Can we get a scouting report for the Bruins Board?
He is built for playoff hockey. He is very, very smart, has enough skill to play with better players, has a good release and when reasonably healthy is very contentious and physical as a player. He is probably a league average skater at best for his size. If you want to raise your son to be a hockey player, you make him watch guys like Bert play. If you want your son to be a p***y, you don't. He has had a hard time getting going this season with some freak injuries but was starting to play better the last couple of weeks.

That said, this was the right move for Detroit eight days a week. There is definitely tread on the tires for a couple more seasons of really good hockey, but I don't expect him to have a long career given his past back issues and I wouldn't give him the term this summer that he is going to ask for (which is totally unrelated to your pending cup run).

First of all, understand that unless there’s a subsequent move here, Steve is extending the rebuild. He’s not happy with the current core. So for the next 2-3 years, those of you applauding these moves, better not be the same people on here whining about how bad they suck. Hronek and Bert are both middling NHL’ers (at worst), and unless he spends up the cahoot in free agency, their roles won’t just be filled over night.

Secondly, seemingly every other comment I see here is how Boston will be trash next year. Sure, they have some off-season decisions to make, but they’ve lost 8 regular season games all year, and it’s March. 8. There’s more upholding that structure than a couple good players. They have strong youth, depth, culture, and coaching. Let’s be real. Them getting significantly worse is still a top 5-10 team in the league. Be realistic please.

Lastly, Steve still has a lot of work to do. Vrana’s $5mil+ cap that nobody wants. Chiarot’s anchor contract after what’s shaping up to be a poor signing. Then the draft. All these picks are great, but you still need to draft talent. The pipeline has some guys, sure, but obviously he doesn’t feel there’s enough in terms of elite talent yet.

I’m a proponent of these moves, as I can see with my own two eyes this team isn’t playoff ready. But let’s all digest this information properly, and understand what expectations we must have for the foreseeable future.

Hey guys - what's your take on Bertuzzi this year? I haven't watched much of the Red Wings this season, but obviously on paper he looks like he's having a down year. Has he had some nagging injuries, or just been a little snake biten?

Thanks!
Injuries. He will fit perfectly with your group and you will love him. He is due big money is the main reason why he is gone.

My opinion: I think most people have hung on to their misinformed opinions for his whole career. He is not a grinder. He is not an enforcer. He is not a fighter. De is not dirty. He is a well rounded player that is good at everything but not great at anything... but he is able to put that "good at everything" together extremely well because his hockey sense is very very good and he is willing to do all the things to play the right way.

As far as this year goes, he broke his wrist, then came back and broke his other wrist. It seems like he is still doing all the right things to put himself in the right place for high quality opportunities, but has struggled thus far to get up to speed to actually execute on those chance. I'd imagine that comes around as he plays a bit more

I'll write Bert a send-off since I did for Hronek.
(assuming his time here is over)

I really grew to appreciate Bert as a player over the years. Last year I thought he really came into his own and I thought on so many occasions, damn that is a "legit(imately good) hockey player". He improved a lot over the years and was always really competitive, and developed into a heck of a linemate for Larkin.

Funny journey too since I absolutely hated the pick when we took him. But that was a very humbling and probably needed experience to have as a uber-fan of the draft. Sometimes there are guys not on the consensus that can become good players. Just because someone isn't on your radar doesn't mean they suck.

This one I can stomach a lot easier than the Hronek trade because of how frequently Bert missed game the last few years, but I think we will miss him in our top 6. I think Raymond always played his best when Bert was opposite him, and Bert and Larkin were great together too. Ultimately though we have a pretty good group of young wingers that I hope can help absorb the loss of Bert.

I couldn't say it better. These moves signal one thing. Yzerman isn't making moves to make the playoffs, he's building a team to win a cup.

Reality is, this team lacks superstar talent. Only way to get it is from trades, free agency, or hitting on picks.

Steve has the team in great cap shape, lots of picks coming. His target is three years longer than fans want to wait.

Stream of consciousness incoming....

Industrious player with underrated skill/hands. Great complementary player (always meshed very well with Larkin). Can play up and down the lineup due to his versatility. Physical and not afraid of the hard areas.... in fact excels there. Not a great skater, but IQ and knowing where to be is good enough for him to cover this up a bit, at least on the attacking side of things. High compete when he's healthy. Plays a mostly north-south game, but flashes some east-west from time to time. Goes to the net, not afraid of contact at all. Injury-prone, history of a bad back. Not a very defensive-minded player, but also isn't really going to hurt you there. Due to his style, he should easily be a fan favorite. Is not scientifically literate.

Guys it's smart, do you think Boston will have the same year next year? This is awesome
They definitely won't. They will probably be out in the second round or sooner, so that makes this palatable.

Although, Pastrnak just signed an extension with them...so that sucks.

Right move to deal him after the two Ottawa games. The playoff ship sailed. Injury history makes it too risky to sign him long term, so this had to happen. Liked him as a player, though. Someone will over-term him this summer and regret it later. Glad it isn’t us.

He'll be a great fit in Boston. A first is a great return given his health issues and the fact we weren't going to pay whatever it took to sign him. He's also an undersized guy with back issues who plays a "heavy" game. Absolutely thrilled with this deal, I was not expecting to get a first rounder. I'm looking forward to Boston taking a big step back next year and us getting a pick in the top half of the first.

LFG!

I'm curious as to why Boston applied top-10 protection to the 1st. It would become a 2025 1st in that case, right? 2024 is purportedly a weaker draft, and does Boston expect to be better in 24-25 than in 23-24?

No one in their right mind thinks he’s any of those things. But unfortunately, on this team, he’s the closest to gritty this team has, which is saying something
