Sadly it appears that number will likely increase significantly.


12 dead, nearly 50 injured after 2 explosions rock Boston Marathon, law enforcement sources confirm

A federal law-enforcement source told The Post there are at least 12 dead and twice as many injured.

Horrible news. Nothing I can say. Puts our conniptions about the Rangers in perspective. Terrible that 2 have died. Only thing is to hope its no more than that and they catch whoever is responsible.

ANOTHER bomb just went off right by where I'm standing. People running, screaming, crying. INSANE!

I guess the third bomb wasn't planned as was reported.

My buddy and his prenant wife were a few blocks away. Her little brother just finished the marathon 50ft in front of where the explosions went off.

So unspeakably tragic. Thoughts and prayers are with those affected. And on one of the most festive days in Boston too. This world.

Just really sad. Kids of this generation are going to be so desensitized to mass death happening all the time.
 
Watching on-site security/paramedics/police running towards the blast area when they have no idea if there are more bombs (which there obviously was).

Real heroes.

This is scary stuff. I was watching the live stream this morning and a bunch of my teammates were running the race. Most of them have checked in though.

I think it's pretty premature to speculate as to motives right now. Generally terrorists target large crowds, large events and the symbolism of the event/venue is often less important.
 
I ran the 2001 and 2002 marathons. The sidewalks are packed 5 rows deep on Boylston. It's a madhouse every year.

So my guess it was RCIEDs initiated by cell phone. Ball bearings aren't usually in RCIED. Command wire or victim operated IEDs like pressure plates usually have ball bearings.

The Globe is reporting multiple IEDs that lined a 200 foot portion of the north side of Boylston. At least 4 x IED reported.

The level of sophistication bears the hallmarks of a skilled IED cell. I don't think this is some rogue.
 
Post is reporting a Saudi is in custody but with shrapnel wounds. Makes zero sense. If he was a suicide bomber he'd be stone dead. Guys who detonate remote IEDs don't stay anywhere near the blast radius.

seriously have to refrain myself from going an hunting down people in my dorm that somehow have the audacity to make jokes about this on facebook and twitter.
