I got a lot of crap because I said he was a perfect candidate for a bridge considering he had never been a starter. Even I didn’t predict he’d drop off like this though the season isn’t even half over

Goalies are such voodoo i don't think big contracts are worth it unless you're really getting one of the best a la Vasilevsky, Hellebuyck, or Shesterkin.

Sorokin, Oettinger, Saros, Gustavsson and Demko too, all these guys are Elite.

The best goalies should be in the 7-8 M$ range but Shesterkin/Bob/Price's money is getting too intense

Swayman was never in that 1st tier, he's more in the Ullmark/Bobrovsky/Markstrom/etc tier

Now you have less proven goalies like Dostal, Daccord, Stolarz and Wolf joining that group.

Nobody has a clear idea how to evaluate goalies, even NHL teams struggle at it. Only career goalies have a better idea and even then it's not easy. I have been a goalie for 30+ years and I don't have all the answers. Remember that Andrew Hammond run in 2015? I called him a flash in the pan when he had a 20-1-2 record and a 0.941 SV%

It's because it is mostly mental and no one can see inside the head of these guys. If you make the NHL as a goalie you have the ability to stop pucks and the skills to be a great goalie.

What is hard is holding focus and having a clear mind for 82 + 16 while traveling, being tired and sore, and basically not allowed to make a mistake or it ends in the net no one is bailing you out.

I don't believe for example Price was that much more physically skilled than other goalies. I think he was rock solid mentally which let him play regardless of outside noise which is really hard to find.

And at that price I’d rather just settle with a good goalie rather than pay for a goalie at this price since none of the current goalies are actually elite anymore. I’d pay for skaters and settle with a good goalie at best. The upper echelon ain’t shit.

This. Invest more in elite defense and coaching to properly insulate a good goalie.

As a goalie for a long time, I can certify that it's pretty damn hard on the body, it's not as cardio as for players but the level of athleticism required is through the roof. I was at my best in my early 30's when I was training 3 times a week and playing 3 games a week. But then I had a surgery to the right internal meniscus and lost the rhythm. NHL goalies job is to get back on track ASAP though. I'm lucky as hell that it was my only surgery but also spent 6000$+ on back treatments. The constant bruises and recovering from playing is very demanding.

Seriously that's just the physical aspect. A goaltender's job is pretty hard, the play can take place at high speed and there's like 10 players fighting for the same little biscuit that can be fired at 100 km/h at any moment! It deflects and pinballs all over the place. I have seen so many skaters complaining over the years then getting very quiet once they tried it for one game lol

Price had a great physique for the job and flawless technique, that's what made him so good. Matt Murray has IMO the best body for a goaltender, light and large, same as me when I was younger but unfortunately I wasn't 6'4 (or you would have been watching me on TV! jk). But look at Murray for example, diminished by injuries a lot.

Gustavsson, Demko, and Oettinger have a combined history of 1 season of elite level play as a starter. And that season was shortened because Demko got injured.

Sorokin and Saros are proven elite level goaltenders. I don't think those 5 are in the same tier. I'd place Sorokin and Saros on a tier above, probably around Shesterkin, Hellebuyck, and Vasilevsky.

Interesting, looks like the start of a ranking

Tier 1 : Shesterkin, Hellebuyck, Vasilevsky, Sorokin, Saros

Tier 2 : Gustavsson, Demko, Oettinger

Is that it? Feel free to expand on it

I understand when you say that the "sample size" is not as big for Gustavsson, Demko, and Oettinger but to me they have proven to be elite based on ability and what they have done so far.

- Gustavsson : I followed him closely since he was a Senators prospect. I saw him live in the 2018 rookie tournament and went on the record to say "I have more faith in Kevin Mandolese"

I eventually did a full 180 on him during the 2020-21 season for what I saw in Ottawa and Belleville, he had figured out pro NA hockey. The following season he still had great stats in Belleville but not in Ottawa but it was to take with a giant grain of salt as he was completely left out to dry (Sens "team defense" was putrid). He has a 0.917 SV% since 2022-23, which is the 4th best during that stretch (Stolarz only 62 GP though). Also 4th best GSAA/60 since (Ullmark, Hellebuyck, Stolarz the Top-3 again)

- Demko to me was a revelation in the playoffs series vs Vegas in 2020, he seriously looked invincible. He had a 0.985 SV% in that series and 9.8 GSAA in 4 games lol. The most dominant performance I had seen in a while. He has been slowed down by injuries a lot, he only played 2 seasons more than 35 games and he received Vezina votes in both, once 2nd and once 7th.

- Oettinger is going to be USA 2nd goalie, maybe even their starter if Hellebuyck chokes on pressure. He's very talented. He is only 25 y/o so started in 2020-21 and has a career 0.913 SV% so far in a period where the NHL average is more around 0.904. He's also 10th in GSAA/60 since then (but smaller sample sizes for Stolarz, Daccord, Woll and Andersen). One could argue only Ullmark, Hellebuyck, Gustavsson, Sorokin, Shesterkin have been better)

So what is the magic number for games for it to count? Swayman has 153 and Oettinger has 213. 8800 minutes for Swayman and 12200 for Oettinger.

Looks like a guy that's deep in his own head right now

He'll straighten it out imo...right? Right?

So far sitting at a .885sv% and 3.27 GAA this season. Let in 8 goals last night.

Sweightman?

Sounds better out loud than it looks in writing

Our franchise will not accomplish anything with this albatross deal on the books. We're paying top 5% NHL goalie price for the worst goalie in the league. For 8 years. This was quite literally a franchise destroying signing.

We're looking at the mid 2030's for us to be competitive again
