Good for him but his offensive surge is obviously due to playing with Malkin. He's got so much open space now and he has a good shot.
If I'm the Pens GM I offer 2x2 2.5x2 2x3 and hope he takes it. If not then he go to another team and get his payday. Isn't that what wingers in Pittsburgh do?
He's playing actually really well and that's good. With are injuries we needed players to step up
Probably the 5th best pens forward this year. And 7 - 8th best player on team. For 700k that's a steal
The 7th-8th best player on a team with Sid, Geno, Hornqvist, Letang, Maatta, Fleury, Sutter, Martin, Ehrhoff, etc.? Easy tiger.
Even if he ends up.back as a speedy 4th liner that hits and chips in a goal occasionally, he's worth more than 700,000. Worse players are making more.
Dime a dozen player is all I'm saying. Not some diamond in the rough. If he leaves Pittsburgh, you'll forget about him once the next perennial bottom 6er comes in and works his ass off.
He's nothing special.
The defense of Blake Comeau in here is truly bizarre. He may be punching above his weight right now with better linemates and getting to sniff PP time with the Pens, but there is absolutely a reason he commanded only 700k in the off season.
The guy put up a 46 point year, then proceeded to be waived, traded, and left unsigned by 2 more teams. He had a combined 43 points over the next 3 seasons. Good for him that's he's found a niche, but let's not act like he was some known, serviceable winger that people turned their backs on. He drove his own career into the doldrums with streaky play and downright awful decision making.
Pens have been fortunate to pick up Hornqvist, shed Neal's salary, and see Comeau produce around 2 of the top offensive players in the world. Good for them. They still have depth issues that they should keep working to address.
