How many years does Dion have left on contract after this season? Haven't read the whole thread ( at work).

5.

His contract expires after Karlssons current contract expires.

Edit: His contract expires 2 years after Karlssons current contract expires. I made a mistake. Sorry.

Unless you think Chabot will be in the NHL at 19, Phaneuf and Methot will be almost done their deals by the time Chabot should be kicking down the door for a top 4 position.

Realistically, Chabot spends another year in junior, and then a year or two in the AHL, and then starts in the NHL as a bottom pairing guy. So, 3-5 years.

I don't think acquiring Phaneuf makes it that much easier to move Chabot because his development should stagger with Methot and Phaneuf declining/contracts running out.
Yep ,this deal helps Chabot and Ceci alot .Lots to like with this deal tbh :handclap:

Why am I so excited about this deal, it's only Phaneuf....

So what do the Murray haters have to say now?

We gave up a 2nd.

:sarcasm::laugh:

I think I like this but I'm really not sure.

Money wise we dump 11.7 next season but pick up 33 over 5.

You realize Phaneuf will cost 4.26* per season for 5 years? (in a raising cap which means higher salaries)

Well, 4.26 + the cost of the guy who will replace Michalek as a 3rd line Winger (Prince?)

* (33-11.7)/5 = 4.26

Sad to lose Lindberg, he probably ends up the best player in this deal.

lol... I like Lindberg but the chances that he ends up better than Dion Phaneuf are very slim... comon don't let the bias be so obvious at least

It's clear we are in win now mode even though we still are closer to winning anything than before. That contract is going to be terrible in a couple of years. Oh well, at least Greening and Cowen are gone.

I am really surprised by your POV on this!

Dollars are more important for the Sens as they aren't a cap team. Phaneuf will not cost a lot of money to the Sens with 11.7 in savings (33 - 11.7 = 21.3 for 5 years!) + Prince + whoever replaced Greening (McCormick/DD)

murray said toronto was on michalek's no move list, and waived that

What an awesome guy Michalek is. Sacrifice himself for the good of his friends. :amazed:

Phaneuf will likely start with Ceci. "He's going to play lots," says Cameron. #Sens

As long as Phaneuf doesn't have to face the toughest competition, we'll be getting good quality ice-time.

His contract expires after Karlssons current contract expires.

The prospect that Phaneuf might be a Senator and Karlsson not be in a few years is incredibly frightening.:help:

Now that the LHD is more stable would we be interesting in flipping Chabot for Drouin?

I love Chabot and think he will be a stud but picking up someone with Drouins skillset would be huge.

Acquiring Phaneuf makes Wier big time expendable. Before, we always were hesitant to trade one of him or Cowen for anything other than an upgrade on D, because we relying on whichever one we didn't trade to solidify himself as a top 4 D.

Now, our top 4 is pretty much set in stone. We have Wiercioch, Claesson, Boro and Wideman who are all capable in the bottom pair role. We have Chabot who is a year away (not next season but 2017-18).

We can move a bottom pair Dman and not miss a beat. I see Wier getting moved for picks or part of a package for a top 6 forward.

Yup see ya later Wier, loving this trade right now too bad it wasnt Chiasson instead of Milo but they need to clear the money for next year to sign Hoff.

After Leafs were on the "road to winter classic" I found Dion quite stiff and seemingly without humor. I guess Erik may loosen him up :O)

On a serious note....how has Dion played recently?
How does the braintrust here think Cameron will play him, how will the pairings look like?

Not sure the cap will be going up, likely the same or slightly downward, though I still don't think his contract is going to be a problem.

Rather have Phaneuf facing the toughest competiton than Wiercoich or Boro.

Methot,s contract expires at the same time as EK,s ,so there is almost 5 mil .And by buying Chabot some development time he should be ready to take his spot in the top 4 by then .So i dont think we move Chabot for a winger

Oh my bad.

I just now came to the sudden realization that Karlsson only has 3 years left after this season.

Getting Phaneuf will likely help. Can't see Karl wanting to leave. It's not something I'd worry about at all at this point.

Murray will likely try to make a deal and salvage something for him, but PW is done in Ottawa with this trade.

Wait if Phaneuf waived to come here did he ask for a trade? You think you'd only waive to get out. Especially to a team on your list.

I like this trade, we needed D help, Phaneuf slots into that need. Cowen unfortunately did not work out here, Greening well.... and it's said to see 9MM go (not mention Tobias). If I spending 7-8 million, I'd rather see that on the ice than in the press box/Bingo.

I really think teams not being able to send young guys down like Cowen once they play two many games is dumb and such a short sighted rule on the NHLPA's part. Cowen really could have benefited from playing down in Bingo.... oh well.

He didn't have to waive. His modified NMC required him to submit a list of 10 teams he'd accept a move to, if asked. Clearly the team asked, he provided, and they followed through.

Anyone know anything at all about the other guys outside of Frattin and Phaneuf?

Bailey was one of the college UFAs that we signed last year. He's bound for a career in the AHL I think

Rupert is a bit of a wild card. I think he's got the highest upside in terms of NHL potential.

Donaghey I have no idea about to be completely honest in terms of upside. Still young, but can move the puck

For the 1st time in his career Phaneuf won't be asked to be a #1 D, since moving on from the Flames and Leafs.
