This is probably getting lost in all of this, but I wonder if CBJ has an out not to pay him here? If the NHLPA found some seriously egregious dirt on the part of Babcock, I'm wondering if they have a way to backout of paying him with some sort of morality clause or something along those lines? Also wondering if him "resigning" makes a difference versus getting fired in that regard?
I'm not well versed in legalese or the CBA, but this isn't the traditional situation where a coach is let go due to poor results and track record.
They would. Every contract has those clauses. We can probably assume though, they negotiated a buyout of some sort. Especially with their statement saying they agree, he is now in a position where he’s more of a distraction, etc, but admit no guilt.
The NHLPA is still going to have to react here btw. They now have 3 players, if we assume Babcock is guilty, that lied, or will now be seen as liars and their reputations will suffer.
Personally, I would’ve never hired him because frankly some of the things he’s done over the years to good people, just weigh too much. He was just a cold man. That said, we still don’t know if the allegations are true. The Jackets and NHLPA still need to clean this up, for the sake of everyone still involved.
If the NHLPA found nothing and Babcock resigned because he feels he can no longer coach the team because he’d be a distraction, then the NHLPA owes it to those 3 players to announce they found nothing.
All the fans who’ve just been hoping this got Babcock fired, probably didn’t think of the turmoil it will now cause. If it’s not true, it’s already cost a coach his job.
Without the NHLPA announcing they found nothing, Jenner can’t be captain of that team now. Werenski and Johnny G both have their reputations hurt too. Not to mention the GM and President. If the accusations were true, they now have to go too because they forced out that statement. Jenner also has to go if that’s the case.
This isn’t over yet. It probably put a period on Babcock’s career and honestly, nobody’s going to miss him, but there’s 3 players who’s reputations are now on the line. More with other players than with the public btw. If you’re a young player, you’re not going through a wall for Jenner now. Not if you believe he tried covering for Babcock. Whether it leads to Jenner demanding a trade or not, we’ll see, but he’s obviously not in a great position right now.
It’s a mess. If the NHLPA runs from it, those 3 players end up in a bad spot in their own locker room.
