Brad Treliving is doing a great job.

Leafs have no real assets

Dubas went for it and killed the teams futures

Treliving is also trying to protect himself and avoiding a big move tjat back fires. He wants to be here if we get humilated in the playoffs

Live shot of Tre:

This team has never been close to a cup contender with the d core they have, it was just a waste of assets. This was Dubas and you can see in a few short months what a mess Pitt is. Who in their right mind makes that trade for Karlson and that contract at this stage of his career when you already have that similar player on your team. He does'nt understand team building. I like what Tre has done, it's taken a while for guys to mesh but they are starting play better. On the defence he doesn't have anything to trade with. Better to wait for the summer to see who they can get as a FA.

Kyle Dubas is definitely the worst GM in Leafs history and one of the worst in the history of the NHL.

Dubas constantly tries to apply the logic of fantasy hockey and NHL’24 video games to building an NHL team. He’s making the exact same mistakes in Pittsburgh with Karlsson as he did in Toronto with Tavares.

Once the Leafs can start moving out the deadwood that Dubas accumulated, they can begin building a competent team around Matthews, Marner and Nylander.

Brodie and his $5M boat anchor will be gone this summer.
Tavares and his $11M boat anchor will be gone next summer.

Thanks to Dubas the Leafs have ZERO picks in 2025 until the 5th round. Treliving isn’t as stupid as Dubas to trade away all of his top draft picks three or four years into the future.

Again, that's likely why Treliving is here, he agrees with the plan.

It seems relatively obvious that the plan is to piece it together for two years (though I think they truly believe we can win in either this year or next) and get relief when the Tavares deal expires.
If they keep spending like a drunken sailor JT's 11 mil coming off the books will be meaningless.......

Going to reserve judgment for a bit. He came into a weird situation where Shanny is the puppet master and was salty over a bad breakup with Dubas, who also left this franchise in a bad spot as far as the cap, prospects and draft capital go. Then Shanny doubled down and seems to have forced the Leafs to hang onto the core, so really Tre can't do much until JT is finally off the books in 2025. Hopefully he can make some suave trades, but reality is he might just be better off doing minimal moves and building the cupboards up again for a bit.
most players worth trading can't be traded, they flushed a great opportunity down the drain, enjoy the next four or five regular seasons cause this team as it stands ain't winning shit..........

How ironic, 7 years later we are back to where Lou left us.

I mean, the guy this thread is about signed Nylander for eight more years with a NMC and re-upped Matthews. I'm not saying those weren't the right moves (Matthews was 150% the right move), it just seems that he likes this core idea (and that's probably why he's here).
He came here having to sign our two best players as soon a possible, and did. Nether deal is perfect - longer term for Matty and lower aav for Willy would have been preferable - but neither is bad. He dealt with the immediate issues, and has another year to figure out what to do about JT and Mitch.

There's not much he can do, maybe nibble around the edges. For all the bad years we have there isn't much left in the cupboard and trading away Cowan and/or Minten will just speed up the drive to mediocrity. The person to blame here is Shanny, one for hiring Dubas and two for keeping him as long as he did. This team will be forced to trade one of the four not named Tavares, to maybe round out the team. You look at the last few years and the assets that left for the sake of a trade is mind boggling. Better to wait for the summer to see who they can get as a FA. I'm afraid this team is closer to a non-playoff contender than cup contender and it will happen sooner than later. Shanahan should be fired now, it was his decision to run with Dubas the first time.
Which of the "four not named Tavares" do you think he can trade? Rielly has a full NMC for the next four years, Matty has a full NMC for the next five years, Willy has a full NMC for the next eight years, and both Mitch and JT have full NMC's for next year, at which point they become UFAs.

Beyond that little hitch, I agree with your post.

This clown is doing shit. All the other big teams like Edmonton, Florida, Colorado etc are making significant deals to improve their team. Tre is doing shit. Sick of pathetic GM's doing nothing to improve. Our window for winning is closing. Our big players are in their prime right now. We need at least 2 big names on D to compete. Move what ever you have to, to get players to help us over the hump. If Tre does nothing, I will be switching teams. I have been a leaf fan for 60 years and sick of the mediocrity. And people talking about bringing in habs ex garbage. Pathetic.

NMCs are out of control

Assuming all we need are "at least 2 big names on D", please tell us who they are.

Making sure, of course, that they don't have NTCs, are on teams that are willing to trade them, have contracts that will fit under our available cap ($144,166), and are available for the negligible tradeable assets we have (not Cowan or Minten or a first).

It is on the players for not getting it done. Every year the GM rewarded them by buying, every year their core folded when they needed them most.

The team Dubas put together at the deadline last year was the best playoff ready team this group could have asked for considering how much their salaries make it impossible to find flexibility. They won't ice a better playoff ready team than last year with the current cap structure.

As such, Brad needs to get big and mean around the edges. Period.

Honestly, Dubas built a good enough team by the end of his tenure, the team just can't stop tripping over themselves. I'm not saying Dubas didn't make mistakes, he certainly did. But once the Ceci/Barrie teams were done with, there were good enough players and the team was good enough to make runs.

Needing 1 goal 3 times in 2021
Being up 3-2 in Game 6 in the 3rd in 2022
Scoring 2 goals for 7 straight games or whatever it was in 2023 (please don't tell me the team didn't have enough offence at their disposal)

This is as much as and more of these players tripping over their own shoelaces than anything else.

And I haven't even gotten to Shanahan yet. I'm wondering how Treliving is feeling 8 months in under that guy.

It's easy to feel left out when you're not at the party. This year, the deadline crap is mostly garbage, but since the demand to improve is always there, it drives prices so you are paying for crap but they look great cause there is no one better to acquire.

It seems for many, Dubas did too much and left the cupboards bare trying, but for others, now not enough is happening. Kind of tough to do both. Can't make a deal cause you don't have a 2nd cause you traded a 2nd doing what many wanted them to do last year aka upgrading. Kinda chicken and egg.

You also never know what tomorrow brings and it's risky, but my guess is Treliving wants to gamble on this team in 2 years when Tavares is off the books, Knies, Cowan, Minten etc... have developed and Matthews and Nylander are still under contract and under 30.

We tried to warn you that Dubas left f*** all of value. As he knew he was heading off to Pittsburgh, he wanted to sabotage the next guy.

How juvenile must you be to call him dumbass repeatedly. You posted utter tripe. 'Don't try and better the team' yeah that should do the trick!

Why is it "considering how much their salaries make it impossible" rather than "considering how much he overpaid them makes it impossible"?

You may be right that they "won't ice a better playoff ready team than last year with the current cap structure", but who's fault is "the current cap structure"?

Is it on the players or the GM?
