So I get we all like our lesser known beers, but what about the bigger brands?

I love Kieth's and I find Canadian acceptable. anything else better be free and cold.

I'll usually have Standard in my fridge now that it comes in cans. Very handy to have in the backyard around the pool (glass verboten).

I also usually have some Fort Garry or Half Pints in the fridge in bottles as well and those tend to be my go to in the winter as I'm not as concerned about the bottles.

I also usually have an eight pack of mixed imports around the house as well. So peak times I'll have as many as 35 beer in the fridge when I re-stock if they all come due around the same time.

With so much beer to choose from, I find it hard to buy a microbrew/craft beer more than once or twice, even if I really like it. I only have 2-3 beers a week.

I'm also finding it less exciting to try new beers. Everything tastes like I've had it before.

Had a training course for work in Wpg yesterday and on the drive back yesterday afternoon I stopped for gas in St. Claude and checked out what they had for beer (reminds me of NFLD were pretty much every gas station sells beer lol) as my beer fridge in the garage is empty at the moment (have been working way to much). They had the usual generic items but I came across a Mill St. Brewery Summer sample pack of 6x2. I have not tried any of their brews so I thought I would give it a shot and the variety of six makes it pretty intriguing.

When I got home I tried the following:

West Coast IPA - a nice tasting beer but I found it didn't have the aroma and bite that I like from a IPAs. it just had a hint of being hoppy. Still a really good tasting beer.

Organic - I really liked this beer for a hot muggy summer evening. It was very light and had a nice crisp taste that was very similar to miller high life imo.

still to go:

Belgian P.A.
100th Meridian
Tankhouse Ale
Cassis

Unfortunately, if you don't try new beers, it's pretty much guaranteed that everything will taste like you've had it before. ;)

Have you worked your way through the Belgium section? Orval, Duchesse de Bourgogne, Rochefort 10, Duvel, Mort Subite, Chimay White is a nice 6-pack of different.

i've known enough people who worked there and i've had enough of it to drink that i'd never touch that beer again.
my brother had a bottle in his fridge. nice sized snot-ball of protein floating near the bottom. nice quality control, Mill St.
they rush the beer so i find it has a corny finish to it. hope i didn't ruin it for you the next time you drink it. hah.
also, the clear bottle looks pretty, but that beer's ruined the second it sees the light of day at a store. if it's in a 6 pack, it's fine. if it's loose? forget it.

I like the Mill Street Organic as well (and the Tankhouse) but only from the bottle. Whenever I have the draft it always seems "flat", for lack of a better term.

Enjoying Founders Porter. Not really my kind of beer. Like their "Dirty *******" Scotch ale though. :)

Backwoods Basturd (aged in bourbon barrels) is just stupid. their brewpub, though, was a total disappointment.

drinking a quad that i made a year ago. swear that it stands up next to any of the Trappist quads. i wouldn't mind more cocoa or grape from it, tho

Well.....so much for that then.

I'm on a Pilsner kick at the moment, trying every one that the MLCC has.

My favourite has been Pilsner Urquell from Czechoslovakia until I saw this in a King Can.

Now it's my favourite beer. Really surprised at the price point. It's almost as cheap as Lucky & tastes damn good!!

Who knew headbagers from Alberta had such great taste!!

You do realize this is the official beer of the Roughriders, right?

Old people help me out, my memory is fading. Isn't the Pilsner label the old Frontier label from Manitoba that we lovingly called Reitnorf?

I confess to picking up Pilsner each time I'm in Saskabush. Reminds me of Standard.

Had a great night of bourbon and single malt at my friend's new place (which just so happens to be one block away from where I currently live!).

Have never been a big bourbon fan, but couldn't believe how good this bourbon was:

Changing title to booze thread. ;)

as a bourbon aside:
i'm making a move to only drinking cask strength releases. the bourbon industry's being so damn dishonest in their aging process. heat aging, additives, etc.

i bought a bottle of Wiser's Last Barrels that Ontario managed to get.
http://www.lcbo.com/lcbo/product/jp-wiser-s-last-barrels-canadian-whisky/461012#.V8CGJzkrJbU

it's actually pretty nice. really opens up once cut with a drop of water and aerated. toffee and spices from it.

I've become a fan of Cardhu. I'd recommend if you like single malts. Decent price point at $75.00

carob.15yov1.jpg

OK, now we're in my wheel house.

Thanks for the tip. What can you say about Cardhu? $75 for a bottle of 15 year old sounds like a steal.

For those who like a nice balanced Scotch I strongly suggest the Bavenie 12 year old double barrel:

It is an absolutely terrific single malt. The balance is perfect.

For a real treat my buddies and I go three ways on a 21 year old. It's like a cross between liquid silk and liquid gold.

Is it too early for me to pour one right now?

BAIT AND SWITCH!!!!

I stopped by the LC to check this out (and grab some wine for the weekend) and what they have for $75 is the 12 YEAR OLD! The picture clearly illustrates a 15 year old. Bait and switch!

Oh well, I'm not worried. I have a good lawyer.

(Just joking - he's not that good...)

I'll offer up tasting notes on the 12 year old after I've partaken. Have a good weekend everyone!
