very happy with this team. this should fix our D completely. everyone now can be slotted right and not have to play above themselves.

Methot - Karlsson
Phaneuf - Ceci
Boro - Wideman

is should also help Ceci a ton as he no longer has to carry the second pair. Phaneuf will take a ton of pressure off Ceci and let him get back to his game and start improving again. this should also let us not rush Chabot into a top 4 role which will be huge for his development.

losing Lindberg and a 2nd sucks but it is a small price to pay for fixing our D and saving Ceci/Chabot's development.

He didn't waive, he had a list of 10 teams that he would accept. Ottawa was on the list.

The way BMurr works, I'm sure he made sure Dion was eager to play here for the next 5 years.

Edit: sorry, already answered, and you were asking if Dion had asked to be moved. I don't think he asked per se, but Babcock justified the move to be in Dion's favour since he wouldn't have the longevity to benefit from a long rebuild.

Thanks anyways though. Seems I misunderstood the situation.

One does have to wonder if it affects him and his decision to stay though.

Methot is his best friend. The team bent over backwards to sign him when Karlsson asked him to do so.

This is a business. EK knows that. He's also got his hero Alfredsson back as his mentor.

Do you go out of your way to be the resident Debbie Downer around here?

Ha. He probably put Ottawa on that list thinking that the Leafs would NEVER try to trade him here.

or maybe he wanted to stay in the area (like MacArthur) so he had team in the area (Ottawa, Montreal, Buffalo, etc)

or he might of wanted to play in Canada if he could so he put all the Canadian teams on his list.

If you can turn a 4th rounder into a key piece to land that mythical top 4 d-man that everyone is clamoring for, that's pretty good asset management.

I am far from the biggest DD on here or on Senators twitterverse, but go on keep throwing out your attacks.

This was a great deal for the Sens.

Dion Phaneuf is a lot better than he is perceived by some on HF boards. He has been Toronto's best Defenceman since he put on a Leafs jersey from the first day to his last day. You may get some posts that say others have been better. But none have been for an extended amount of time. His best D partner was Gunnarson, so I would say he would fit in well with someone like that.

For some reason fans never fully appreciated him in Toronto. But that does not diminish what he is as a player. I think Ottawa will like what he brings. I would not be surprised he will make a big splash tomorrow in his Sens debut. A big hit, fight, a goal. Any of the 3. He will probably want to set the tone early.

And now without the extra burden of wearing the C on his jersey, I see him going out there and just playing like he can.

Nice deal by Murray, and I am happy for Dion.

Anyone mention that this deal also improves our powerplay with Phaneuf on one side & Karlsson on the other, two legit PP defencemen.

Lots to like about this deal from an Ottawa perspective, they get a legit 2nd pairing two way defenceman with size, grit & hard to play against, should help reduce goals against. Plus he helps Ceci improve, he brings some leadership as an x-captain in the room that helps Karlsson & as I said above he improves the special teams (PP & PK). Ottawa just got a lot better thanks to BM.

For the most part he was, but last year Gardiner was better than him and this year both Gardiner and Rielly have been better.

It's a huge blow to our D to let him go, but it was necessary for the future.
Definitely going to miss his big open ice hits which you guys will love

I wonder if Bobby Ryan will try and wear his #9 again now that Michalek is gone..
Love this trade for Ottawa!

Honestly, this deal kind of feels like the Spezza deal, but in reverse.

I've tried to see how this deal is anything but good for us.....and I can't see it.

We didn't lose anything crucial and gained that elusive top-4 veteran guy to pair with Ceci.

Cowen won't be missed at all, Michalek will to a certain degree but considering he's the only decent player going the other way.....it's quite acceptable.

Murray done good. Not sure what the consensus is on here as I haven't read anything, but people should be incredibly happy to have gotten Phaneuf without losing one important piece.

Excellent point.

We're banking on Phaneuf having 5 more years left in the tank. If he does, it's a win for us.

On paper, he solves almost every problem this team has.

He eats mins. He kills penalties. He can fire off some one-timers on the PP. He's physical.

His contract is really the only truely negative part of the trade, and it's not that bad all considered.

I'd honestly play Phaneuf with Karlsson. His CF% was much higher with Gardiner than without, and Gardiner plays a similar style to Karlsson. Let Methot be Ceci's veteran stabilizer.

One does have to wonder if it affects him and his decision to stay though.

Why? Why would it affect anything? You think he has such a bromance with Michalek that he will follow him to play in Switzerland in three years when EK's deal is up?? I don't get this kind of thinking.

Players play for two things. Money and to win. He can hang with his friends in the offseason if he wants.
