For the most part he was, but last year Gardiner was better than him and this year both Gardiner and Rielly have been better.

It's a huge blow to our D to let him go, but it was necessary for the future.
Definitely going to miss his big open ice hits which you guys will love

Gardiner was a disaster last year after signing his long term contract. He has been better under Babcock I will agree there. But Dion has been the Leafs best D man since he was traded to the Leafs. Gunnarson in actuality was probably the Leafs 2nd best D man in that timespan. Rielly is just starting to come along and will now probably be Leafs best D man now that Dion is with Ottawa.

Further I think part of the reason why he is underrated by Leafs fans is expectations. They were probably too high since he 1st arrived. Now with Ottawa he can just fit in as part of the D as opposed to being the whole D.

I've tried to see how this deal is anything but good for us.....and I can't see it.

We didn't lose anything crucial and gained that elusive top-4 veteran guy to pair with Ceci.

Cowen won't be missed at all, Michalek will to a certain degree but considering he's the only decent player going the other way.....it's quite acceptable.

Murray done good. Not sure what the consensus is on here as I haven't read anything, but people should be incredibly happy to have gotten Phaneuf without losing one important piece.

I like Michalek, but if/when MacArthur comes back, it renders Michalek obsolete in every way. I'd rather Prince or Dzingle on the 4th line when you factor in salary, and Hoffman, MacArthur, and now Smith seem to be playing better on the LW than he has in ages.

Anyone mention that this deal also improves our powerplay with Phaneuf on one side & Karlsson on the other, two legit PP defencemen.

Lots to like about this deal from an Ottawa perspective, they get a legit 2nd pairing two way defenceman with size, grit & hard to play against, should help reduce goals against. Plus he helps Ceci improve, he brings some leadership as an x-captain in the room that helps Karlsson & as I said above he improves the special teams (PP & PK). Ottawa just got a lot better thanks to BM.

I completely agree with everything you just said.

'Tis really quite the amazing trade when I find myself agreeing with you!

Well Phaneuf is now 2nd in scoring by defenceman on the Sens, thats a big plus. Someone who can get the puck up the ice.

Lots of positives here.

I hope they go with Phaneuf Karlsson as a pairing. I think he could really blossom as a pure stay at home defender with no pressure to put up points. Like this for Ottawa

Speaking of MacArthur, I saw in the interview about the trade that he had helmet marks on his head.

I guess I havent been following his status too much lately...so hes skating in full gear. Is he getting close to a return?

Dion hasn't been our best d-man for 2 years.

And Ceci seems to be trending upwards improving rapidly & putting up pts as well.

While I have already calmed down a bit and am a bit more accepting on the deal, good points made here...

Before last night’s victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Senators were projected as having a six-percent chance of making the playoffs per HockeyViz.com.

And even with Phaneuf, it’s going to be difficult for the Senators to make a playoff push and even if they do get in, is this roster going to be able to win a round or two?

To quote Daniel Alfredsson, “Probably not.”

To me, they’re still that same perennial playoff bubble team and in moving two more young assets in Tobias Lindberg — who Pronman ranked as Ottawa’s 14th best prospect this past summer — and a 2017 second round pick, the Senators continue to deplete a farm system that has been widely panned beyond Thomas Chabot and Colin White.

I like seeing this organization win, but I’ve already grown tired of the whimsical “get into the playoffs and anything can happen” approach to team-building. I want and demand more from this franchise.

I believe that acquiring a contract of this magnitude when you’re a budget team and the player is on the wrong side of 30 is absolutely reckless. When the limitlessly budgeted Toronto Maple Leafs are trying to get out from under a player’s contract and refuse to eat any of his salary, that should tell you something…

But maybe when you’re Bryan Murray and you’re contemplating retirement, you don’t give two *****. You’ll continue to overpay for past production and chase name players whose best years are behind them because you won’t be the GM in a few years who’ll have to foot the bill.

Doubtful, although you'll see them on the PP together for sure.

By putting Phaneuf on the 2nd pairing, it really solves most of our problems on D. No need to stack the 1st pairing.

I think he could still excel on the PP. If he can get his shot on goal, it is still a very lethal weapon. If someone like Karlsson can feed him one timers. I can see a Kaberle - McCabe thing as I am sure Sens fans recall those 2. Happening here.

Methot is his best friend. The team bent over backwards to sign him when Karlsson asked him to do so.

This is a business. EK knows that. He's also got his hero Alfredsson back as his mentor.

Do you go out of your way to be the resident Debbie Downer around here?

While Karlsson is close to Methot, it is Milo who is his best friend, and was also his best man at his wedding, from what I recall. While it is a business we can't diminish the human aspect to this. For us, the fans it is easier, but for the players it can be tough. I am sure EK will eventually get over it, but it will take time.

Did I wake up today in an alternate universe? One where the Leafs and Sens are regular trade partners?

errr...what? if the issue was that alfie was not traded but screwed by the Sens that has already been fixed.
other than that, i really am not sure what you mean.

Good points? LOL. All I see is hatred. Lindberg our 14th best prospect (as in, we have THIRTEEN people better than him not in the NHL) and a "young asset" in 2017... Yeah, big losses there.

White, Chabot, Puempel, Prince, Dzingel, Gagne, Chlapik, etc. Is fine for forward depth, especially considering young guys like Hoffman, Stone, Pageau, Zibanejad are actually on the team... We dealed from a position of STRENGTH.

Kudos to Murray. Can't wait till tomorrow's game.
