Fataldogg, really good post.

As the Rangers have seen, 60+ pt players don't grow on trees (at least not around here), so you have to pretty sure of a replacement. My issue is that if you don't get buy out Richards now, you are stuck with him for the next 6 seasons and for how many of them will he still be a 60 pt player?

IMO, Slats will buy out Richards and either do a "like for like" replacement by going after Stasny, or, he'll settle for an average C group of Step, Brass, Miller and throw the bank at a guy like Vanek

You people saying that we need him for the point on PP, do you see what i see? He doesnt make any important/beautiful passes, its the other players like MZA and Brass doing those. He's just moving the puck from side to side.
Brichards isnt important on the PP, neither on the team at all. I wouldnt mind seeing Brad getting scratched and Miller getting ice-time. And with the cap, Brad's just in the way atm.

And for people talking about his points and stuff - i cant remember the last time i witnessed anyone getting as much "free" assist as Brad has gotten this year.
The stats are misleading, he's lacking alot of effort, looks lazy and doesnt move his feet much. He's over the top by far. Get rid of him, try get something (anything) in a trade, or buy him out.

We have the best powerplay we've had in recent memory and you're suggesting the guy who plays the entire two minutes on nearly every one has nothing to do with it? Did Brad kick your dog or something? Was his goal last night due to his effortless floating up the ice and nabbing a quick freebee off of an easy tap in set up? :badidea: :scared:

If the team was fighting with Pittsburgh for top team in the East, then maybe keeping Richie would be a difficult question.

He's gone, and it's sad signing him didn't really work out. Especially sad after how his solid (but not elite) play helped us go to the ECF his first year here, but that time is gone.

he doesnt do much at the point to be honest...he moves it around, which is nice, but he never makes GREAT passes, or seldom does. He's got a good shot, but its not like he beats goalies clean all the time.

hes fine there, but nothing special.

Fowler plays on the left. He would have been on the 3rd pairing as he is not better than staal or McD.

So... No. He doesn't play the same position

Fowler is much better than Staal. I think the reason they didn't pick Fowler is because they thought he'd be redundant with Del Zotto on the team. Fowler is exactly what Del Zotto was supposed to become. He started as a guy who could only contribute offense, now he's turned into a #1/strong #2 on one of the best teams in the NHL. Del Zotto is still where he was four years ago.

As for the topic at hand, I would love to get Thornton but I highly doubt he hits free agency. The Rangers really should buy Richards out because he isn't worth the cap hit, but they have no other good options for a 1C. This is a really bad position to be in.

I swear, It's like this board gets more bipolar with each year since i've been here. What kind of insane statement is "i don't care how good he is / if he leads the team, I don't want him here he sucks"?

The only reason to complain about richards in any shape or form is his cap hit, If that were not an issue he would be on this team possibly till the end of the contract.

I'm a neutral party on whether to keep him or not but the main point is, There's no one that can really replace richards in free agency. Thornton? Give me a break who really thinks he's going to FA? No one else comes close to richards in production or experience where we need it (center)

All roads lead to Stastny, don't they? I know he'd probably fall behind the second half of his contract, but I'm not sure what other options we really have.

This post would've been accurate during last season. This season it's not. His play is noticeably better in every aspect, especially the effort part.

And if you don't think he's important to the PP then you're just watching with blinders on.

I'm very happy with Richie's play this year and I think he'll be a solid player for the next few years as long as he trains as hard every off season as he did this past one. The only negative about him right now is his contract. And even the cap hit isn't terrible for the production. He's making 1.4 more than David Clarkson. It's just the recapture issues.

I honestly think buying him out isn't as black and white as some think. If the brass thinks they can get 3-4 more solid years out of him, it might be worth it to keep him. Those are the prime years of Hank. 1a/1b of Richards and Stepan isn't the worst thing in the world when each can put up 60 pts.

The new CBA makes the Brad Richards contract a bad one, not Brad Richards or the Rangers. The last three years of Brads contract are one million in salary, it was front loaded and worked for both parties. It was the insistence of some owners and guys like Brian Burke that wanted front loaded contracts out of the CBA and to penalize Teams like New Jersey and New York that had them. (Could be part of the reason Mr. Burke was fired from Toronto, immediately after the CBA was signed, for following his own professed beliefs rather than what would have been better for the richest team in the NHL) I know Brad has a full NTC but if he agreed could he go to a team struggling to reach the cap floor, which will soon be rising as well as the cap, or did they close that loophole as well.

Hey guys, Flames fan with a question.

Is a buy-out a legit possibility?

I'm looking at the Capgeek buyout calculator and it seems like it makes no sense to buy him out. Not a lot of cap space is saved over time. And I'm thinking the Rangers aren't hurting in real dollars, so when he's leading your team in points, why buy him out?

Richards would qualify, if I understand correctly, as an amnesty buyout. The typical buy out penalty would not apply.

Huh. So then a buy out is legitimately in the cards? In the off season I presume. Interesting.

So how is Richards looking as a player? Is he worth chasing after a buyout?

Most definitely. He's having a bounce back year after his abysmal 12/13 season but he's still not the player he was in Dallas. If he continues to play the way he has all year he's essentially a lock to hit 55 points, probably more. I think he would fit really well on the Flames as a leader/mentor to a young squad, however IIRC he made a point in free agency to stay on the east coast so that his family could watch the games in PEI

It's in the cards because of the recapture penalty. If he retires with time left on his contract the caphit penalty is bigger than it would be under the old CBA.

However, with the cap expected to go up and Richards having a bounce back year it may not be as black and white as some here expect.

Richards has played very well this year, better than most want to give him credit for. And I think he is a very important figure in the room. I honestly think if the front office thinks they can get 3 more 60+ pt years out of Richards they will chance the penalty down the road.

Really sad it appears to be working out for the Rangers... but would love, love, love to see him on the Blackhawks next year.

They really should go all out on him giving him close to 5 million per for a few years.

Other teams will offer him more, but is he more concerned with winning another cup? Who knows, but he would be perfect for the hawks 2c spot.

He has rebound well this year. But the Rangers are going to be buy him out this summer. Hawks will have their opportunity to try to sign him if they want.

I think Richards stays in the eastern conference though.
