Bolts fan question re Girardi

In a a zone defensive system where forwards come back deep to make themselves available for outlet passes (as our team had from 2005-2013) I think he could be adequate in a 3rd pair pk specialist role.
You mean behind the own net deep, where they steal the puck from Dan's stick before he has the chance to get rid of the puck? Yeah, that could work. Otherwise, no. Girardi will be fine in a zone defense, playing 12 minutes a night, where his teammates know if he has the puck, he will turn it over. And oh, his opponents better be slow.

If Tampa is planning to play Girardi on the 1st pairing with Hedman, they won't make the playoffs.

I mean he wont have to chase as much which helps with his limited mobility but doesn't help his puck moving which has really been the worst thing about him.

I think his short range puck movement is still ok. Not great, but adequete. Zone systems are better for that too.

I think some people nailed it here, that he will be effective on a bottom pairing with less mins but is also a heart and soul guy, blocks shots, and a great lockeroom guy. He was playing over his head in NY, and think with sheltered mins he will be more than fine. He did have a very impressive series against Montreal, and apparently had a foot injury he was skating with. So think maybe with a new team and players, he could find the fire again.

Nope. He's awful. I hope they play him with Hedman like Yzerman said.

I like Tampa Bay, especially since I love the area Amalie arena is in and catch a game down there once in awhile. I genuinely feel bad for them, this is nothing like the Callahan trade where you will get one good season out of him. G's been an AHL quality defenseman for 3 seasons already.

He's slow and can not make an outlet pass to save his life. You hear nonsense like Girardi," doesn't get walked". Well fact is he backs in so damn much the only way to walk him is to go around the net. He's just not a good player and he was terrible in the playoffs aside from a game or two.

I am sorry but if I am a Bolts fan I would be sick over this signing, it's terrible.

I'm a big Dan fan. I'm a fan for who he is as a person. With that said I do not really understand TB's moves. Didn't they trade Drouin in part for cap reasons? Why sign Dan and Kunitz then for 5-6 mill?

A foot injury.. that is putting it lightly. His ankle was so blown up he had to cut a huge hole in his skate in order to fit his foot in it. That is my thinking why we kept Staal over him. Maybe JG knows that ankle is something that is going to cause problems down the road.

Equally as surprised from the tweet was that the Bolts are still going in with a washed up Braydon Coburn in their top 4.

There's a point where this is just beating a dead horse over and over.

This thread started by a Lightning fan who already had made up his mind anyway.

Hate to say it but alot of the hate in this thread isnt unwarranted.. He is a dumpster fire on defense. Tampa fans prepare to see him drop to a knee or lay on the ice as a main form of defense. Him and staal towards the end of the year were exposed for this. players would fake a shot or look at the net G would drop to a knee and they'd walk around him

Players like Staal and Girardi are out in today's NHL. It's all about speed and transition. Staal moves in slow motion. Just go back and watch Game 5 against Ottawa when Staal got stripped by Ryan and he went the other way for a breakaway.

We would have traded him to you for 50% retained for Sustr and saved you money....

Girardi wouldn't have waived though. Smart on him, now he gets his BO money + 6 million that he makes from this contract.

Not good for our hopes to have Staal waive his no trade in the future though. He'll just say buy me out and I'll take my chances at getting a new deal in free agency just like Girardi did.

The new contract doesn't affect the buy-out.

He would have made 4m in salary this year, now he makes 3m in Tampa, 1.6m from his buy-out

this is his NYR buyout schedule:

SEASN CAPHIT CASH
17-18: $2.61M $4,000,000
18-19: $3.61M $3,000,000
19-20: $3.61M $3,000,000
20-21: $1.11M
21-22: $1.11M
22-23: $1.11M

Contract Prior to Buyout:

SEASN CAPHIT CASH
17-18: $5.50M $5,000,000
18-19: $5.50M $4,000,000
19-20: $5.50M $4,000,000

So, I guess with the buyout the Rangers have to pay him $3M less, but he's covering that with a $6M contract in Tampa and one less year.

Rangers win, Dan wins, Tampa loses - that's what I call a win-win-win

Don't confuse cap-hit with salary. That total salary includes a signing bonus, which Girardi gets regardless of being bought out.

1m in signing bonuses, plus a base salary of:

2017-18: 4m
2018-19: 3m
2019-20: 3m

That's a total of 10m. He gets 2/3 of that, 6.6m in total, stretched out over twice the duration of the remaining contract, which is 3 years. 6.6m over 6 years is 1.11m per year he gets until 2022-23.

His income before buy-out:
2017-18: 4m
2018-19: 3m
2019-20: 3m

For a total of 10m

His income after buy-out:
2017-18: 3.25m + 1.1m = 4.35m
2018-19: 2.75m + 1.1m = 3.86m
2019-20: 1.1m
2020-21: 1.1m
2021-22: 1.1m
2022-23: 1.1m

For a total of 12.6m

Since he gets his money from the Rangers either way, it's odd he would get more money for being not-as-good-as-the-original-contract. I mean, that's what a buyout says. I wonder if there's more to the math. Or is it just a bone thrown to the NHLPA?
In fact, ideally, whatever Tampa pays should be deducted from what the Rangers are paying.
Anyhow, good for Dan if true. But it's a bit confusing.
