TSN: Brad Richards NOT being bought out

It's called open your eyes and evaluate, the SAME EXACT way people come to HF and debate all areas of a players game. We watched him every game, it was all there to see. 'Goal scorers goal', 'Garbage goal' we hockey fans hear these alot, what do you think that means?

Funny that on the main board, most think this a good move.

They have no idea compared to a fan that watched all season, a shortened season no less ?

Most people there didn't watch Richards slogg through the whole season. He looked like a little lost puppy out there, even when he was "hot" at the end of the regular season.

I wonder how much of this decision is due to the fact that the Garden is a publically traded company. Having to pay out so much dead money can't look good on a balance sheet. Although, Sather is so stubborn and thinks so much of his hockey ability that it could be mainly that too.

I don't think Richards will be more than a 60-70pt player ever again (especially not on the Rangers), but I'm confident in thinking that his play in the lockout effected season is the exception, not the rule

I'll answer you two questions as you asked me two....

1. i think it means most hockey fans try to over think things. Garbage goal, goal-scorers goal, who gives a ****? Sport is pretty simple, outscore the opposition. It doesn't matter how pretty it is, the scoreboard doesn't care.

Every season we here about player X's (not necessarily a Rangers player) totals don't really count as they weren't scored 'the right way', every season that's a load of crap.

We do need to start tracking these stats, otherwise we can't show that Hagelin's 24 points were more important than Richards' 34.

2. Historically how does Richards coming back from a lockout shortened season work out for the Rangers? I don't know.

How well does players coming back from a lockout affect the Rangers? Well in 05-06, remains to be seen for next season.

I agree it was risky when he signed, it's still risky now, but I'm still failing to see a better short term option

It's been quite a while since the RS/PO and it's funny because I can't remember if I was a Richards defender. Hard to imagine how anyone could defend Richards for the entire 58 games but in the off chance that I did defend Richards (now I am thinking I did in fact defend him, mainly because people were getting ridiculous), given that he pushes himself during the summer and comes back with a vengeance, both of which he'll do, he is still a 1C/2C on our team depending on whether Step elevates his game or not. If he does get his conditioning and mental focus back, the 1C that we saw in 2011-2012 at $6.67M a year isn't a bad deal, for a year or otherwise.

Also, people are complaining about the inherent lack of cap space to work with but this is a clear decision to rely on the youth a bit more in the upcoming season to lower the cap and second, working under the assumption Richards comes back playing good, replacing a good 1C/2C is going to cost us $4-$6M anyway.

From everything I remember, he decided not to file a grievance. He accepted the buyout even though he was injured.

Heatley,Havlat and Samuelsson are currently injured. The first two definitely can't be bought out. The latter is up in the air. He is still dealing with shoulder and pectoral injury. The player is claiming to be injured and doctors still need to clear him.

All three players were prime compliance buyout candidates. Injured players. No buyouts. That is the bottom-line here.

If Drury was injured instead of soaking the Rangers for another $3M or planning to file papers about his knee condition,he should have retired like Rafalski did. Rafalski gave up $6M.

Brad Richards from 2011-2012 is nothing to look forward to. He had like 30 good games out of 100. It was borderline the disaster this year was.

He chose not to apply for a medical exception, which isn't the same thing at all as saying he would've gotten one. The doctors would've been involved.

Players don't choose to stay on LTIR. They are deemed fit or unfit by a physician and the team makes the decision to put them on LTIR if unfit. Sometimes, they don't.

This is disappointing news.

If we're holding onto Richards for another year, it means the front office thinks we should go for it (in a stupid way, gambling on Richards turning back time). And that means we might make some stupid trades or free agent signings now to further compound that mistake.

You can't dig up. I hope next year Richards isn't injured and we have the chance to fill the hole with the compliance buyout instead.

FWIW, while I was far from pleased with his play and would have preferred to see him bought out, I never thought Brad was as bad as so many did.

Brassard hasn't maintained that level of play for a full season. Or even half a season.

We're saying Brass is a 2nd line center with less evidence than we have that Richards is no longer a top six player.

Everyone on here thought I was crazy and when I said he wouldn't be bought out. This is Glen Sather we're talking about here. There are too many excuses for him to put up on the chalk board to excuse Richards' play this season:

1. Lockout shortened season
2: Torts
3: No training camp
4: Gaborik not playing well
5: PP sucked
6: Everyone has an off year

I don't agree with any of those but Sather isn't about to own up to a mistake until he absolutely has to.

At this point, do we really care that much about Richards in 11-12?

Besides, that's a bit of a fallacy. 24 of his 66 points (36%) came in a 20 game stretch at the end of the season (24%) where the team was 10-9-1. In other words, when Richards played his best hockey, the team was a .500 team.

We put ourselves in a position to be 1st in the East without the benefit of the Brad Richards we expected to have and who we saw later in the year.

Yeah, he was scoring in the playoffs too. We played .500 hockey then too.

I was flip flopping on it a lot. Pretty much every other week or so I'd evaluate the situation and come up with different things every time, and while I actually like him and think he can turn it around, I just think it's a big risk to keep him now in the decline and risk that injury.

Using Richards contract on the books as leverage in negotiating all of the upcoming free agents they want to resign or extend....

From a business perspective I think that makes sense but it could also backfire in the Rangers faces. This a risky move, with higher risk than reward if you break it down IMO.

I wonder what happens with Brassard now that Richards is back. Does AV play him on the 2nd or 3rd line as a center? Or do they move him to the wing? Or do they use him as trade bait to fill another hole? I just want sunday to be done and over with already. Im sick of checking twitter and hfboards every 15 minutes.
