A #2? That is not available. How do you dump Ceci?
Severson is a #2 and he's available. Or he has been in the past anyway, I won't pretend to be an expert on his play this past year or two.

Rumour is that the Oilers actually aren't looking to move Ceci. I think they're hoping for more of an increase in cap space. Adding a Severson type could be possible if the cap goes up more than it should (based off of recent rumours it could), they move on from Yamamoto, and Bouchard takes a bridge at a bargain rate. Lots of what ifs, but that's summer for ya.

I could see the Oilers keeping Ceci for the 3rd defense pair with Kulak to give them some added depth. Broberg stays as #7 (while the Oilers run an 11 - 7 system again), with Desharnais coming in when defensive coverage and physicality are needed - if the cap goes up enough that they can afford to do that. The Oilers have 8,636,666M in space if they buy out Yamamoto. That will be more than enough to fill out the roster with re-signing RFA's Bouchard, Kostin, McLeod, and re-upping Derek Ryan, Matthias Janmark and Devon Shore if those guys are all content making 1M or less (league minimum for Shore). We'll have to see what happens with the cap before we really know if we can afford a #2 or not.

Assuming the Oilers want to improve on Cody Ceci's miserable year last year (and not stand pat, which is probably what Holland will do) who is the best RHD available for trade or a UFA signing?

Possible targets are:

Damon Severson (UFA)
Erik Karlsson (SJS)
John Klingberg (UFA)
Matt Dumba (UFA)
Kevin Shattenkirk (UFA)
Scott Mayfield (UFA)
The guys you listed have had more 'miserable' years thatn Ceci's last season.
Defensively none of these are a clear upgrade over Ceci.

I consider Severson a second pairing dman. Not a top pairing dman.

Well I don't think that is exactly true. Karlsson had a career year. He is up for the Norris. So to say he had a miserable year like Ceci doesn't make any sense.

I think Mayfield had a good year as well.

These were just suggestions and if other names pop up I am happy to listen. Can you think of some upgrades on the right side that might be available?

I editted my comment already before seeing this, as I don't know where he has been at the past couple of years, but a few years ago I think he could have been categorized as a #2 or high end #3. I'll leave that debate up to Devils fans as they'll know better than me. If he has regressed, I don't think we should have interest in him.

The feeling from most insiders I've seen is that the Oilers could actually get a decent return for Ceci. He's horribly miscast in the role he's playing, but as a 4/5 he's totally fine and it's only one year at 3.25.

Habs fans think Joel Edmundson at an extremely similar contract, similar age, and similar icetime is bringing them back a high draft pick or a good prospect, so...

As you say, this is unlikely, but I am intrigued.

Are there any $$$ rumblings about Pesce's contract extension?
Not really, I would guess between $5-6m per year and 6+ years. Defensive defensemen tend to get somewhat underpaid relative to their on-ice impact and I don't expect him to be an exception. Adam Pelech at 5.75 is a comparable, he's a bit better than Pesce I'd say but his contract was signed 2 years ago. I would hope for $5-5.5m if the Canes do re-sign him

Even with his contract, I would be all over Parayko if he was available.

Nurse-Parayko
Ekholm-Bouchard
Broberg-Desharnais
Cheap Veteran D

Ceci, Yamo, picks/prospects for Parayko
Kulak to another team for cap space.

Nurse - Severson
Ekholm - Bouchard
Kulak - Ceci
Broberg - Desharnais

Would be perfect, but I don't think the Oilers have the cap space to make it work.
That top pair would give me nightmares on their decision making. Might work out but I feel the experiment with that ends quickly.

Something like

Nurse - Pesce
Ekholm - Bouchard
Kulak - Broberg/Desharnais

Would be a decent set of defensive pairings

UFA next year!

And Keep Ceci

Nurse Bouch
Ek Gudas
Kulak Ceci
Bro

Ceci and Kulak can both step in top 4 in case of injuries.
Hope and prey that Bro evolves and becomes the Top 4 answer by playoffs.

Wanna see Brett Pesce's star fall as one of the game's 'underrated' defensemen? Trade him to a Canadian market.

I'm very happy with RNH at $5.1m for the next six years.

I think Nurse's decision making would improve drastically if he had someone better than Ceci to rely on, but I certainly understand that concern. I don't think Severson is ideal as a partner, but he may be the best available.

My issue was just with the word miserable when describing Ceci of last season. The guy was pretty much thrown to the wolves (top pairing) and held his own. He would be an ideal add for this team on the 2nd pairing.

As for suggestions, I am sticking to Parayko (who indeed was miserable last season) as a buy low target.

Oilers need to fix the defensive system more than fixing the players. Bouchard, Broberg and Desharnais were much worse than Ceci defensively but should (hopefully) all take a step ahead now that they have gained some exp
