Petan never had the physical attributes and skills Lambert has. His potential was more in his hockey IQ and ability to make passes. It just never materialized at the speed of the game at the NHL level.

It's just one game so no concrete conclusions should be drawn (obviously) but it seems like Lambert has the requisite physical tools to play in the league. It's just a matter of seeing whether or not he can figure out the game at this level. If he lands on the Moose, we may have the answer sooner than later
Surprised oilers haven’t tried petan yet. He did have some good chemistry with McDavid at the world juniors

That said my mom would probably score a few goals if she played with McDavid

I will always remember the one “expert” scouting report on Petan… he would be another Brendan Gallagher at worst and another Martin St.Louis at best, lol.
People are so ridiculous about prospects. I get a kick out of people on here saying how stacked the team will be with prospects that will be lucky to play 30 games in the NHL.

Lambert at this point is this same ridiculousness taken to another level. It's fun to dream though and I love the pick for that reason alone. Sooner or later the Jets will luck into a star player. Maybe Lambert is the one.

I really don't see the ridiculousness, especially here. There are a few posters calling for him to get some games early, which is overzealous, but I remember the Petan mania we suffered around here.

Brad will do great in the AHL. His speed and iq alone will get him a shot at the NHL soon enough. He's been playing pro since he was 16, which was probably wrong but his patience and skill is really apparent.

Not gonna argue about Petan, although I still think that he might have found his way under different circumstances.

But loving your prospects and believing they’l hit the moon is one of the great parts of fandom, IMO, especially in their draft years. They’re still shiny and new and they help to erase the pain of the previous season.

Of course it’s a love in. He won’t play for the Jets for a while, but it‘s way more fun to blow up the virtues of an exciting young player with a dazzling skill set and some rough edges than it is to have a long and reasonable discussion in which expectations are soberly tempered and carefully goalposted. Yeah, it might be more accurate, but where’s the fun it it?

Maybe we need to open more “Simon Lundmark: Does he have the skill to make it as an AHL tweener or maybe a calm, steady 7/8? ” threads. But I doubt they’d be as busy as the super-skilled boom/bust maverick ones.

And yeah, Lambert’s game needs work. But we’ve now seen what he can do in terms of hounding the puck, forechecking at insane speeds and sniping a pure scorer’s goal. That’s exciting, and I’m definitely going to watch him develop with interest now.

A summer of 'Low IQ bust". Now there's too much hype lol.
I'm still really confused about that... reading back halfway through the thread, waves of people saying his problem is low hockey IQ and it's serious.... now people are saying his hockey IQ looks great? Was it ever even really that bad then? I've watched a few scouting vids on him. They seemed to point out his production took a huge hit when he switched teams to Pelicans. His teammates were so much worse, statistically.

Anyway, it looks like he can think plenty fast enough on his skates to me. I'm sure he's still got a lot to learn. But sometimes I wonder if the "hockey IQ" thing is just a reliable go to when a specific problem can't be easily identified. Eh just chock it up to "low hockey IQ", no one even seems to know what it precisely means....... It's kind of like "attitude problems" without the personal accusations. But I did notice, he got a few of those complaints too, with wild claims to go along with it sometimes. Which makes me think, everyone has a theory as to what went wrong and no one can actually prove any of them. But his game taking a huge hit is at least statistically correlated with switching to playing for Pelicans..... so I'd say it's' probably the best bet. Something specifically went wrong playing for them, bad team, talentless... he had to do so much and was the only creator, playing with men as a young adult. Who knows. It could have just worn him out.

Your point is taken, but I personally never thought Nic Petan would be a regular NHL player.

I admit it, I foolishly thought Nic Petan would become a top 6 forward based on his WJHC performance. I thought he would become our Johnny Gaudreau. Boy was I wrong :)

Not gonna argue about Petan, although I still think that he might have found his way under different circumstances.

I 100% trust management in their decisions and believe they will handle Lambert properly in his development. I personally hope he goes to juniors for a year to continue development and next year plays in the AHL unless he is absolutely electric in the WHL. The Jets do not need to rush development as they are deep in top 6 forwards and have some with the potential in the cupboard.

I was home watching the hockey game
The score was five to one, L.A. against the Flames
I heard footsteps, on the second floor
I knew it was Brad, and, boy, was I f***in' sore

I went flying up the stairs,
My room was in a shambles, my stuff was everywhere
Brad cowered in the corner, his lip curled in a sneer
"I'll fix you" I said,
"You little puke, get out of here!"

"Brad, no! Brad, leave it alone!
Not my hockey cards
Put them down, asshole!
Brad, no! Brad, leave that alone!
Not my Gameboy! No! No!"

Mom comes running in, she says,
"Dwayne, now don't you hit him!"
Brad starts to smirk
so I kicked him, the little jerk,
I said "I hate you! You dick!
I hate you! You dick!
You're not my little brother!
You're just a little prick!"

I tried to kick him in the teeth,
Mom said I was grounded for a week
I said "Please, Mom, please - Why is it always me?
I'm not the one that's bad!
I'm not the one that's bad!
It's Brad, you old cow! Don't you see?
It's Brad!"

"Brad, no! Brad, leave it alone!
Not my swimsuit issue!
Put that back under the pillow!
Brad no! Leave my smokes alone!
Steal dad's, or go buy your own!"

He went into my sister's room, across the hall
He said, "Dwayne's having a bird. You wanna play with the Barbie Dolls?"
I heard them laughing, they were laughing at me!
I heard Brad say "That Dwayne, he's such a dweeb"

"Brad, no! Wait till I get you alone!
You're gonna die, man!
You'll wish you'd never been born!
Brad, you f***!
Just wait, you little shmuck!
You're not getting away! No! No!"

I'm seriously considering getting my goalie stick and beating his f***in' head in

His IQ seems fine to me. In fact, looked like a strength tonight. Just buzzing all over the puck, setting up plays, and honestly wasn’t even bad defensively.

Maybe he read some “Hockey IQ for Idiots” books over the summer or something because I’m not seeing the “his hockey IQ sucks, like really bad, man!” takes that were beaten into our skulls this past summer.

That’s exactly what I said about Nic Petan a few years ago. Let’s temper expectations a bit and show a lot of patience.
To me the one thing Lambert has over Petan is speed. Lambert already has NHL level. Speed. Perhaps even elite NHL level speed.
I’de like to see him play a more full NHL roster to see how he stacks up.
