Okay, who is the goalie you have in mind? And what are they going to do when they miss?
This is the point. There is noone available at the moment. maybe in the off season or maybe not. But even if there is noone that fits the bill available that does not make it a good idea to trade assets for someone that is no better than what we have. If they cant find someone it will be Skinner and one of Smith or Koskinen. Not ideal but there are only so many legit starters out there.

Okay, I get it I disagree about Blackwood being no better than Koskinen or Smith and maybe a slight upgrade on Skinner. The benefit of taking Blackwood over some of the other guys is, the Devils ability to take a contract Edmonton doesn't want and they also have guys that would add a lot of value to a contender that could be added in to even out values.

I also understand that Blackwood may not be the first guy they'd target (as well he shouldn't be)
but he could be a nice fall back piece

Where is Edmonton getting all the cap room to resign Kane , get a goalie ,plus keep players like Jesse when he will command a raise ? I know Oilers fans rightfully do not want to move him , but they might have to if they prioritize resigning Kane and improving in other areas.
Thats why I was offer cost controlled or lesser priced players plus will take a cap dump back . Combination of Blackwood , Ty Smith , Zacha , prospects like Foote , Zetterlund , Thompson etc. plus take on cap in exchange for Poolparty .

I am not sure they can resign Kane. I'd rather they move Yamamoto than Puljujarvi, quite frankly, but the team is thin on the right side so cap casualties might include Kane, Barrie and Kassian rather than Yams and JP.

Then again depending on what happens in arbitration with the Sharks and the league Kane might get a big chunk of his salary back and sign for less than market value in Edmonton. Anything is possible. He seems to like it here.

So in conclusion I don't think Blackwood + is enough to pry JP out of Edmonton.

I think Oiler fans are thinking that we will be able to trade Tyson Barrie and maybe unload Kassian this summer.

I also think most Oiler fans realize that we aren't re-signing Kane this summer, even though he has fit in well on the ice. He chose the Oilers for a reason - he knew he would get to play with McDavid or Draisaitl and could put up amazing numbers in Edmonton this year. The guy is probably going to hit 20 goals (maybe event 25) and 35-40 points in 43 games this year if he plays every game. He's going to go for the best long term deal he can get most likely, and I just don't see how that can be from any cash strapped or budget team.

I think alot of it depends on what happens with his challenge of the Sharks terminating his contract.

Edmonton is in full win-now mode, for better or worse. Losing Puljujarvi makes us worse.

The problem with everyone you've mentioned is they're a gamble. Blackwood sucks, at least lately. Absolutely no way can we go into next season with a Blackwood/Skinner tandem, they'd get chewed up and spit out. Smith is struggling, very young, and LD isn't really a need for us since I think we'll keep Kulak, who's been very good for us. Zacha is hopeless defensively, Puljujarvi is our best defensive forward.

Right wing is our weakest forward position, and Puljujarvi is the best one we have by far. Losing him would be brutal, keeping him needs to be one of our highest priorities this offseason. Keep in mind, we also have Dylan Holloway NHL ready, who can play C and LW, so shoring up C/LW isn't a priority.

As for where the space will come from, Kassian is a cheap buyout if we can't find a taker (less than a million over four years) and Barrie will have value from his point production. Kane is the wildcard, for sure. We might not be able to re-sign him, but if we can't, it's even more important to keep Puljujarvi.

So you think that the Oilers will prioritize Jesse over Kane? I would say they should but who knows.

Yes, because Jesse should come in at substantially lower cost than Kane. All it takes is 2 GM's to look at Kane's production and think "I don't care about the off ice stuff", and all of a sudden Kane is looking at 6 or 7M per year. Edmonton can't afford that in another forward. Especially when Pulujarvi's inconsistent production could keep him at 2M if Holland really decides to grind him.

NJD needs defence but you guys aren't will to pay up . You also talk about an inflated contract like Blackwood has earned his money the last 2 years .

They just spend 9 million a season for Hamilton, traded for Graves and Siegenthaler and Subban but yep they've been unwilling to pay up.

I could be wrong but doesn't Blackwood have 1 year on his deal and Barrie has 2?

But Barrie is earning his salary and Blackwood isn’t.

I don't think New Jersey should trade for Barrie though. They signed taller Tyson Barrie for twice what Barrie makes just last offseason.

I was not being serious . Just running with the Oilers don' want to pay up for a goalie in reverse .
