He wasn't traded he signed with them for 5,5 M. This was in 2001, 22 years ago. 5,5 M then. It is like 13 M now I guess.

Anyhow, I am fine with this deal, I don't like it, but Bertuzzi was out of the lineup almost the whole season.
I hated the Hronek deal yesterday, but now as Yzerman has obtained 2 1sts I think it is ok.

Anyhow I don't like how Yzerman impulsively handles the situation.

Yep, and part of the reason the Bruins signed him was because Ilitch trolled Jacobs at an owners meeting for being a cheap bastard. Mike Ilitch was one of a kind.

I couldn't say it better. These moves signal one thing. Yzerman isn't making moves to make the playoffs, he's building a team to win a cup.

Reality is, this team lacks superstar talent. Only way to get it is from trades, free agency, or hitting on picks.

Steve has the team in great cap shape, lots of picks coming. His target is three years longer than fans want to wait.
But that's also an indictment of his moves last Summer which made the team average and not in a position to get the elite talent available at the draft in the top 8 picks or so. You can't look at these trades and not think that the GM also deserves at least some criticism, even if you're happy with the returns.

Yeah, he built this team both ways.

Gave them a playoff chance. If they don't seem to make it, nothing prevents from selling.

Same Tampa building model. Nothing has really changed, if you look at the early GM history at 2010-17.

- Sign Free agents FOR FREE, with smart contracts. Buy ASSETS FOR FREE (only for money, capspace).
- Sell players at the deadline, when the prices are highest. Not exactly selling the same players you signed, but some players who are asked for, to GET MORE ASSETS.
- Bring in young talent, as they grow.

REPEAT.

Yes, but TB had the foundation of Stamkos/Hedman to build upon. All last Summer did was unnecssarily extend the rebuild imo.

If that were true - Larkin would have been the one traded.
Period.

Does not differ from Seider/Raymond.

Yzerman likes to bring the kids in, and surround them with solid in-prime players. Then sell somebodies, doesn't matter who.

What makes you think this was impulsive on Yzerman's part?

Copp is only 28 and will be one of the better third line centers in the league when Kaspar develops or we acquire a real 2c.

Kubalik is only 27 and is about to score 20 goals. When he was placed with Larkin he scored at like an 80 point pace. I expect he'll look better next year.

Perron is a veteran presence to teach the kids. He's not great on the ice anymore but you can't surround promising rookies with shit players and expect them to learn. He also still might get traded before tomorrow.

Chiarot was an outright bad signing.

This team was too good going into the season to try for a top-5 pick, even before the signings. At some point you have to start making iterative improvements.

There was no way for Yzerman to predict that Vrana would self-destruct and Bertuzzi's hands would turn into puck magnets.

Maybe Yzerman's trying to repeat history. Larkin plays the role of Yzerman, the captain who spent the first half of his career as the lone bright light in a series of otherwise dismal seasons, until the GM was able to assemble a critical mass of talent around him.

He better find a way to get Larkin elite hockey IQ.
Yzerman, by the way, was in the playoffs 7 times by Larkin's age. Different league with 21 teams - but still.
Two trips to the conference finals, too.

I wonder, though, if your overall point about Larkin being the captain and his career trajectory is on point.

Let's just be glad there wasn't a salary cap in 1995.

This draft is unique in that the experts are saying you don't need a top 5 pick to get a very good player, top 8 or maybe top 10 can get you one. I didn't see the advantage of ruining those chances just to become an average team. Amd I am not saying that they shouldn't have signed anyone, Perron is a great example of the kind of beneficial signing. But it's the cumulative effect of the signings that is the issue for myself.

Saw this coming but why Boston!!? They're a division rival. At least send him out west or something

BOS being good this year has no impact on the Wings divisional success or playoff timeline.

“But they could resign Bert!”

We should be so lucky and hope they are saddled with him for the next six years at 6M a pop and his back slowly implodes to dust

Real talk: does anyone think a 28 year old Bertuzzi with a fat contract was going to be a key contributor over the next 3-4 years when our window will presumably open up?

Actually yes, I could see him being a significant contributor to a team in a competitive window. Maybe not in the sense as he’s a leading scorer, but having a significant impact on multiple phases of the game. He’s doesn’t strike me as the type to get financial security and lose his drive and heart.

The problem with Bertuzzi is probably more of an issue with when the competitive window fully opens, not whether he could have been a key factor in the team’s success or not.

Does anyone have any idea what he was asking for?

One thing I like is that the pick is 2024.
Rumors that both Pasta and Krecji could retire.
If so, Bruins are f***ed.
