Marner's camp has to agree to it.

That's what everyone keeps forgetting.
If Utah offers the extension at 13mil or higher while Leafs said 11.5mil. Think MM will agree.
Whichever team trading for MM will agree to an extension before a trade is done.

"Evaluation" period honeymoon is over. Tre's on the clock, time to start making some tough decisions.

He won't help the Leafs.

Why would he?

He's never done us any favors so far, why would him and his camp start now?

He can just delete his Twitter and Instagram and play out the season, no?

Ofcourse he can and Leafs will probably benefit since he will play all out in the regular season but I think Tre and MGT will not sign him till after the playoffs. MM next contract with the Leafs will be based on his next playoffs.
Don’t think MM will do that even if he delete all his social medias. He just doesn’t have the mental fortitude like Willie.
But by that’s just my opinion.

Poor Tre. With scraps he built the best playoff team we have had, solid defense and forward adds that remarkably transformed this teams culture and play style in the right direction.

Only to be done in by what was left from Dubie in Keefe and Sammy. And next year he's working with JT and no first.

Dark days from the egregious ineptitude are not behind us just yet.
he got one of the biggest jobs in hockey without an interview, poor guy

And we had a very great defensive effort once again
Except it wasn't a great defensive effort. We allowed quite a bit and got hemmed in a ton.
And we once again sucked in transition because we focused too much on defensemen that bring physicality over other valuable attributes.
And then we lost.
It's a proven-losing model.
There's nothing wrong with the model. Treliving just made the wrong choices.

Someone make a .gif of Liljegren failing to pin JVR on the boards and then falling down like a weakling and email it to Tre once a day so he remembers what to do first.

JVR didn't even do any puck protection he literally just kept weakly skating and looked soft himself, but Lil still somehow found it challenging to stay on his feet.

I still contend he had a good first year here, given the "hit the ground running" circumstances when he took over, I mostly liked what he did.

Benoit: cheap home run, great contract

McMann: great contract

Gregor: decent no cost depth add

Domi: great add

Bertuzzi: good add, we need some spice in the top six he provided that presence.

Reaves: had a great second half. We could trade that cap hit in a heartbeat now, right idea add and he lived up to his number in the end.

Klingberg: for all the criticism a one year deal flyer, right idea, he was hurt from the get go so we will never know there. Perhaps a fail in not using the cap space at the deadline.

That deadline: didn't mortgage the future for immediate gain, given our empty cupboard and looming cap crunch, I actually liked how he approached the deadline, nice adds, within our limitations.

Boosh: great add, he was really rock solid and just neutralized people alll over the ice this playoffs. I look to keep him around.

Edmundson: exactly as advertised, solid depth D add

Dewar: ditto

Jones: man that little move was crucial mid season, smart add

Now he has a full off season to access the coach and players, but I'm quite content with him as GM, his first year body of work was good overall, not sure how anyone other than a lame Dubie lover could argue otherwise, but this place never disappoints.

Big decisions ahead.

Despite the loss, I'm very encouraged with the direction our new GM is taking this team..

When you exit the playoffs as the most physical team leading it in hits, then you went down fighting, not out like a whimper like past seasons.

BT was handed a bad hand, but made the most of it with the limited cap space he had after the core 4 consuming over 1/2 of it,

I was proud of this years playoff version of the Leafs, something I haven't been able to say in the past 5 years, with a team leaving in embarrassing fashion, losing many series they should have won.

I mean, last night was pretty embarrassing. And we were put in a position where it wasn't a series "we should have won", to begin with.

The morning after, I'm just frustrated.
Top scoring team year-after-year, and then year-after-year we score 1 goal a game. We will never win that way.
Offense absolutely dries up, we get shut down and boxed out.

Out coached pretty much every game.

Doesn't matter if we try to finesse or playing a bruising game. It's the same result.

Boston was the better team going into this, and Boston played better overall.
But holy shit, this team is also one of the unluckiest sports teams, period. Nothing ever goes our way.
It's infuriating.
Last night's game literally could've gone any way in OT. But nope. Here we are again...

BT has some work to do.

I think tre did a decent job considering the circumstances he walked into. Despite what a few here think he has made the right changes to helping them become a better playoff team.

BT has some work to do.
I had my realistic expectations set at Boston in 6 going in, so to lose in game #7 OT after being down 3-1 in the series was an over-expectation end result for me.

Losing to Columbus in the 24 team play-in round and Montreal while up 3-1 in the series with games played at ACC, or nearly getting swept by Florida last year those were all painful endings for me.

See I believe in "Defense wins Championship" motto so I never put much faith in a high scoring team in the regular season that plays "Run & Gun", scoring off the rush, with last goal wins mentality to play playoff style "Dump and Chase" tight checking hard hitting low scoring games.

I think its poor coaching to play Run and Gun fill the net, and then switch to Dump and Chase come playoff time.. You can't simply flip a switch.. But with the player personnel moving in the right direction I would like to see the plan of more playoff style hockey played during the regular season beginning next year & I wouldn't mind a new coach also so we don't outcoached every season.,

He's probably going to end up a lame duck GM with Shanny gone. Its kind of sad, because I like what he's doing (its not perfect) and I think I share his philosophy on a team.

Outside Klingberg, I liked every player he acquired, even Reeves brought some value.

I agree. We lost the game but we didn’t choke it away. I like the stronger D that stops the cycle and a team that plays physical. Obviously there are changes coming but I’m comfortable with Trelivings direction.

It was a uneventful first year.

He didnt draft Cowan......Leafs already had him on their radar.

He still paid Mathews and Nylander.....just like Dubas.

He sent away assets for rentals....just like Dubas.

He forced two assistants on Keefer? how did that pan out? PK was bad.

His grit guys didnt come thru during the playoffs ....sure the team showed some heart with
Nylander and Mathews missing. Nylander came back and scored and there wasnt anyone else that came thru the last two games.

We have some young kids that may step up even more next year which is exciting.

Gio, the russian bear....even Edmundson...can all walk away....we need to set the bar higher then those guys. Black hole offensively......getting big guys to bounce the puck off the boards to create offence is dime a dozen.

Reilly plays like he is 180lbs instead of over 220lbs....

It was good of Tre not to extend Sammy.......We all better hope Woll injury isnt something that will linger throughout his carreer. When he is healthy....he seems like a Number 1 goalie

Lets see how Tre deals with this 1st rd exit. Will he overpay fringe players? How will he deal with Marner? Bert and Domi? Players usually go where the money is and rightfully so.

Top priorities before July 1st:

Fire Keefe
Hire a new coach
Try to sign Domi, Bertuzzi, Edmundson and Lyubushkin to reasonable contract extensions
Approach Mitch Marner regarding waiving his NTC

Agreed.

Next year's team could be fun to watch with Knies, Robertson, and possibly Minten and Cowan providing valuable depth while on their ELCs.

He's got a lot of work to do this off-season.
Dump Samsonov,Brodie and Bert at the airport go sign Pesche/Tanev and get a proven goalie.

I doubt they rush Minten like that with Kampf making $2.4 m on the 4th line but Cowan is very possible to prepare to replace Marner.

How is this the best playoff team the Leafs have had? The Leafs won in the first round last season.

Treliving inherited a 111-point team that made it to the second round, and turned it into a 105-point team that lost in the first round.

That's progress?

We've lost 8 of the last 9, its all in the same territory. Last year we were badly outclassed by Tampa but the hockey gods stepped in - apparently six straight is the limit, it was our gimme series.

This was the first team that had the physicality, mentality, and defensive structure to reliably compete in the playoffs. Replace Keefe and Sammy and we're contenders, probably 2nd or 3rd round this year after a relatively easy 1st, even with all our stars injured and sick, which happens.

Tracking well to salvage whats left of the potential of this team post JT.

Wasn't allowed to draft Cowan - why is that held against him?

He signed our two best players - overpaid, yes, but that's mainly on Dubas.

He sent assets for rentals, but much less assets for better rentals.

But I agree - he didn't do much, mainly because he didn't have a lot of time. The big thing is this summer and next - how will he deal with Marner and JT, and what can he do to improve the team.

Still undecided on Treliving, he did make some good moves, but also made some bad ones IMO.

The Contracts he handed out to Matthews, Nylander, Reaves, and Kampf also bug me, but it's only one year. I think this off season and next are much more important, we'll see if Tre gets the chance.
