Pierre LeBrun on the most important steps for Treliving, whether the Matthews deal with be "smooth sailing & whether the Penguins roster holds up - TSN.ca

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun joined the OverDrive crew earlier today and got into a number of things including the most important steps for Brad Treliving, whether the Auston Matthews deal will come together smoothly and why he isn't a huge fan of the Penguins situation for Kyle Dubas.
What concerns me is that Treliving had to ask his wife for permission and that the job in Calgary was stressful. He is already making excuses.

I have heard that Treliving is now claiming the contract is invalid and threatening to pull out of the presser at the 11th hour, due to family stress. After being unavailable to calls and texts all day, his agent has just sent Shanny an updated draft with a new financial package that includes an extra 2M annual raise.

Damn.

Just saw a Dubas fanboy knock out a Treliving fanboy at the pub. It all started nice and calm but after a few drinks the Dubas fanboy snapped when Team Treliving called him an analytical nerd!

One punch KO!

Then he stood over top of him screaming:

""WHO'S THE NERD NOW??!?!"

I hope this doesn't foreshadow what happens to the Leafs.

I don’t think trev wants to be the Leafs GM that shows up and trades Matthews less than a few months on the job

Likewise I don’t think he wants to be the Leafs GM that comes in and lets a Matthews contract negotiation trade out more than a month or two in a key offseason

Johnston details how Leafs' deal with Treliving came together - TSN.ca

TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston joins SportsCentre to explain how the Maple Leafs' deal with new GM Brad Treliving came together, share some details about the contract, and discuss what the hire means for the looming decisions regarding Sheldon Keefe and Toronto's core 4.
CJ and other media got contacted by MSLE and Treliving and were assured their incomes are safe and access will be forthcoming. It'll be all positive spin for a while.

All is right with their world.

So what did Treliving learn from the pressures of star players in contract dilemmas a year ago that he can now apply to dealing with the futures of Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander? This is where Shanahan and Leafs business gets confusing.

According to reports, Shanahan already told the Core Four players — the $40-million worth of forwards — that he wants to go forward with all of them. He apparently wants to go forward with Sheldon Keefe coaching.

He wants Treliving to run the hockey team — but whose vision will be employed? That of team president? Or that of the new general manager?

All you have to do is turn your television set on to watch the Vegas Golden Knights and Florida Panthers play to see what the Maple Leafs are lacking. To see how the roster is unsuited for playoff success. To see how the teams toughest on the boards, best on the cycle, with bodies in front of both goals and sharp goaltending leads to success in the post-season.

What does Treliving do first? Confirm his coach? Meet with Matthews’ people. Talk trade around the league on Marner or Nylander or neither of them? Build his organization from the inside the way he wants it.

Dubas was a master of excess. His scouting meetings were so large they looked like wedding receptions. His front office was the most populated in professional hockey.

Treliving comes from a much more humble place.

He’s not afraid to roll up his sleeves, though, and be bold.
The Tkachuk trade was bold and, at the time, some believed he won the deal. The Markstrom signing was bold and necessary. The acquisition of Elias Lindholm primarily in a deal for Dougie Hamilton and a throw-in named Adam Fox was certainly bold.

Treliving has some Cliff Fletcher in him. He’s unflappable winning trades or losing trades — the way Fletcher was bringing in Doug Gilmour and Mats Sundin to Toronto after dealing away Brett Hull and winning the only Stanley Cup in Calgary.

Dubas’ boldest move as GM was the signing of John Tavares, which was undermined by the pandemic, a salary cap that rarely moved and time.

Now the puck is handed to Treliving. A GM should set the agenda. He should establish the tempo around the team. He does more than trade players, more than oversee the draft, more than work through the salary cap. This is what the best of GMs do.

The most proficient president-GM combo in Toronto sporting history came from Paul Beeston and Pat Gillick. Implicitly, they understood what their jobs were and how sometimes one had to step over the other to get the work done in the best way possible.

They were like a dance team, almost always in step, only occasionally stumbling. What kind of team will Shanahan and Treliving be? What kind of team on the ice will they want?

Will they have any of the Beeston-Gillick magic in them?
Or is this just a case of more Maple Leafs shuffling, with different people doing the same old things?
