The reason is that if he can't complete the contract the cap recapture is horrible. It has to be a now-or-never buyout with him.

I doubt anyone we can grab in free agency will be much better in the next season or two, but what about after that? It's all well and good to say that he has a better PPG than Stastny over the last 5 seasons, but that's skewed by his PPG seasons in Dallas, the fact is that his numbers are trending downwards while Stastny seem pretty stable.

I'm a BR fan, I'm glad we signed him and liked the contract (the caphit, not the $$). It's sad that the new CBA has basically meant he can't finish his career in NY but to ensure we can be competitive in the mid to long term he needs to go

I think Richards will be bought out, not because of production, but because even with a rising cap (71.1-71.5) we'll have too many spots on the roster that needs to be filled with UFA/RFA-players. If Sather manages with resigning both Stralman and Girardi we don't have much room left.

If kept, Zuccarello would get 2.5-3.5M, Kreider at least 2.0M, Callahan would be looking at north of 5.25M, Girardi 5.75M+.

Didnt read this whole thing so I dont know if its been said before, but I wouldnt be opposed to using the compliance buy out on Richards current contract and then (if the price is reasonable) bringing him back.

I just cant really figure a team throwing over 6 mil/yr at a declining center who will be 34 at the start of next year. If a team does, then sure take him, but if they can bring him back for a cap hit around 5 then I think that would be a pretty solid move.

What you suggest is not allowed under the CBA. Either the Rangers cut ties with Richards or they keep him under his current contract.

Yeha, unfortunately, this is the case...

Section 50.9(i), paragraph ii

Compliance Buy-Outs. During the "Ordinary Course Buy-Out" periods
following the 2012-13 NHL Season and 2013-14 NHL Season, in addition
to any other Ordinary Course Buy-Outs a Club may want to effectuate
pursuant to Paragraph 13 of the SPC, each Club may elect to terminate and
"buy-out" the SPC of up to two (2) additional Players (in the aggregate
over the two (2) years) on a Compliance basis (a "Compliance Buy-Out")
(i.e., each Club shall be entitled to a total of two Compliance Buy-Outs that may be exercised in one year or over two years). Such Compliance
Buy-Outs shall be effectuated on the same terms as are set forth in
Paragraph 13 of the SPC, except that (i) there shall be no charge against
the Club's Averaged Club Salary in any League Year on account of a
Compliance Buy-Out and (ii) any amounts paid pursuant to a Compliance
Buy-Out shall be counted against the Players' Share in the League Years
in which they are paid. Further, a Player who has been bought out under
the Compliance Buy-Out provision of this Agreement shall be prohibited
from rejoining the Club that bought him out (via re-signing, Assignment
or otherwise) for the 2013-14 League Year (if that Player was bought out
in 2013) or for the 2014-15 League Year (if that Player was bought out in
2014).

He would be welcome here the year after, but there is a 1 season-period after you are bought out that states you are not allowed to play for the team that bought you out. I wish they never made that provision. Should have allowed GM's and Owners to pay for their own mistakes

First off, I don't want Richards on the roster after this season, no matter the price. Second, why should GM's get a chance to "fix" their mistakes, but only if their owners' have deep pockets?

While Richards was one of my favorite players in Dallas, and I did think he would be much better here, I also think he could have been much worse. Last year was an abomination for sure, but '11-'12 he was an integtal piece to that team, and this year he was showing up when no one else was.

Either way they have to buy him out. He will only continue to decline.

Frankly, I am surprised that there is any consideration to keep him past this year. I thought the buyout this summer was a foregone conclusion because Richards play, while better than last year, clearly shows he is declining and expect his production to continue to decline. Offensively, he is unable to make plays under pressure. He can't cycle or drive the net. If he has time, he either shoots it or passes it to the open man. There is no creativity. Defensively, he is terrible. He just loops around and never picks up a man and cannot body anyone.

I would like to sign Stastny and I expect since he is younger we could get at least 3-4 good years out of him but, that was the expectation out of Richards. At this point though, he needs to be gone because in 2 years I expect him to be a total liability offensively and defensively. Irregardless of signing Stastny or not, Richards must be gone. St Louis arrival did not spark him. He has played with Gaborik and Nash and never averaged a ppg

The Rangers have had Gaborik with Richards. They had some chemistry at the end of 11-12. Richards and Nash never clicked. Richards and Callahan never clicked. MSL didn't click with Richards. The Rangers are running out of players to mesh with Richards. Hagelin plays well with him. That's it.

Richards and Callahan clicked. Take a look at when Cally was playing with Richards, then when he got hurt how Richards game sunk a little, then when he came back after the 2nd injury Richards got hot again, then when Cally got traded he has been cold since. Coincidence ? I don't think so. In fact his last goal was off a Cally pass.

what the hell happened to Richards? he was having an okay season until MSL joined the team. since then he's had like 2 points in 10 games. wtf happened? you'd think MSL joining the team would reignite Richards but it actually has made him even worse.

Who was the clown telling me Richards is as good as datsyuk back when we were debating the rangers signing him?

He's terrible. And his crap old man partner Msl is just as bad.

I'm willing to give MSL some more time.

But Richards is complete garbage, with a capital G.

Probably won't even crack 50 points this year with a Mountain of power play time and is #26 in the league in overall minutes played for a forward.

#2 on the Rangers is Stepan at #44, but at least he cracked 50 points, is young and has promise.

he hasnt been much of an impact player at all this season TBH. a lot of his points have been kinda flukey plays or just a result of him shooting the puck a ton more than usual. Guy hasnt been shooting a lot of late, and its showing.

Frankly he sucks, and Id play Miller over him right now.

But that's just me.

We'll probably blow it all on Stastny who I'm not sure if a better player currently than Richards.

Stastny might not be that better than Richards is right now. But that is irrelevant. If it does in fact come down to an either-or situation, what is important is who the better player is five years from now.

Of course that leaves us kinda trapped because we can't go forward with Stepan at 1C. This is what happens when you can't draft.

Stepan is a 60pt Center, taken with a 51st pick. Thats hitting way above average. You may lament the fact there are no home grown PPG forwards on this team, but the fact is "good" or "bad" drafting means dick when when you never sniff a lotto pick.

The drafting on this team is a clear jump ahead from where it was 10-15 years ago, during the dark ages. the teams drafting now is at WORST league average, maybe top 10. The fact that we can fill out half our roster with players taken in the 2nd and 3rd round speaks well for the draft record.

The anger at Richards is way over the top. He was a great player at one time and is getting paid for it now. He plays as hard as he can and is just not capable of much more right now. So...buy him out. I understand the disappointment but the vitriol? Don't get it; he's a class act giving us everything he has. Unfortunately, it's not that much.

Someone said the other night that not only is his skating putrid but he has issues handling the puck. Couldn't agree more.

Watching him handle the puck at the point on the PP makes my head hurt.

I just wonder if losing Cally, and then probably Richards in the off-season will affect the locker room in terms of leadership ability.

I got to admit, I thought the team would take a step back this season after trading Cally, but that hasn't been the case up to now.
