Picked up a Craigellachie 13 year old Speyside that is on sale through September for $15 off.

https://www.liquormarts.ca/product/craigellachie-13-year-old-single-malt-scotch/750-ml

Not a whiskey I would want to pay $75 for, but at $60 very good value. Rather light on the nose even with a splash of water, but a pleasant everyday dram with a nice light colour that suggests minimal interference with the natural processes. Sláinte!

I'm starting to think you're my doppleganger. I noted this was on sale (clearance) the other day. I haven't picked up a bottle but will this weekend. Reviews have been mixed but most of those reviews are from people that dabble in much older whiskies far more often than I do so have to be taken with a grain of salt.

So I was out fishing with my son this past week and when we stopped for shore lunch the guide had 3 beer avaiable and they were all from Lake of the Woods brewing company and were "Forgotten Lake Blueberry Ale" and I was sceptical for the same reason people are about Ham and "Pineapple" pizza but I have to admit I loved the beer. It didn't have that ****** chemical overkill of commercial lime flavoring and the blueberry was mild, distinct, and hit you in a more delayed fashion in the aftertaste. I will drink it again.

The one surprise was I was feeling a bit light headed after the first (drinking on an empty stomache waiting for the pickeral) so I waved off the second beer and I realized it was 7.1% alcohol.

The Pumphouse Brewery in Moncton makes a pretty decent blueberry ale as well. I've had it a few times but they really aren't my cup of tea. They taste pretty good no doubt just not what usually falls in my wheelhouse.

FWIW I like Hawaiian pizza. Desert and main course on the same piece of dough. :naughty:

Aah, memories. I remember when I used to drink low alcohol beers.

Now, clearly you are not keeping your liver in game shape for drinking season. I heartily recommend the Unibroue training program. Most beers are 8-10% and come in 750 mL bottles. A few weeks on their beers and LOTW Blueberry Ale will seem like Miller Lite.

Ok that is intense I would need to tackle it on a full stomache.

And yet, I'll bet such naysayers have no trouble eating roast turkey with cranberry sauce. Or pork chops with apple sauce. Or lemon chicken. Or prosciutto with cantaloupe. Or lamb tagine with apricots. Or... well, OK maybe I'm drifting a bit into the esoteric. But still, I think I've made my point.

Festa Brew 23 litre no boil beer kits are on sale at Brewer's Direct for $40 (normally $50). A quick and easy way to introduce yourself to the hobby, or just to save yourself the punishment of an 8 hour brew day cause it's summer and you're feelin' lazy and don't want to listen to the wife complain about the brewing smell. Just speaking hypothetically...

I know literally nothing about home brewing but I gotta ask a question: does that mean that you get 23 litres of beer for $40?

Roughly yes, if you make the kit as sold with the included yeast. If you've made wine kits, these aren't appreciably different. You lose a bit each time you rack (transfer off the yeast lees). Typically, two transfers: first from plastic bucket for primary fermentation to carboy for finishing, and then from the carboy back to the bucket where you add the priming sugar for bottling. You should be adding the sugar dissolved in boiled, cooled water for sanitation so you get some volume back that way.

There are tweaks you can do that will add to the cost. You might want to ferment it with a liquid yeast, or buy some hops to dry hop it in the carboy for more hop aroma. Here's a link to my brew store. The guys there are great and will help you get everything needed to get started.

Edit: Of course, if you're just starting out, there is the cost of equipment and supplies which I suppose you should factor into the cost of each batch. However, since this is a hobby, any money spent in support of it really doesn't count.

Love the lake of the woods brewing company! Sultana gold being my favorite but I'll have to try the blueberry!

Was at the lake (Pelican lake) and we decided to do a day trip to The Peace Gardens for something to do..after we were done we crossed the border and I got a 6 pack of Fat Tire for $7.50 on sale..insaine the difference of beer prices..
Also after you declare your beer at the Canadian border they will generally wave you through with no duty..not worth the paper work for 6 beer...

I've ordered stuff to be delivered to Pembina a couple of times. Total has been around $200 both times and I just went over the border to pick them up, top up the gas tank and head home and the Canadian Border Services agent hasn't pulled me in to pay duty. No beer or smokes either time though...

I was introduced to and immediately feel in love with sour beer this summer. If anyone ever makes it out to the east coast, I highly recommended trying North Brewing's white lightning or Boxing Rock's sour mash.

Paperwork is the key. I almost invariably return from the U.S. with two bottles of Scotch whenever I'm down. I have yet to be pulled inside. For a while I was trying three bottles and I made it quite a while, perhaps 3-4 times, without paying. I was actually getting nervous because I want my file to show I declare and pay without causing any grief. So I brought four in and that ticked the box and I finally had to pay. Went right back to two no problem. Worst I get is a short lecture about being over and that's it.

I am glad I don't live in the U.S. though, I'd be a complete raging alcoholic.

Dropped into the amazing Sherbrooke street Deli for lunch and I am enjoying a Little Brown Jug 1919 and I think I am in love. I just discover that although I don't love strong hops which I think has been holding me back a bit I really Dig malt. This has an IBU of 20 which I could even go up on but the malt flavor is very present. It also has a really cool beer glass.

Little Brown Jug has some excellent beer. I'm quite enjoying all the microbrewaries that are popping up all over the city.
