Confirmed with Link: Avs sign Jonathan Drouin (1 year, 825k)

There was one team I know of that was rumored to be $2m x 2. There was a deliberate bet by Drouin and Walsh that one year in Colorado would build Drouin's market back up. Which if he puts up 40 points... he's probably gonna get a 4x4 deal, so it would be a good gamble.

If we could sign Drouin to 2.5-3M x 2yrs right now would you do it? I think he has proved himself with us, being the 0.5ppg player that he is WITH a decent all around game. He has become more complete player here.

Yeah let's do it. (Recency bias be damned)

Glad to hear he has finally found his game. Most people in Montreal felt bad for the guy. If I was Drouin I would sign with you guys even at a discount. He is clicking there and I'm sure he's having fun and has improved mentally, which is worth more than money at his pay grade. He shouldn't risk the unknown with another team.

Hey if he’s willing to take a pay cut to stick around here (3m or less a year for 3-4 years) I think we try and make it work, however if he’s wanting more I think you just have to let him walk.

If I’m the Hawks I would definitely look at giving him a 4x4 and hope he finds some chemistry with Bedard.

First the sample size is still small. It is very encouraging for him and for us fans for sure but let's wait a bit longer before we sign for terms. 3M contract for him would be pretty safe though because he has been a very consistent .5PPG player but will he keep playing the way Bednar wants him to play? I think he will because he is happy here but it is still a question mark.

Second I don't think the Avs will do anything with him until they have a much better idea on Landy. That is why, as I said quite a few times so far, it is extremely important for the offseason and next season that Landy comes back during the playoffs so they know what they are dealing with in the future.

Yeah, let's see the season out first and then throw what money is available around. Would like him back though based on recent form.

Yeah I just don't see any benefit to signing JD to an extension today unless it's a multi-year deal for $2M or less. And if you're Drouin's camp, why sign that contract today?

Ultimately for the Avs, and I've said this before... We already have 5/6 of our Top 9 wingers signed for next year. Mikko, Landy, Lehky, Nuke, and Wood. Then you also have Kovalenko who's most certainly not coming to North America without some roster guarantees.

And they combine to make nearly $30M already.

Unless Landy is done(Which I don't think is the case and the Avs aren't operating like that's the case so far), I don't really see where or how they can fit Drouin into the roster for $3-4M which is probably what he gets as a UFA especially if he even sniffs 50-60 points this year. I dont really even see the money to sign him for $2M next year.

Now, if they trade a winger to make cap space for a 2C, then Drouin would be an excellent fit for a cheap winger replacement to someone like Lehky for like $2.5M.

But again, I doubt Lehky gets moved and I'm not sure moving Lehky to create space for JD is a good move.

If Bednar doesn't end up trusting Colton or Wood by the end of the season, I think you explore moving one of them. I also think both of them are kind of redundant, as they provide similar elements to the bottom 6. Neither have been bad, but we can't afford players making $2.5 + $4 mil only getting 13 minutes of ice time a game.

You have to see how Drouin plays the rest of the season BUT if he keeps this up... he is quietly doing a lot of things lately that Lehkonen does.

Hounding pucks on the forecheck, hounding players on the backcheck, going to the net, putting up points, playing well on the PP.

Obviously Lehkonen is amazing and one of the most clutch players in the league (and arguably Avs history despite only 1.5 years here) but if it saves you ~2M AND can fix other roster holes? Could be enticing to ship out Lehkonen.

Although I'm glad he's playing well as of late, let's not go offering any money yet. He's playing on a line with Rantanen and Mackinnon, my grandmothers corpse could put up 25 points parked in front of the net on that line.

It's less about the points and more about Bednar's trust for me.

The fact that Drouin has averaged ~20 minutes the past 5 games and looked good in those minutes is the biggest factor in keeping him.

You must have loved Compher. :sarcasm:

For all the flack he got here, Compher wasn't bad.

He was frustrating to watch at times and always left you wanting more, but he fit Bednar's system and he was a safe option. I don't think Bednar's assessment was wrong in retrospect, considering he's getting 19 minutes a game in Detroit and has 24 pts in 34 games.

I honestly thought Colton would be an upgrade to Compher at a lower cost... I was definitely wrong in that regard.

I'm just being a smart ass.

The issue I see is if Drouin plays like he has recently to close out the season, Walsh is going to push him to get that last big guaranteed contract (and that is the smart move). This is Drouin's last real chance to get a 4-5 year deal. He might be willing to cut some off... but if he's out there getting $5m x 4 contracts... he's not coming here to be a 2-3m guy.

Again I say just sort things out this offseason. No need whatsoever to sign extensions now. If he gets a lush offer from another team, good for him, and good for the Avs because obviously he did enough to entice another team to offer it in the first place.
