Proposal: Blackwood for Gibson (as a basis)?

If the ducks moved him they could probably get 1st+conditional 1st, great prospect and roster player.

So maybe add a 1st and really good prospect
Jeez. Gibson ain’t getting this. He’s not a world beater in net anymore. I’m a fan of his and think he can be a top ten goalie on a good team but come on.. this is a lot for todays Gibson.

The ask is absolutely ridiculous....how many STARS get that type of return?

Lets recap; A first, in 2022 (probably top 5 pick) conditional first in 2023(guessing top 3 protected), GREAT PROSPECT, and a roster player?

So from NJ for example: A first, conditional 2023 top 3 protected first, Alexander Holtz, and e.g. Janne Kuokkanen???....for John Gibson, you are out of your damn mind.

I feel like Gibson is sneakily one of the most overvalued players on this website. Dude has never even been a Vezina finalist and has had a negative GSAA in the last 3 years, yet Ducks fans still ask for one of the highest returns a goalie has ever received for him.

He's still a very valuable player because you can't just look at stats and need to take those stats with context, but he's absolutely not worth the insane asks that Ducks fans on here have for him.

as an outsider on this one and a Gibson fan, yes I do think that Gibson still hold more value than Blackwood... but Gibson is not the 2nd coming of Christ as some duck fans think he is...

NJ: Gibson

ANA: Blackwood+2nd+4th
Take out the second and add an AHLer

Lots of teams need goaltending and Gibson is still well above average, isn’t he? He should fetch a decent haul.
What's the basis for "above average"?

He's had a below average save percentage in each of the last three years, I'm pretty sure (that's including this year, which obviously isn't over yet). Is that the end all be all? No, but not great. He also hasn't had a positive goals saved above expected the last three years. The fact that Stolarz has been so much better than him this year isn't ideal for optics (though there is something to be said for games played, obviously....work loads are different and Gibson still makes some very difficult saves as he has a considerably better save percentage in high danger chances).

When you pair the recent play with 5 years @ 6.4 left, I just don't love it. Especially at the cost it would take to get him.

I agree. Wouldn’t be the greatest move in the world but unfortunately, what other better options are out there? None that fans know about. Who knows , maybe a surprising deal can be made like when we traded for Schneider . No one saw that one coming. Out of all the UFA‘s and goalies rumoured to possibly be available , Id say Gibson is one of the best options (if you ignore his contract ).
Id say Keumper ,Husso ,Campbell, possibly Reimer are the only ones that are really worth looking into . But all those guys have pretty big question marks with them . Is Husso legit ? Very small sample size . Keumper a product of the team in front of him? Same thing with Campbell .
I have no clue what the Devils will do but they have to do something and cannot afford to screw it up.
Our goaltending has been so shitty for the last two years that I am willing to do something crazy to ensure we get a legit stud .
As in offer the moon on someone like Hellebuyck in trade . Anyone not named Hughes Bratt and Nico offered.

It may make sense for NJ and Anaheim depending on the deal, but this makes no sense for Gibson (not sure what kind of clause structure he has). Going from a rebuilding team to another, when his family is probably settled in SoCal.

Contender or he stays.

Last 3 seasons (including this season)

Gibson 135 gp, .9035 save %
Blackwood 105gp, .906 save %

As I said earlier, if Blackwood is going the other way there is not going to be a significant add.
Wow, terrible stats for Gibson. Blackwood still with better numbers despite the wheels falling off two years in a row.

I just hope Blackwood recovers. 2020 Blackwood was the best Devils goalie not names Brodeuer or Schneider.

Does the fact that John Gibson hasn't scored higher than a .905 save percentage in 3 seasons scare anyone else? What if he doesn't play better in a new environment and you pay a high price for name/reputation and then are immediately stuck with a backup signed for 5 more years at a starter's salary? If he had any recent success I could understand it, but he's been treading water for years.

He has a ten team nmc. Likely seven of those teams are in Canada which doesn’t exactly leave him huge latitude to insist he only be traded to a contender. He might have the veto on NJ but he can’t possibly have the clout to insist contender-only.

With Dostal coming on nicely, shouldn't you start the conversation by asking if the Ducks even want Blackwood?

This, this and this.

Dostal is the Ducks goaltender for the future. And lately Stolarz has been better than Blackwood (and Gibson for that matter). The Ducks don’t need a goalie coming back for Gibson.

I didnt make a proposal?

I said Blackwood for Gibson as a basis, I never offered anything else. Its not 1-for-1.

Things can be added, thats what Im asking people
Well ok but by that logic that would be like asking for crosby for a 4th as a basis but open to adding something else !!! You generally don't make offers with a basis like this . A 1rst, prospect and blackwood would be a good place to start as a basis

Changed the tag to speculation since it must be confusing

Speculation implies that there is smoke out there that something could happen, but falls just short of being a legit “rumour”.

This isn’t speculation, it’s a proposal, and a bad one. You should change the tag again.

This, this and this.

Dostal is the Ducks goaltender for the future. And lately Stolarz has been better than Blackwood (and Gibson for that matter). The Ducks don’t need a goalie coming back for Gibson.

And to add to that, Stolarz is signed for one more year after this one (at right around $1million). He's certainly a capable goalie for a rebuilding team. The Ducks could (probably) easily sign him to a couple more years worth of goalie duty (with a nice raise to go with his 1A status, but still relatively cheap) to carry them through the presumed timeframe of the rebuild. A 1A/1B situation with Dostal (with Dostal getting around 1/3 of the work, sheltering him a bit & getting lots of NHL exposure) should work out quite well. Over the next couple of seasons, the work percentage slowly shifting over to Dostal as he gets the experience/earns it.

'If' Gibson gets traded, the only reason for a goalie to come back would be as a minor piece to replace Dostal down in the AHL (& that's only if the Ducks other goalie prospects aren't ready to step up).

Fair point . I wasn’t sure how long Stolarz was signed for or how confident you are in Dostal . If you are that certain then I can see the ducks doing what you said. Switching gears then , what skaters /prospects / picks would it take off the Devils then to trade for Gibson?
