their GM afterall, and if GM is garbage like dubas the board eventually will intervene more than it did prior. Its no different than any other business.

If MLSE hires a CEO than they should get rid of the President positions for raptors, leafs, etc. Before Leiweke was working on his own without any so called "presidents" then he hired shanny and ujiri. CEO in a sport environment IMO serve no purpose unless its a publicly traded company that owns a sporting franchise(s) too.

He didn’t impress me, at all. He may do a good job but he came across as weak and incompetent.

you may want to listen to the his interview on TSN and Sportsnet where he talked a bit more about how he envisions his team play hockey. He seems to understand how you gotta play hockey especially in the playoffs to give yourself a chance at success.

The best he did was hyman..

I guess we cant be negative about holl and bunting they did give their seasons and were the cheap finds.. but yeah i want better

Hyman refused to sign with the team that drafted him (Florida) because he wanted to play in Toronto only.

Tallon's hands were tied and traded him before losing him to free agency.

Hyman was a good trade for Dubas, but not one that Dubas would have made himself if it wasn't handed to him on a silver platter and told to make it.

Based on his PC Treliving doesn’t seem very confident. Why did he have to go on about Calgary?

My first impression is he’s not going to get the job done.
Paying respect to the place you were previously doesn't reflect that you aren't excited or ready for the place you are now. You don't have to hate every ex-girlfriend, sometimes its just not working anymore and time to move on to the next chapter in your life.

His be!ief in getting aggressive, forecheck minded players and front net presence is in line with how I view NHL hockey, wth a fortress on D.

The problem will arise if he believes the core can get this done. To get the players he needs,.as everyone has known, the money has to come from up top.

I didn't see his presser but that wouldn't be a good look at all.

I imagine he took less money and doesn't have a five year contract in Pittsbirgh as he was apparently offered by Shanny. So, imagine how he must feel if he left $5-10M dollar (Im just spit balling) on the table by overplaying his hand (if that is what happened)?

Also, he has to now uproot his family to Pittsburgh. Is that going to be better on the family front than staying in Canada? The stress in T.O was already an issue for him

i wisj him al! the best. He at least tworked hard, moved the needle often and he had a stellar trade deadline. The Core faiiled him and us yet agan. If it isnt fixed I wont pay attention next regular season.

Brad Treliving philosophy on how to build a winning team aligns with mine and legendary coach cotty Bowman ..

"Good teams are built from the goalie out, through strong defense and strength down the middle" .. because "Defense wins championships"

I'm expecting a real focus on building a big mean and mobile defense core where 5-8 Victor Mete need not apply.

We've had virtually no O from the D and lack guys who can punish you. Our 3rd and 4th lines were better this year but have also failed to produce or provide an identity. I hope one core piece is moved to.balance things out there but wondering if Trev will want to roll with them with a re-tooled D and some snarl in the bottom 6

Could this be why Lamoriello moved on?

If he was being constrained by the hierarchy in Toronto I'm not sure that is something with his pedigree would put up with for long.

Perhaps they didn't extend him because he didn't want to operate under that and might have made waves or was pushing back on the roadblocks.

Who would know more about NHL hockey than the board? :sarcasm:

While Treliving was in Calgary, I didn't pay too much attention to, nor care for that matter as it didn't impact the Leafs,

However I must say after hearing his Leafs press conference, and then watching him make the rounds on Overdrive with Hayes, Noodles & O-dog and then join That's Hockey Tonight with Geno Reda as a guest, I have come across impressed.

He is very well spoken, comes across as very knowledgeable and well liked and connected around the league, and very forthcoming on his answers appearing truthful as best he can and never painting himself into a corner while leaving all option on the table doing forward.

Hearing his philosophy of building from the net out with a focus of strong defense is music to my ears.. Even when praising the core 4 he loved the high-end skill but their willingness and ability to focus on responsibilities away from the puck defensively is what he stressed on as perhaps determining their long-term fate, because he demands hard work and not just skill to play on his teams.

How he plans on reshaping the Leafs into his vision and image for success will be interesting to watch unfold.

An exciting change has come to Toronto, and with that new hope for more future success :crossfing can turn a realist like myself to have some optimism again.

Sooooo, how did his Flames do this year?

Perhaps he's now a more experienced GM and will have success in Toronto.

Kind of seems like a lateral move, but one that Dubas forced on them. Dubas just accepts the contract offered, he's still in charge.

Leafs are now a veteran team, with 3 players getting paid elite level money.

Holl at $2M was a bargain. When he and Muzzin were together they were one of thr best shutdown pairings in the league. He plays tough minutes, not glory minutes in the offensive zone,. Effectively killed penalties against star players, his value to the Leafs exceeded his pay among a cap strapped team of "Sunsine List" stars.

Here is the REAL litmus test as to his worth. Watch what he is given on the open market. You want to bet he gets a nice raise?

Now name for me the current Leaf D Man who is going to replace his heavy minutes and penalty killing alone. All for $2M,. 20% of Marners salary.

He isn't Lindstrom or Bobby Orr, but for his salary, he was a steal. Don't blame him for the fact that Leafs don't have a true #1 who can eat 22+ mnutes on both ends of the ice.

All Leaf fans see is some of the decisions he makes in corners under pressure where without support (that Muzzin was good at) he floundered at times.

They don't remember his posiitoning in front or simple play to get it out rather than coughing up the puck.

This isn't specific to you but I often wonder if todays hockey fans watch other teams. He will be in demand this offseason I guarantee it. Ask yourself "why"?
Muzzin was good enough to drag Holl around and make the pairing look playable. As the hard miles that Muzzin put on in previous years (with the Kings) and injuries took their toll, Muzzin was no longer and that same level and Holl was completely exposed as a liability in all areas on the ice. Since Muzzin, Holl has never found a D partner that he couldn't make look worse then when being anchored to him.

Luke Schenn who a lot of people complained about and said he is a 6/7/8 dman at best signed the following contracts the past 7 seasons:

2016-2018 = 2 year deal @ $2.5M ($1.25M per year)
2018-2019 = 1 year deal @ $800k
2019-2020 = 1 year deal @ $700k
2020-2021 = 1 year deal @ $800k
2021-2023 = 2 year deal @ $1.7M ($850k per year)

Luke Schenn has been a far better player being used in the same role as Justin Holl. Schenn gets traded here and far surpasses everyone's expectations and settles in to playing with Mo on the top pair.

Schenn's lack of offence is off-set with a physical Dman who punishes players and makes them pay the price around the net while not prone to making bad reads in the neutral zone and being caught out of position. The only thing that Schenn and Holl are similar in are the neither produce offence.

If a team that is trying to be competitive gives Holl a contract worth more than what the typical 7/8 dmen sign for they will regret it.

It's why Scotty Bowman ddnt coach and GM this team. Leafs are designed to lose. The country Club atmosphere trickles down to the players.

“Those Who Do Not Learn History Are Doomed To Repeat It.”

Last year was a very trying time in Calgary mostly because of roster turmoil and transition with both Johnny Hockey and Matt Tkachuk moving on.

The learning experience with Gaudreau was allowing a player to enter his final year unsigned and risk the potential of loss to the organization as a result. Treliving inherits this very problem with numerous of Leafs high-end players, complicated further by NMC that ties a GMs hands.

With Tkachuk a RFA that refused to re-sign regardless of money based in part of what happened above with JG leaving for Columbus. Now Treliving had to make the best out of forced situation of a player that wanted out and limited where he wanted to go. Somebody Treliving didn't want to trade but had no choice in the end.

However getting 4 pieces in a big trade, shows BT has the willingness and ability to make that type of franchise defining trade and even though in any quality for quantity deal often the winner is the one that gets the best player in the deal, he still did get a pretty good haul. Ironically many Leafs fans believed Treliving came out on top and it was Florida that got scalped in the deal and would fall back at time of deal, only hindsight and team results suggesting the opposite was true. But many saw it as GOOD trade for Flames and good move for BT.

Calgary the team struggled under the new and missing core players in transition, but how much take away experience will BT take from this as he faces potential similar situations in Toronto in the course of the next couple years will be interesting to see unfold.

Didnt know the detail about him only wanting toronto

Scratch that off the old dubie list then.. so he is left with bunting and holl?

Nice

Agreed. The last few weeks have been a revelation regarding the true character of Dubas.

It was also interesting to see his unusual demeanor at the Pittsburgh press conference. He was like a deer in the headlights. Quite a contrast to the arrogance that we became accustomed to in Toronto.

As far as I'm concerned, Auston Matthews' benchmark contract should be David Pastrnak's deal ($11.25M aav) including term. I love the abilities of Auston Matthews and all that but Pastrnak is now the better player of the two, less fragile, a bit harder, better production in the playoffs, higher level defensive awareness. You pay a bit of a premium to keep a player in a Canadian city so the premium is matching Pastrnak's deal. This $15M aav for 3 years is insanity. I guess if it were between losing the player for nothing and paying an unearned premium for 3 more years you reluctantly do it but never with a NMC.
You realize Matthews is a Center right ?
