Where was the Bears starting left tackle drafted last year?

C'mon - Using that logic why don't we trade down all the picks in the first 4 rounds and end up with a boat load of 5th/6th/7th round draft picks? This is just silly talk. Obviously you can find great players in lower rounds - but you can find more great players in earlier rounds. Did that really need to be said?

The question is whether it is easier to hit on a quality player with 1 higher pick or 3-4 lower picks. Depends on the picker of course

OKAY - I've flipped flopped a couple times on this but in my defense I have more info now than I had before, or at least it seems more substantiated now.

The question is what to do with the 9th pick now that OT/DT/DE hasn't been adequately addressed in free agency AND after picking #9 we don't have another pick until #54. I suppose trading down to pick up another pick somewhere down the draft is a viable option - but this is where my thought process has changed. I used to think trade for more picks but unless the trade down is significant it wouldn't get you a high to mid 2nd rounder. In other words if you trade down to 12 - you aren't getting a pick in the 30's/40's - and if you trade down farther than 12/13 - you aren't getting a blue chip player like you could at #9.

So, I'm more or less resigned to not getting more than one all-pro level player in this draft so we will need to get the one or two other all-pro level players in the 2024 draft. That makes me think we can solidify only one side of the line of scrimmage this year and the other side next year.

Therefore I prefer to solidify the offensive side this year so Fields and the offense can thrive to either prove or disprove Fields is our QB1 of the future. Let the offense score points even though the defense probably won't be good enough to win many games. Therefore I would like to see them take Paris Johnson Jr with the 9th pick.

I get a bust vibe from Paris Johnson. He never quite lived up to the hype at OSU. I'm not sure he will in the NFL either. And definitely not in the top 10 of the draft. If you want to reach for a tackle - then Skoronski I guess. But I'd prefer neither at #9.

I want JSN to stack up the offense. Don't care about a corner. We either take carter and risk it, or trade with someone if we don't take that special talent.

Agree with McCoy this is not good strategy from Carter/Rosenhaus

After showing up overweight and out of shape at combine this could further turn some teams off him and further increases potential, he ends up the guy on draft day who slides dramatically and becomes a focal point of draft

Just some finer details on how the trade with Carolina went down.
[The Athletic - pay] How the Bears and Panthers swung the blockbuster trade for the NFL Draft's No. 1 pick

with this little tidbit....
Poles needed help — or maybe just some advice from a friend in town. So he called Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson.

“Really, hockey is the only one where you’re trading a combination of picks and players,” Poles said. “So I just was curious.”

He had plenty of questions about how the Blackhawks valued players against picks, how contracts and age played into the equation, etc. Davidson started laughing.

“He’s like, ‘It’s a challenge,'” Poles recalled.

Like the Blackhawks, Poles asked the Bears’ analytics team to work on “wins over expected,” an advanced measurement, to measure the potential impact of a trade acquisition.

I drafted Jaxon Smith-Njigba in HF Mock draft

My two primary targets went before I picked and I felt in real life JSN would be good pick at #9 if Bears decide to go that way

I like Mooney but coming off injury they put so much on him to be #2 or #1 again (If something were to happen with Moore) and Claypool was trash and I dont think highly of him so its a make or break year for him

Moore
Smith-Njigba
Mooney

Would be a very good 1-3 at WR position

I think the highest priority for the 2023 season is to be convinced for or against that Fields is QB1. Couple that objective with the understanding that the rebuild from worst to first will require more than one offseason - the draft should first and foremost focus on the offensive side of the ball - the defense should be addressed where it can but defensive focus will be the 2024 draft.

I think the highest priority on the offense is offensive tackle. I don't know enough about the tackles in the draft to know if the #9 pick must be used to acquire that guy or if there are enough tackles where one can be drafted later - but my thinking is to get the best one available so a big check mark can be placed at that need for the next 5-10 years.

If I were going to put an offensive position ahead of tackle - it wouldn't be receiver because I don't think any of the receivers are good enough to be selected at #9, including JSN, I would select Bijon Robinson. I know running backs are not a premium position and picking one early in the draft is against conventional wisdom, but if the goal is to give JF1 more weapons, Bijon could be that dual threat out of the backfield who could be more impactful than JSN or any of the other receivers in the draft.

My pick would be Broderick Jones.

What were the top 8? Are you allowed to trade?

I wouldn’t mind if the bears lightly addressed the o-line in this draft. Next year’s LT’s should blow away this years crop, and they will have 2 1sts to address it then. We don’t want them making big reaches because of needs. Just my opinion.
Agree, but I want at least two dl and one ol with three of their first four picks.

Yes trades are allowed but didn't get a good offer

This year we were late in getting this going so not as many people or time. Usually, we start these in late Feb or early March.
