Dropped into the amazing Sherbrooke street Deli for lunch and I am enjoying a Little Brown Jug 1919 and I think I am in love. I just discover that although I don't love strong hops which I think has been holding me back a bit I really Dig malt. This has an IBU of 20 which I could even go up on but the malt flavor is very present. It also has a really cool beer glass.

Which sandwich u sample?

Just worked the Winnipeg Beer Festival. Highly recommend the winning beer from PEG Brewing Company on Lily @ Alexander. Their G&T Gose was amazing & won 1st place this past weekend.

Food rather good when I visited their restaraunt the next day. Been twice since the competition having a great Deli sandwich for lunch on Sunday (they bake their own bread fresh daily) then going with their flatbread accompanied by the charcuterie board today.

3 Great experiences counting the festival. Their G&T Gose was made in limited quantity. They'll be out by the weekend for those that want to try it. Tastes like a Radler but uses the same spices that are used creating gin...hence the G&T.

bottle-wise, look for Duvel. it's considered the champion of that style.

Duvel is excellent, but style wise I put it into a different category because of its much higher ABV (8.5%). I think LBJ's offering more closely aligns with beers like De Koninck, which sadly is not available here. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any other comparable beers currently stocked by the LC.

Ok so the scarcity of the product drove me to buy

I am just sitting in Peg Brewing company and the host recommended G&T Gose and said they are almost out. Server knew her stuff unfortunalty they are sold out of Smoked Beef sand but she said the Peg Deli is a good substitute and she romanced it enough to make me feel like I wasn't compromising.

Great little menu board which displays all the information below plus "Style" and "ABV"

On Tap: They carry 4 of their in house products but they also carry 1919 from Little Brown Jug, Le Sneak Belgique and Grampa's Sweater both from Winnipegs Barn Hammer Brewing company. Nice to see them cross promote their competitors products.

cans and Bottles: They have Duchesse De Bourgogne from Brouweirj (Belgium), Glutenberg APA from Montreal, and a red Race Radler from central brewing company in Surrey BC.

The G&T Gose might be one of the more memorable beers I have had. Keep in mind I find Gin repulsive yet this actually works for me. Very front of the mouth flavor profile but a very smooth finish.

Server is working a shadow shift and still has time to teach guests......she does solid product tours and has talked me into sour beer..... she gave me two samples Gluten Tart, Berliner 3.7% ABV more of a sour beer which She tells me is a west coast trend. It's not bad but less memorable. Second sample is "Life Coach" which is an ISA with a 4.7% ABV and a grapefruit flavor profile that is really nice. Kind of a non intense IPA.

Food is nice home made bread baked in house....Smoked Tomatoe soup and they prep the tomatoes in their smoker outside.

Thanks for the heads up Arther.

How I'd rank the different microbrewaries:

One Great City -(The mad Scientest is excellent as is the Tongue Peeler)
Brazen Hall - (Stout and Amber are terrific)
Torque - (There small batches are good as are most of there main line)
Little Brown Jug (Very good beer but limited selection)
Peg City (Not a huge fan of their beer)

Haha. Well everyone's tastes are different. I would rate Little Brown Jug very high but I think they only brew one beer at a time (Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this).

Cool. I don't think I've had the G&T Gose. I was just giving my own personal ranking based on what I liked, I expect everyone will have a different list.

The Peg Deli is not compromising, it is a stellar sandwich in it's own right. Goes well with a Dazzle Ship......or three.

PEG and OGC are my top faves, followed by whatever mood I'm in. Looking forward to the opening of Stone Angel and Trans Canada Brewing.

The in store daily fresh baked bread is the difference maker. Also nice to have Russian dressing on a sandwich.

Stopped in to 1919 on my way home and picked up a 4 pack and one of their shaped Beer glasses. Interesting facility that is mostly brewery with a small retail footprint. 1919 is now in over 100 locations in the city which is really impressive.

Where abouts are those two opening?

Stone Angel is in the old Vodka Rocks building on Pembina. It will be conveniently located right on the doorstep of a new RT station I might add.

Trans Canada is literally down the block from FGB, in the same complex as Luxe BBQ.

Stone Angel is pretty active on Twitter, tweeting their progress. Trans Canada little less so but still there.

I have to be honest, my expectations for Stone Angel are pretty low after perusing their web site and reading this article:

https://beerwinnipeg.com/2017/06/27/stone-angel-brewing-co/

This is pretty much as close as you can get to amateurs playing at being pros. I'm not saying homebrewers can't become successful professionals, many come from that background, but the usual path is to get some formal education in the brewing field and then work your way up in existing brewing jobs before striking out on your own.

Their first beer was described as a "Trappist Kolsch". Like really? That's just homebrewer silliness to me. Oh look, I've invented a whole new style. No, basically they probably took a Kolsch recipe and fermented it with a Belgian strain. Woo, how inventive. And the picture the had of it online looked nasty. I get it, murky is very trendy these days, given the popularity of NE IPA's. But having tried a few of those now, I will just say I would probably enjoy the flavour more if they cleaned them up. Damn things remind me of Beep, a beverage I got so sick of as a child that one sip now would probably act as an emetic.

I just see too many beers in general that are needlessly hazy. I think there is a perception that clear beer has been stripped of flavour. If you do it wrong, yeah it can but there are hundreds and hundreds of quality bright beers that show it doesn't have to be that way.

OK, kind of got off on a rant there.

Good rant though nobody. Good brewers and good breweries provide good beer. Trendy places may or may not be good, it may be more marketing than substance and it's relevant. I won't shoot anyone down until I've tried their product and I won't reproach anyone for innovation. But so much today is about style over substance (not just the beer world, everywhere) and everyone thinks "well I read on the internet..." without realizing that the internet has absolutely zero vetting process.

Ultimately time will tell. The good ones will survive. Much as it's not trendy, Bud and Bud light still dominate the beer world in the U.S. (along with their relative competitors). Are those consumers uneducated? Perhaps but don't expect them to disappear anytime soon. I still always have a pale yellow beer in the house; I also always have an assortment of different beers in the house (the pale stuff is for BBQing and guests predominantly). But I always try something new. It's a simple pass/fail test. If I like it, it will return, if not, I don't really care what a bunch of bearded, plaid-wearing trendoids have to say about it. And I really like some beers that others absolutely hate. Quality, consistent product that appeals to your taste is really all anyone should be after. If that's Bud light, well, so be it. Not my stream to swim in but if we're doing things democratically...

Hmm, disappointing. Thanks for posting that, certainly dampens the enthusiasm. Still need to give them a shot, just won't go back it it sucks.

Dear God, I hope my preconceived notions don't deter anybody from trying their products. Their beers might be very good. As I have demonstrated an ample numbers of times, I can be, and usually am, wrong.
