heading to buffalo for a beer weekend.

happy to find out Firestone Walker Pivo (considered one of the best pilsners out there) and Prairie Bomb! are on tap at Goodbar. Heading to Thin Man Brewery to drink the beer at the Almanac tap takeover.

The List:
1) Almanac Dymano Doughnut Barrel Noir
Stout with smoked malt, maple syrup, maple donuts and aged in Woodford Reserve bourbon barrels, 10%
2) Almanac Farmers Reserve Citrus
the intensely aromatic zest of Buddha’s Hand citrons with the bracing tartness of Bergamot oranges in a sour blonde ale aged in wine barrels, 7%
3) Almanac Hoppy Sour El Dorado
We blended our sour blonde ale aged in wine barrels with our brettanomyces farmhouse ale fermented in foeders to craft a complex wild ale base. Laced with flavors of stone fruit, oak, and earthy funk it’s the perfect complement the fruity punch of El Dorado Hops. El Dorado contributes aroma of pear, watermelon, and plum, 7%.
4) Almanac Lavender Honey de Brettaville
Farmhouse ale aged in oak barrels with lavender, honey, and Cara Cara oranges, 6.5%
5) Almanac Mandarina
A tart farmhouse ale brewed with tangerine and oranges, 4.3%
6) Almanac San Francisco IPA
This West Coast IPA features an explosive aroma of citrus, tropical fruit and dankness from a blend of Citra, Mosaic, Simcoe, Hallertau Blanc and El Dorado hops. Intensely hoppy without overt bitterness, a light malt backbone balances this IPA, giving it a clean finish and making it a beer to be enjoyed again and again, 6.5%
7) Almanac Tangerine de Brettaville
Farmhouse ale aged in oak barrel with tangerines and oranges & dry hopped with citra, 6.5%
8) Almanac Tropical Platypus
Dry hopped sour ale aged in wine barrels. With kiwi, mango, lime and passion fruit. 6%
9) Almanac Vanilla Cherry Dog Patch
Sour red ale aged in wine barrels with cherries and whole vanilla beans, 7.5%

Hannu: geebus - some of those sound really good. Are those available commercially in Ontario?

Edit: did some poking around. San Francisco brewery? Again, they sound very interesting.

none are available here. our Commie govt dictates what we plebes deserve to drink.

Almanac's a VERY good brewery and these are pretty tough to get beer, even in Buffalo.
PRairie BOMB! is amazing, though. available in a lot of states. maybe even BC

Jealous. Sounds awesome! I've had a number of their easier to get dog patch sours. They make some decent stuff.

I'll take your word. When I officially start driving for UPS I might just celebrate with that.

Wait until they actually give you the keys before cracking the can (seriously, don't drink and drive UPS vans).

Do UPS drivers get tips?

I'm drinking a bottle of Blueberry Vodka. I can't wait for the torture to end.

Blueberry beer sounds like a natural fit, though.

Had a fun NFL live draft with some friends yesterday afternoon. Tried the following :

moonlight-lrg.jpg

Growler - Muskoka Moonlight Kettle: Morning Dew Pilsner 25 IBU. "Aroma: Dominant melon, with some floral notes Colour: Pale gold Taste: Crisp and bitter, with a dry to medium finish. Hop bitterness and a slight Pils malt sweetness. Notes of melon wash over the palate."

How did I feel about this offering? It was disgustingly great! Very nice, crisp and refreshing beer for a sunny afternoon.

20491_product_front.png

Bottle - Fuggles & Warlock Destiny IPA IBU 62. "A light easy going malt profile with delicate hop aromas of mandarine oranges, grapefruit and passionfruit that launch your taste buds into the cosmos!"

When I first looked at the bottle....I though wow this is going to be terrible based on the cheesy looking label..but what the heck I thought I would give it a spin. Was overall satisfied with it. hoppy enough that it really popped after each sip but had a full body flavor that reminded me of drinking something like a Kilkenny.

14141_product_front.png

Can - Hop City Barking Squirrel Lager - amber lager with a distinct rich burnt orange colour and subtle noble hop aroma. Its medium body, pleasant hop bitterness and caramel malt sweetness makes it smooth and drinkable with a slight hop aftertaste

Good but not great and nothing really memorable about this offering. Is as described.

Finished the other flavors of the Mills St. summer sampler:

Cassis - Terrible. Worst thing I have tasted in quite a while.
Belgium PA - Decent.
100th Meridian Lager - best of the bunch and probably would buy again but not go out of my way looking for it.

And the draft went quite well.

Literally sipping a Morning Dew Pilsner as I read that! Agree, it is very good.

Also got a howler of Half Pints Weisenheimer, which I enjoyed immensely during the Bomber game on Friday.

Haven't been to the tasting room yet, had a couple at restaurants and the red and the white get a thumbs up. Of course, you would expect a brewery with barn in the name to do a good job on a red ale, right? :)

Yeh some people tip. But it can be rare. If they knew what we made it would happen a lot less. Lol

Try the new Winnipeg craft brewery, Torque Brewing.
Available in growlers at the Beer Store and various pubs (Forks Common, Kingshead, Peg Brew Co, etc).

Had an... Interesting experience at Barnhammer. Ordered a custom flight including their double IPA. Upon smelling it I knew immediately it wasn't an IPA, but gave it a taste anyways. Most likely their kellerbier. I politely let the bartender know this, and he said he was pretty sure it was but he'd pour me another to make sure; still the same stuff.

He came back a few minutes later and let me know I was right, they had a keg which they were unsure of what it was and thought it was the double IPA and hooked it up. Said I could keep the second 4 oz pull - would have been nice to be offered a replacement of something else I would have preferred. Didn't bother asking.

Didn't expect to have my socks blown off, and definitely didn't. The white IPA was nice. I'll give me a try another time.

survived a day in Buffalo.
started drinking at 12:30 and we threw in the towel at 9.
the Almanac Tropical PLatypus was excellent. bought a couple of Mandarina for home consumption as well.
Prairie Bomb! on tap plus a nice Grimm IIPA and a good Jolly Pumpkin collab = good beer day.
brought home $120 in beer, including a few from Urban Family brewery. excited to try their Limescicle beer. https://www.facebook.com/urbanfamil....1472461831./1115497185171321/?type=3&theater

ugh I personally couldn't do it as I am not a fan of ice-cream . just reading the reviews makes me want to dry heave as it sounds like it may be sweet tasting  . Would like to get some just for the novelty though and to give to friends but I doubt they will be open tomorrow when I head into the city.

When he says The Forks, I think he means The Common beer and wine kiosk. They should be open tomorrow, like any other outlet there. Haven't been there yet, but I don't think you can get take-away, like a growler bar.

well ain't that a .....

I honestly have not been to the Forks in quite a few years as I have had no reason to head there when I am in the city but this Kiosk has perked my interest. For some reason I was thinking of Fenton's.

big stouts are typically sweet. a # of different styles of stouts - dry stouts, sweet stouts, oatmeal stouts, imperial stouts...

this one's a milk stout i.e. it has lactose added. since lactose is a non-fermenting sugar, it makes the beer taste sweet and slightly milky.

so probably not your thing, but definitely mine. not a beer you pound back when it's 30 C outside (in fact, it's better as a winter beer) but it's nice after a big meal.

Ya. my lactose tolerance is not the greatest so that's why I would give it a snub :D but it does sound like a fun beer.

I've found my new brew supply store, Grain to Glass on St Mary's at St Anne's. Got tired of the excuses my old brew shop was giving for not having any Pilsner malt for weeks, and paid them a visit. Had a very nice chat with one of the owners. These guys are knowledgeable, and they do things the right way. Hannu, the guy even mentioned Escarpment Labs, they're trying to work out a deal with a local brewery on a combined order, to keep the shipping costs down. If you're an all-grain brewer, I would recommend checking them out.

i know 2 of the guys from Escarpment. they're doing very interesting stuff. i've only used a bug or 2 from there and never a proper mix. but a local brewpub (Folly) uses their stuff all the time.

btw, had a 2013 Bourbon County Stout last night. wife's cellar request.
