What? He was the head coach for multiple years... what are you talking about?

He prepped his team one year it appeared.
He won a Cup, and won a round or two after and but he lost his #1 D man.

He’s not an upper echelon coach by any means but he he gets some stuff out of his players for a little while and no one should expect a miracle out this group.

Alot of our stars didnt come up big in the playoffs. It wasnt just Marner.

"when games get tough" is just another term that the rules change to benefit the goons.

They are tougher because defenceman especally bigger and slower ones in the playoffs are allowed to step up and interfere to slow down the opposing player with skill. Crosschecks are also let go as refs turn a blind eye to that. Dont even mention the skimmishes in front of the net during the playoffs. But the Don Cherry fans love that kind of hockey or goonery.

Just make the rules all the same all year long. No other sport does this. Its not like players got bigger balls in the playoffs , its because they know they can get away with more in the playoffs because the rules change. The grind of playoff hockey is hard as you play alot of games in a short period of time I will agree to that.
The defence the face may be bigger and stronger but most are not slower than the Leafs’ forwards.

He won a cup with a team that everyone seems to think is better than our current team.

He won a round after, nothing more.

The majority of his coaching career was bad by our board's standards, he has a single good year (was the best you can hope for).

His winning % is very similar to Keefe's (this includes the one outlier year).

I hope he can do something good, I really do, I just see that 7/8 years he coached, he had poor results, and I don't like the odds.

Change is fine, and it isn't like he is a bad coach, I just think the blind optimism is funny, this is the same team with someone who yells a little louder, maybe that is what does it.

The Blues had a great team with size, skill, some speed, and leadership. His resume doesn’t suggest he can win big when he has a roster like the Leafs.

That doesn’t mean they can’t make the playoffs and win a round.

I would suggest to you that he has more talent here then he did when he won with the Blues.

At no point did the Blues have a Forward as good as Matthews is, pr a winger as good as Marner or Nylander.

he did have ROR as a 1C but even Tavares today is probably better than what he had as a 2C when he won with the Blues.

Is there a big skill gap between Woll and Binnington?

I'm not convinced there is, although Woll certainly needs to stay healthy.

What he did have that he doesn't have here is AP, but overall he's got more talent to work with here.

Potential talent gap, potential skill gap, the problem is they have yet to show it on the ice.

I’m curious to see how Berube overcomes the lack of speed in this lineup.

Hopefully he runs lines that fit stylistically instead of making 3 lines that are kind of ok at everything. I’d rather Pacioretty-Tavares-Marner playing a slow heavy game and a fast Nylander line come on right after than two lines that are neither particularly fast or heavy back to back.

That cup winning team he coached is not better than the current Leafs team. They won because of a super hot Binnington. Remember that was a last place team when he took over. After the Stanley cup the team turned back into what it was. A bubble playoff team.

Keefe changed the way he coached after the loss to Montreal in the 1st round. After that he coached not to lose instead of coaching to win. Not sure Berube is going to change much other than he will be more aggressive offensively and will over play the hot players.

I want him to over play his players especially his stars.

I want Matthews getting 23-25 minutes a night, he should be he's the guy.

The year following their Cup win, St Louis was playing well and were in a great position to repeat, until they shut down the league.

Well said!
You can yell as loud as you want, but if the players choose not to listen, nothing changes. As it stands I think the odds of them listening is 50/50, and as the season goes along and if the team struggles I think those odds swing in favour of tuning the new guy out, which would be a predictable shame……….

Treliving's report card so far.

Trades: FAIL - All those picks wasted on deadline rentals that didn't work out was expensive and stupid. The biggest failing here though is not being able to trade one of either Marner or Nylander.

Free agency: FAIL - Everyone he signed is over the hill and injury prone. Just constant bad targets and bad contracts. Will probably cost even more draft picks to unload a couple these in a few years.

Contracts: FAIL - All Treliving has done since he got here is give people raises. He must be an agent's favourite GM. Because he just gives players everything they ask for.

Drafting: N/A - Too early to say either way.

Even if the direction was coming from Shanahan the execution has been terrible. The responsibility for the final on ice product rests entirely with Treliving's office. It's his job to put together a cup contending hockey team.

He FAILED...

I wouldn’t claim all of these things conclusively just yet but I believe this is the direction it’s headed

maybe tanev can reignite rielly (common denominator curse of the leafs with marner) and have a synergism not seen before?

Rielly has been our best or second best players in the majority of playoff series, I am not really concerned with him.

I don't think Tanev will make Rielly better than he was with Schenn, and I have my doubts he will even make him better than he was with Lub last year.

Not a knock against Tanev, just the Schenn-Rielly pairing was one of the best in the playoffs that year, and Lub was great with Rielly too.

On paper, obviously Tanev is the best of the bunch, just the result will be hard to beat.

Fun fact, Marner won every award possible plus the Memorial Cup in his last year of junior. Only OHL player ever to accomplish that. #winner

I'll support giving him 15M/yr if he adds a Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe to the collection.

people think than tanev will make rielly better in the defensive sidr but for me where that will make an impact is on the offensive side.

The fact Tanev is the best D will allow rielly to take more risk in the offensive end and get involve much more offensively without being scare of what his partner will do... Come back closer of 2018-2019 rielly with hainsey. it's where the biggest difference will be

Signing Marner would be the best option.

Treliving isnt a dinosaur GM like people make him out to be. I have zero doubts the only options are sign Marner, or fleece another team using Marner in a trade.

In no universe is a player in Marners caliber seen as cap relief.

The wings might have 27 mil in Seider, Raymond and Larkin and still wont make the playoffs. Our 3 amigos are what, going to be 40 mil combined if you round up and guarantee playoffs even on their bad days. You get what you pay for.

Superstars get paid especially if its a Canadian market. Its a blessing and a curse we have these guys. But only a curse because the league is setup in a way to make people prefer Japanese Car Soccer over hockey.

Edit: Oh all the wings guys signed now. Close enough

I agree with this. I also think benefit of waiting a bit to sign Marner is to see if Rantanen signs in Colorado. He has to be a ceiling that Marner's next deal should fall under, no?

I hate this narrative and feel the need to speak up.

Going into 18-19, they were not expected to be a bad team. Most people listed them right around the top 4-6 area, with the composition being a bit of an unknown due to so much roster turnover. They performed poorly because Mike Yeo did not know how to utilize the players he had. Their defensive scheme shifted from zone to man-to-man, which caused them to struggle mightily. Jake Allen also could never make the jump to full time and had a penchant for choking.

They also were never in last place by points percentage. They had multiple games in hand.

Binnington was a key component, but he was not the sole reason they won. He was lights out in the regular season. In the playoffs, Binnington was outplayed by Ben Bishop and Pekka Rinne. He played about even with Hellebuyck, and he outplayed Martin Jones. His save percentage was .914. He was good, but he had awful games and poor outings. You are not giving the Blues team the credit it deserves. They overcome much adversity, including an objectively blown call with the Sharks' hand-pass in overtime. That put them down in the series.

I credit Berube almost entirely for overcoming that hand-pass. Many of the Blues players were livid. Schenn broke his stick on the glass screaming at the refs. It would be worth your time to watch Berube's post-game comments to the press. He was calm. He didn't complain about the missed call. He said they were moving on, not one ounce of entitlement.

The other thing I strongly remember from that series was the camera shot of the San Jose bench a couple of games later. There were large visible gaps due to all of the Sharks' players in the locker room or out injured. The Blues pummeled the hell out of them with legal hits and aggressive play. They never let up.

I would say the Leafs current roster has a better top 6 for sure, at least in totality. It's hard to not recognize that O'Reilly won the Con Smythe though. I'd rather have someone who puts in that level of performance over someone with more skill on paper.

I would say in every other category but the top 6, the Blues team was likely better. Their third and fourth lines were excellent. Very underrated. Steen may have been one of the best 4th liners on any team in the playoffs at the time.

I would say the Blues defense was better. Everyone knows Petro, but many would say Bouwmeester was the Blues best defenseman during the playoffs. He brought out Parayko's best play, and they were our best pairing that shut teams down.

I'd also say Binnington, at that specific moment, was a better goalie than Woll likely is right now. That's hard to say though as Woll is a good goalie and could continue to play very well. I would not be surprised if Woll ends up with better career stats.

I think this is a solid Leafs team. I think it certainly is good enough to win the cup. You need some luck no matter how good you are. I think Berube could bring out the best in some of your players and I'm eager to see how the team performs under him. He's a solid coach.

Binnington had a combined SV% of .939 in the six elimination though, so he was clutch when they needed him to be.

With the exception of Woll, our goaltending in elimination games has been sub .900 for the last decade by comparison.
