Yesterday was a nightmare. I work 2 blocks from the 1st bomb. Only communication was via text and social media. No idea when work will re-open.

Level of sophistication? One or two guys dropped a couple of backpacks in an area where there are literally thousands as folks are finishing the race. The sad truth is this type of thing can happen at any time.

Making an RCIED is extremely difficult. You dont make one on your first try. When you consider both his IED's went off at different times at different locations, that means he used two different initiators.

AQ/TB/HQN all give their IED cells a ton of training before they even reach the execution phase.

Whoever did this knew what they were doing, had experience in explosives and spent weeks, if not months planning and coordinating it.

Any IED cell member will tell you "Dropping the backpack" is the last and easiest step of the hundreds it takes to make an attack successful.

There wasn't much sophistication...

Sophisticated would mean high grade explosives and a specialized detonation device.

From the news, it sounds like low quality home made explosives and a cell phone detonator. This COULD have been the work of 1 nutjob with some basic chemistry / engineering knowledge.

If it was HME/UBE, it obviously wasnt "low quality" if there are over 150 casualties.

I'm not saying it cant be some disguntled teenager or an ex-military type. I'm saying that whoever did this, regardless or color, creed or affiliation, knew what the hell they were doing, and the FBI/DHS/CIA have been very good at nipping the cells well before the execution phase.

For example, Lowe's and Home Depot must record and report individuals who purchase certain grades of fertilizer. Then you thrown in the internet habits of these guys. It's not like Adam Lanza who had access to guns via his parents and was on nobody's radar.

Explosives is a whole different ballgame.
