People really need to stop saying that the Bears have another capable play caller in Thomas Brown if they take play calling duties away from Waldron. Brown had a chance to play call last season for the Panthers. They scored more than 15 points as many points as they scored 0 points with him in that role.

Could he do better with the Bears? Sure. But he's a big ol' question mark at best.

Braxton, Kiran and Darnell all out. So I'm guessing Borom and Curhan will be the tackles. I have no idea who comes after those two. I thought Bates, Kramer and Pryor were all IOL??????

On the one hand, I can see multiple arguments for Pryor moving out to left tackle, Bates taking his place on the interior, and Borom playing RT over Curhan.

On the other hand, I refuse to spend time discussing which polished turd is shinier. This is gonna be ugly.

Edit: Bates has been activated to the 53 man roster. I think we'll see an interior of Jenkins-Shelton-Bates.

I'm just going to complain a bit about the decision to not pick up a Big Fat Guy (BFG) at some point as a backup DT.

Big Bill going down was definitely about the worst case scenario for the Bears' defense, and there is absolutely nothing to replace him behind him. Billings is officially playing at 310lbs. I'd be shocked if he's actually below 330lbs. He's straight up difficult to move. Pickens is 300lbs. Chris Williams is 300lbs. Byron Coward is 300lbs. All three are taller than Billings. None qualify as a BFG, and all of them are really just backup 3Ts.

Why not just pick up an adequate BFG in case this exact thing happened? NTs and 1Ts are extremely cheap, whether in FA, draft, or in trades. Even if this didn't happen, the team still falls apart against the run when Billings isn't in there because Cowart, Pickens, and Williams just get moved off their spots.

Hello All! As a former long-time Chicagoan (almost 30 years) and still a Bears fan, I need to finally chime in with my 2¢.

My opinion was that Bears should have kept Fields, traded away the 1st OA for loads of assets and then build an offensive line with those assets. Massively missed opportunity.

I'm not saying that Fields was really that good, but he was certainly adequate and with stronger support around him, the team would have been much better than it is right now.

I understand market forces, but drafting Caleb was a mistake. All of my Bears fans/friends out here in AZ agreed that the Bears should not draft Caleb and build around Fields. And then they drafted Caleb anyway.

I know the playcalling has been bad, but Caleb is not a pocket passer. The plays are not designed to take advantage of his chaos. He's shown that some of that chaotic creative stuff already, but it's not looking good.

Okay....bye.

Fields in year 4 had his 5th year option declined, was traded for a 6th round pick, and despite getting a chance to start because of Wilson's calf injury, was benched after 6 games with his new team.

He's the same player he always was. Retaining him was never an option.

I'm sorry, but the fact that there are still Bears fans out there convinced that Fields will change who he is as a QB after 4 years in the league, but can't imagine that Williams's accuracy will improve after 8 games in the league is wild.

This season would be better if the Bears did that... to what end?

That's maybe a more likely playoff team. Is it a pathway to winning in the playoffs, no.

I get all that, but there was definitely a missed opportunity to build a real offensive line. And if Fields didn’t work out with actual real support, then you find someone else coming into a rosier OL situation.

Makes sense to me, but others will disagree. That’s okay. Cuz what we have now is total sheit WITH the #1 OA.

I gave my opinion on the only team I actually like and it may be dumb to some, but that’s okay.

I never said Fields was great but Ryan Leaf (oops, I mean Caleb Williams) was a stat padder in college putting up lofty numbers against low ranked opponents while not doing much vs the good teams.
Now he has 2 #1 receivers (who seem to have given up). And a 1st rd rookie he misses more than he hits.

I said predraft that I would have traded the pick but made sure I was picking high enough to get my choice of the 3 (in my opine) clearly better team QB’s.

I’m not sold on keeping Fields as being the correct move. I’m just not convinced Williams is the guy either.

Great well thought out response.
Don’t just look at his stats vs lesser opposition. look at his late in game numbers while already having a significant lead.
It is a known that he would check out of running plays and short passes to throw 30 yard passes late in games they already had significant leads in.

Are you the guy who was clamoring for Bo Nix?

I'm sorry, I should have assumed that you were craving for a serious conversation about

Ryan Leaf (oops, I mean Caleb Williams)
JaMarcus 2.0
It does seem worth my time writing a well thought out response because you seem so open to it.

Some of us were advocates of that idea. I know @hawksrule and myself were 2 of them even though I liked Williams coming out. Never thought this team was a Caleb Williams away from contending with all of the holes they still need to address and figured they should fill those holes and then draft their QB of the future. But the good news is that the Bears do have their QB of the future NOW which I haven't said since I became a Bears fan in 2000. The bad news is once again they've done a terrible job of protecting him, giving him poor coaching and likely stunting his development a bit.

The real opinion for me at least is the Bears should've also done what I said once they announced they were keeping the pick. They should've got rid of Matt Eberflus immediately and started over.
