I know Panarin is amazing, but I don't see anyone else on the roster (Zibanejad) aside that could score 42 points in 47 games at center. Not Chytil, not Howden. So who else do you put in that spot? Strome has been successful with Panarin and is now a very valuable commodity. You have to live with his limitations.

It's like complaining about Fast in the top six. Okay. Sure. He doesn't belong there. Who is he holding down? We're not exactly flush with forward talent, guys are going to be asked to play above their heads.
I just don't think it's too much to ask for Strome to backcheck hard and be smart with simple things like changes and defensive positioning. Both of his linemates are terrific at all of those things.

For tonight I think they played well and with good structure for 55 minutes but man that change was THAT bad that it basically overshadows it at least in the immediate aftermath. I just can't get over going to the bench when you're the 3rd man on a 3 on 3 going into your own zone with 30 seconds left and gifting the other team a 3 on 2. Just absolutely horrible.

I’ve been whining for months that Strome yes puts up points but he’s awful defensively. He gets killed against top centers and stuff like this what he did to cost us this game is why he shouldn’t be playing in the top 6. I’d gladly substitute a few goals for that line to have a center (chytil) that plays an actual 2 way game.

Strome should be a third line center and no where near the ice in a situation like that.

Ehh not really

Yes really. After watching Brady Skjei as the 1LD for so long now, I f***ing miss McDonagh.

That trade appears to be a major flop too depending on how Lundkvist pans out.

I probably would have preferred to give McDonagh the contract Tampa have him then overpaying Trouba like NYR did.

.

sure but they had a dreadful third period and abandoned all of that structure.

More to the point, Columbus started finding ways of breaking through the structure and the Rangers weren’t figuring out how to adapt to that. We actually saw that starting to happen at the end of the second.

It’s the whole adjusting to what the other team is throwing at you that separates the truly solid defensive teams from the mediocre ones. When I say adjusting, I don’t mean changing the structure. I mean finding ways within the existing structure to counter what’s happening.

And THAT is a learning process. One that the team is struggling with. This isn’t the first time in the last few weeks that the team has completely broken down very late in a game. There have been some significant improvements lately, but they’re not there yet.

1) It’s very likely that should they not have traded McDonagh, they aren’t as bad last year and miss out on Kaako.
2) You need to NY rate McDonagh’s contract so his cap hit would be higher
3) This assumes McDonagh would have stayed rather than sign with a better team when he reached UFA. IMO, this is a bad assumption.
4) McDonagh’s contract was more than likely not going to be an issue in the early years, it’s the latter years that are likely to have teeth for any team.

The lack of back pressure on Columbus’ game winning goal is inexcusable. Really thought the Rangers would win that game if it went to overtime. Can’t lay that on Strome entirely. Lemieux was not exactly busting it back either( I was at the game.)

What bothered me more was the carelessness with the puck in the third. With 4 minutes or so to go the Rangers tried to turn that into river hockey. That’s often their go to move in the third. Rather than tightening up, they try and open the game up. It’s just not a winning strategy over the course of the season.

Whatever, . The main point was it’s very easy to miss him when Brady f***ing Skjei is your 1LD

That was frustrating

Agreed but not surprising tho. This is what the Jackets are about and what they do to teams.

I know alot of folks are chatting up Mike Sullivan for the Adams award as best coach considering the job he's done with all the injuries the Penguins have had.

I'm firmly in the Torts corner for coach of the year. What he continually does with unsung mediocrish type talent to keep his teams not only relevant but playoff worthy is phenomenal.

He's doing it again this year with a team that we have 10x the amount of talent than and yet they are 10 points ahead of us. Just a masterful job by Torts and it shows once again that we are a year away from being in the playoff mix as playoff teams don't lose games like tonight.

I dunno, I'm not even mad...I'm kind of resigned to losses like this as we simply are too green still, to many players are still so inexperienced. These kinds of losses happen to teams like us. Next year will be a different story but for now, this is what we are....a team that can beat the Lightning and Bruins one night and lose to the Senators the next....it is what it is and tonight was another example of the inconsistency of our team.

Well that’s fair because McDonagh is a solid #2. Pretty much the same as Trouba. Skjei, ideally, is a #3.

I think ideally, Gorton would LOVE to have:

#1LD-Trouba
Skjei-ADA
Lindgren-Fox

that’s where people should slot. And Skjei makes what a good #3 should make.

Late in the game is the Columbus wheel house. Calm and composed team.

That's called coaching my friend...coaching. And they have the best coach in the league teaching them how to win and how to be professionals.

We'll get there soon enough but we aren't quite there just yet. This loss isn't on Quinn and for those asking for his head not offense is ridiculous. These kind of losses happen to teams that have 7 players under the age of 20 rostered...just the way it is.

He wasn’t going to accept the same contract for us. No point on reminiscing over MCD. He was great while he was here and now he’s not.

Same old shit. Hindsight is 20/20.
Half this never-p;a board wanted to run McDonagh out of town.

This should put the playoff talk to rest. Team can’t string together more than two wins in a row while teams ahead of us do and find ways to go to 3 points games

Yeah we discussed this pre game. So long as we hang around the playoff periphery should be good enough for all of us....our young pups get to play in important games like tonight and they learn what it's like playing stressful intense games.

That said, the playoffs were and always have been a pipe dream. Sure we can beat the Tampa's, Boston's, Colorado's of the world and get us all excited about the potential of our team. But we just as easily can lose to the Ottawa's, Detroit's and Kings of the world the next night.

Let's not kid ourselves, this season has been a wild success even with no playoffs. Sure Kravtsov being here would be nice. Sure Lias Andersson not being so stupid and stubborn would have been nice. And yeah maybe even Kakko not coming here so out of shape that he still struggles to keep up with the pace of play is a bit dissapointing. But for every Lias we can bitch about, we also have an Adam Fox who has been a relevation he's been so good. We have a Chytil who looks like he's about a year away from starting to really put it together. And we have goaltending that should take us thru the next decade after the best goalie we've ever had retires.

So overall...yeah we won't make the playoffs but shit, this year has really been damn good.
