Crazy thought...if Tkachuk is dead set on coming here, how willing would Calgary be to eat salary? And how much extra would it cost for them to retain anywhere from 25-50% of his salary this year? I know it's unrealistic, just trying to figure out ways to add him this year without gutting the team.
would likely cost 2 1st rounders i would think

Blues should move Scandella, Barbashev to make cap space then see what else can be done for space. Krug's 6.5 is who I think would be most likely to be moved if Perunovich is ready to go.

Which he's shown nothing, yet, that he can be trusted beyond being heavily sheltered.

In terms of movable players on the roster, I view it as follows:
1. Tarasenko
2. Barbashev
3. Scandella

Krug is further down the list.

I’d move Neighbors or Bolduc for MT and possibly both if it meant we keep Kyrou.

I kinda think the Strickland guarantee is significant. Strickland is sometimes a clown but he usually doesn’t guarantee things and he obviously talks with the Tkachuk family a lot.

It just feels like one of those things destined to happen, but we’ll see. Crazy and exciting indeed.
What guarantee? I missed something.

EDIT - Saw your response further down the thread.

Checking CapFriendly, we're 600,000 under the cap. Tkachuk is a 9mil AAV RFA, so in order to even ice him on opening night, we have to ship out at least 8.5 million dollars worth of contracts. I've got to think Tarasenko and at least one of Scandella, Mikkola or Perunovich have to leave in order to get the 8.5 million we need.

That, of course, also means that we cannot take back any cap in those trades, not unless we essentially do a three team deal in order to send the Tarasenko return to Calgary.

Either way, I'm all on board for Tkachuk. Keith's time here be damned, Matt is a hugely talented winger whose advanced AND regular stats indicate a player well worth 9 or 10 million a year. The top 6 BluesMed listed off is a deadly one with our best prospects waiting in the wings. We aren't getting any younger and the time to strike is now, IMO, especially if we lose out to Nashville and have to face Matty for the next eight years. UGH.

I have kept out of the Tkachuk trade talk because it has been a utter shit show thus far but just want to throw in a couple of quick thoughts I have had since this all blew up a few days ago.

1. Kyrou should not be on the table in any way for Tkachuk. Because of Tkachuk's contract situation he is essentially 1 year away from UFA from a team that he has stated he won't be re-signing with. I don't care that he is a 100+ point player that 1 year doesn't hold the same value as a PPG player with several more years of control.

2. Tarasenko will have to be moved, either as part of this deal or in a separate deal to open up the cap space to afford Tkachuk's contract. Another reason why Kyrou won't be a piece moved as it would not open enough space and the Blues aren't going to let two PPG players go (Kyrou and Tarasenko) to bring in Tkachuk.

3. If the Blues do trade for Tkachuk I could see it becoming a three-way trade. One in which we trade Tarasenko to another team, perhaps NYI or NJD, take our return for Tarasenko throw a sweetener on top and use that to obtain Tkachuk.

Agree, but one thing. Tkachuk would be a trade and sign.

For some reason I can see ROR really slowing down after this year.
oh well if that's your gut feeling then let's get rid of our Bergeron so we can overpay a soft one dimensional guy whose inner fire is funneled into passion for sick cellys and who can't be bothered to check Mackinnon in the closing minutes of an elimination game as he streaks right by

Not sure how that changes anything. Calgary is trading away 1 guaranteed year of Tkachuk, whether or not Tkachuk signs with his new team after the trade does not affect his value in my eyes. Flames are in a situation where they have no leverage. If Tkachuk doesn't get traded where he wants to go he just waits a year and signs with the team he wants to be with. According to Strickland and other media reports, that team is the Blues.

Let’s see where he’s at after this year. Hopefully he stays like this year for a while.

Its been reported that Tkachuk wants to sign an extension this offseason coming off career highs. The trade compensation Calgary receives will likely be based on Tkachuk already having agreed to an extension to where ever he is traded.

Not sure if the Blues will be given the chance to sign him as a UFA. It would be nice if MT just played the contract out and signed in the offseason but I don't think it's going to play out that way.

Previously, I'd have agreed with you that there is no way in hell that the Blues would trade Kyrou. However, having seen the extension that Thomas just got, its easy to extrapolate what Kyrou will command. Fitting in Tkachuk, O'Reilly and Kyrou next season would be extremely difficult. It is poor asset management to deal Kyrou to Calgary for Tkachuk but considering the cap ramifications moving forward, I could see it happening. The other alternative would be to trade Kyrou in a separate deal if you can scrape together enough value to pry Tkachuk from Calgary without including Kyrou.

Tkachuk is only 6 months older than Kyrou and has averaged a point per game over the past 4 years. He has many prime years remaining. I’d hate to lose Kyrou or buchy or any of our top prospects, but let’s be clear. None of them are likely to ever be as impactful as Tkachuk is now. And none of them should be off the table in a deal for Tkachuk. The only question to me is how many and in what combination are we willing to deal.

I am not at all on board with "letting ROR walk" in order to prioritize the likes of Jordan Kyrou. That is so gross
This.

No thanks to letting O'Reilly walk unless his contract demands are unreasonable or if he completely drops off this coming season (not going to happen). He's too important. And the longer he's a Blue, the more he's going to rub off onto a player like Thomas which can only do good. You move on from O'Reilly when it's time for a significant retool. If you let him walk after this coming season, it would be a couple years too soon in my opinion. There's still a few #1 two-way center years left in him which is extremely valuable to a Cup contender. And he's a proven playoff performer. There's only a handful of other guys in the league that do what he does.

It'll be tight and almost assuredly means Barbashev leaves next year, but we can narrowly fit ROR back if we rely on youth to fill the bottom six and keep a Kyrou deal below 8 million. If it comes down to ROR vs. Kyrou (which I think depends on if we get Tkachuk, if we don't have Tkachuk we keep both), you keep ROR unless he's going for a bag. His defense should age well and leadership doesn't age.
