This isn’t someone being a big piece of shit though. This is more egregious than a faux pas, but is not evidence of the man being Satan.
I think you're looking at it from a justice perspective, ie is the "punishment" commensurate to the "crime." Professional hockey teams, for better or worse, don't operate like that. They operate 1) is this causing a problem now and 2) will this cause a problem in the future. On 2), you have to consider fact that Babcock started shit before training camp year 1 even opened, is causing problems that might- not necessarily will, but might-ramify into big problems down the line.

If you think a guy isn't too problematic now but may become problematic in the future, it's better to nip it in the bud now than let it bloom into a bigger shitshow. I'm sure the Calgary Flames wished they had nipped Sutter before the explosive climax of Tkachuk and Johnny Gaudreau leaving that franchise.

Reflects worse on Columbus than it does on Babcock. Not enough due diligence or care to check that he wasn’t up to his BS again.

Jarmo surely has to be out of cards by now. Not sure how he has survived so long with such mediocre results. Columbus is never going to be a successful organization with a culture where that level of non-performance is acceptable.

Everyone involved in the hire should go too, because it was indefensible even before this. You're telling me you can't go out and get a talented up-and-coming coach that wants one of 32 jobs? Babcock was your best idea? f*** out of here.

To be fair I never saw what was so disrespectful about that. The Modano scratching seemed way more petty

Being fair: it was an objectively bad hockey decision. Dubas and the pro scouts were correct - Spezza could still play. If we are to assume that Babcock's decision was based on who could contribute the most and not an ego play then his talent assessment was very incorrect, as Spezza proved soon after.

But we all know (now) it wasn't about talent. It was an ego play to show up a vet and embarrass him.

This was such a strange hire to begin with . I didn't think it would work but albeit i don't think it would backfire this fast

Even if they replace everyone including the coach, gm, captain they still have a problem with someone getting in and leaking all of this out.

Hopefully something good comes out of this. :(

So without scrolling through the whole thread, what’s the gist? I understand he invaded players’ privacy by looking through their phones. Why? Was he looking for spank material? Pics that he would frown upon? Blackmail? Making sure they are staying on the straight and narrow? The whole thing is bizarre and I’m guessing there is more to the story. Either way he overstepped his boundaries

The only one who knows why he did it is himself.

But it's against the NHL rules to go through a players phone

How far he went has yet to leak, except for one account of him meeting off team premises and going through a players phone for multiple minutes - which is... concerning to say the least.

There is no rule that enforces the respect of players by coaches. Plenty of players would rather win (or make money) than be respected. It is still a results based league. Firing Babs for disrespect just shows that the org was concerned about their ability to attract, keep, and motivate talent and it's potential consequences on their future success. No way they would have let him go if they were sitting high in the standings in April.

I'm all for due process, but something is clearly off with Babcock. This was his shot at redemption and you'd think he'd be on his best behaviour. Unfortunately, he just couldn't help himself...

is it actually? (genuinely asking) can anyone cite the CBA on this? I would think they would have mentioned that.

I doubt he gives an answer, he's never just came out and owned up to his bs with a simple apology.

Holy shit, I believed Biz. IM a TORONTO MAPLE LEAF FAN. I watched this guy for what? 4 seasons mess with players? screw around with Frank Corrado and Josh Leivo, mess with Mitch Marner who btw is my favourite player so that list incident pissed me off, play Patrick Marleau more than Matthews. I HATE Mike Babcock, I can’t make that more clear. There was no DOUBT in my mind that this situation happened.

But in typical HF fashion one or two people can’t read, they get tunnel vision and they want to start attacking people.

All I said is 1, a blank resignation statement doesn’t mean anything and 2. Because of Babcocks history he should have been aware that even if his intentions were pure, no one was going to believe that because he has a history of manipulation. If any other coach ask players for some photos I don’t think it would be that big of a deal because they wouldn’t think he’d use those images against them. But because it’s Babcock I wouldn’t put it past him to use that against players especially younger ones.

Y’all gotta stop just attacking people on these boards for no reason and making assumptions. I f***ing hate Babcock.
Clearly there was more to it than that. It was not an innocent mishap.

Well, this was somewhat unexpected. And of course mike commodore fanboys are gloating. Babcock is a old school jackass, but the sensitivity in today's kids is laughable.

Anyways, I couldn't care less if Mike Babcock is employed or not. Continue ripping him apart hf...

Yeah, definitely not a good look and probably indicative of other behavior. Only way it doesn’t look crazy and weird is if he was concerned about a player’s health or safety, but that’s more of a loved ones need to step in situation, not your boss

Even if he stayed on longer his tenure was already doomed. He already lost a good chunk of his players. In no world could this still function. It didn't think he'd resign this fast but this was never going to recover .

Isn't Marty Walshy a boomer. Have you read his statement?

Yup the day when the boss can be an asshole and intimidate people to work is over

Now you have to be nice, treat everyone with respect and find a better way

Agreed. Is this a jarmo killing mistake? Seems like the cbj front office is a bit of a mess, in need of cleaning?
