I'm curious as to why did Boston applied top-10 protection to the 1st. It would become a 2025 1st in that case, right? 2024 is purportedly a weaker draft, and does Boston expect to be better in 24-25 than in 23-24?

I guess it's about a possible Bergeron retiring this summer, which could potentially (very, very potentially, chance of 0.1 % .. ) lead to a full collapse of their team structure. There is no other reason to protect their pick at all, as it will be #24-32. ;)

I thought we traded him to Toronto for the 23 first at first glance, 24 first? You better suck next year Boston!

Happy we were able to get a first for him.

Sad to see Bert go, as at his best he was such a good compliment for Larkin - so smart, great stick, wins lots of little battles and has lots of surprisingly subtle plays, but back issues and contract demands alongside probably being in the back half of his career make this a sensible, if disappointing in some ways, move.

You still protect it just in case shit happens. Even teams clearly in this years playoff were still protecting their picks.

It sounds like Boston fans expect Bergeron and Krejci to retire after this year and the team will owe a bunch of performance bonuses that will go against next year's cap. They were concerned about losing Pasta but it looks like they just signed him to an extension, so that is resolved for now. But they are going to have trouble replacing 2 centers who are expected to retire and likely will not have much cap space.

I love this. Another 1st round pick for a guy who put politics ahead of the team over the past two seasons, is always injured, and who simply won't have longevity in the league due to his style of play.

At the very least, with Bertuzzi and Hronek gone, we'll be seeing a lot fewer blind pass giveaways.

I'd like to see Soderblom come back up to fill this spot.

Good deal. Wasn't re-signing here, and has been injury-prone and ineffective this year. His value was pretty suppressed. This was a better return than Hronek's deal.

I wouldn't call him injury prone, I mean he did play like 5 games in row once!

I am just surprised at how quickly and efficiently Yzerman dumped guys after those three losses.

Didn't even try to maximize the return. Just GTFO. Feels like sending a message to the rest of the roster. If you aren't playing to win you aren't playing here.

He's trying to build a culture of like minded guys (Bertuzzi's vax stance definitely didn't sit well with Yzerman) but it's hard to see Yzerman committing another few years to the rebuild. Odds are good neither of those two first round picks will produce anything.

Gotta feel bad for Larkin committing to 8 years and immediately getting put on notice that he won't be sniffing the playoffs for at least two more years.

Would you have preferred they acquired to have a shot at making the playoffs before getting destroyed in the first round?

Can’t believe some people are bummed out by the return for a guy who’s been injured all year, is putting up 0.5 ppg, and wasn’t going to be re-signed. Quite happy with the return.

unprotected makes this really interesting, remember the kessel trade was unprotected and Boston ended up getting second overall tyler seguin! I know its different situations, but missing the playoffs and lottery luck, I'll be watching for sure.

People need to get real, this is a great haul for a pending UFA player who did not want to sign with us, is injury prone and is selfish.

Great trade and good riddance
I was going to reserve my feelings but I couldn't agree more. Don't let the zamboni knock you in the butt on your way out.
