Gee Eriksson gets a hit not even half as bad by John Scott last year and bruins fans cry and Scott gets suspended. This is worse and Bruins fans making excuses. Not surprised.

This is not worse than the John Scott hit.

John Scott targeted the head and hit the head- and severely concussed a guy.

Bartkowski hit somebody in the shoulder blindside, followed through a bit high, and there was no injury.

ZERO comparison to be made there.

The problem is that Gionta is mushroom height. Had he been let's say 5"10 or more, that would have just been a great hit. But seeing how short he is, the impact was shoulder to head. So Bart is gonna get some time for this one.

First frame that shows physical contact.
Definition of shoulder-to-shoulder.
Refs called it right on the ice.

Well since Gionta didn't touch the puck it never would have been clean, but you're right. If he hits Foligno on that play it's likely just a 2 minute interference call.

This was targeting of a defenseless player. It's a fine in the NFL for good reason. You just don't see it all that often in the NHL. Very dirty play that was 100% avoidable.

Hit of the Year.

Perfectly clean. Calls like this is why we're headed to the No Hit League. It's an automatic 5 any time there's a hard hit.

I think he was bleeding because he landed on his face.

Which is the real problem here. With some effort Gionta could have completed the full flying 360 and been fine. Instead he lacked commitment and only landed the partial ass over tea kettle 270.

Thing is
gionta was ineligible to be hit, cause he never had the puck, therefor it is to be assumed he was not expecting to be hit, and the fact he was not expectin to be hit because he was ineligible to be hit makes it worse than it is.

If he had the puck, would that have been a legal hard heavy hit? Maybe. But he didnt have the puck...

Hahahahahha
Wow, yeah, lol...good one. The fact it was interference goes against the very notion of "perfectly clean".

I blame the ice.... Where does ice get off being so unforgiving?

Ice is the least classless of all natural properties

It was absolutely predatory. I am not disagreeing with it. But to compare it to John Scott's hit on Eriksson is A) Wrong and B) Also wrong

I just want somebody to tell me the difference between this and the Orpik hit on Eriksson last year that went unpunished. Eriksson never played the puck. As a matter of fact, it was VERY similar to this hit. It just so happened Eriksson had just been returning from a prior concussion.

Thread titles should be changed IMO. It wasn't a headshot. It was definitely interference and the penalty was fair. Hit looks a lot worse because of the cartwheel Gionta does while falling, but in no way was that a headshot.

A guy doesn't have to touch the puck, as long as it's close. And it was.

This place is so soft. Hits like that are what makes hockey the greatest. This place is so soft.

That didn't look that bad
He is half the size of almost ever other NHL player and was leaning forward.
What do people expect to happen?

How about not generalizing all Bruins fans, please and thanks.

Dont think a player like Bart would go for a headshot deliberately, but his elbow raise at the end and the blindside hit makes it predatory and he should get a small suspension. Im all for big hits, but if you're going to get that high of a hit, you certainly shouldnt be raising your elbow up in a follow through like he did.

Im a Bruins fan btw. No excuses there.
