Confirmed with Link: Avs sign Jonathan Drouin (1 year, 825k)

Drouin has already banked money that is completely life altering; however, pro-athletes have a very short window to earn and I wouldn't blame JD one bit if he continues to have a good season and then cashes out somewhere else.

Would be nice if he stuck around but seriously, it's to our benefit that he prices himself out. I really think if we get a decent, mind you not earth-shattering, but merely solid and consistent 2C before the deadline, it will all become the normal crapshoot contender's deal with....health, luck and not getting goalied by Godzilla.

I agree it’s not retirement money, but financially it can still make plenty of sense if he stays with the Avs for another year or two. He’s gotten better as the season goes on, and I still think there’s plenty of room for him to grow. He never lost the talent, he lost his confidence.

He’ll be ~30 if he stays with the Avs for another year or two. If he becomes a 60 pt forward and a line driver, he could earn more than signing with a different team at the end of the season.

This is the way I see it, it's likely he moves on, but if this isn't just a hot streak, and he's willing to work on truely having a breakthrough season understanding what it takes then I could see it.

However if this isn't just a hot streak there is a real chance he does some damage in the playoffs that will price him way out.

We'll just have to see where it goes and how much if anything they can pay him beyond his current aav.

I hope it continues. He's been legit lately in pace, effort, offensively and defensively.

If we could sign Drouin to 2.5-3M x 2yrs right now would you do it? I think he has proved himself with us, being the 0.5ppg player that he is WITH a decent all around game. He has become more complete player here.

In a vacuum yes, but this team has a very bad impending cap crunch if Landeskog comes back that will likely cost us having players like Drouin barring extreme moves.

You wait..

See how everything goes, and see if there is a fit in the off-season.

I know about that. A lot depends on their willingness to cut from defense and what happens with Landeskog.

It's an interesting question. We need quality depth and if Drouin keeps playing like this we're going to lose him for sure.

A movable contract like that is great for the team. If he regresses, then you get rid of him. The player would probably prefer a long contract for max guaranteed money.

Rantanen - $9.25M
Landeskog - $7.0M
Nichushkin - $6.125M
Lehkonem - $4.5M
Wood - $2.5M

The only way I'm spending another dime on Drouin, is if 1 of these wingers is sent out in a trade. We cannot afford to spend ~$33M on our 6 Top 9 wingers.

Drouin will be our #2C :sarcasm:

Yeah that makes total sense. Like if Landy is not returning really being the most likely there. If Landy isn't returning then you need a cheap fringe top six guy there with hopefully the addition of a 2C.

Drouin could be a good fit in that scenario depending on cost and how he finishes the year.

I wouldn’t give him anything over 2M TBH. A lot of good recent production came on the PP. He won’t get PP1 time once Lindholm is here.

Could not possibly care less about his future beyond this year. If he snags a lucrative deal somewhere else that’s a huge win for the Avs.

Not a chance....the dude isn't even pacing for 40 points. Just 10 even strength points on the year too -- he's had pretty generous powerplay time. I can't knock his effort level, either, but it's not like he's a stalwart two-way player or forechecker. Wouldn't go a penny above about ~1.5 million, maybe 2, for one year. He's certainly an NHLer, but he's also a readily replaceable talent.

The other thing with Drouin, ignoring the money he might get... Where does he play if we get Landeskog back?

Nuke - Mack - Mikko
Lehky - 2C/RyJo - Landy

Our Top 6 wingers will already be set at this point. Wood as a 3rd line winger. And then you have to remember Kovalenko will be coming over and almost certainly assured a roster spot to start the season. So then you have Kovalenko/LOC where realistically one of them end up as a 3rd line winger.

I just don't see a spot for Drouin in the lineup if Landy returns. Even ignoring the financial situation we're pretty well set on the wing next year.

IMO the only scenario where Drouin coming back makes some sense is if the Avs move a winger to create cap space for a 2C, and then you re-sign Drouin for like $1.5M as a cheap winger replacement for whoever we lost.

Yeah, it really only makes sense that way. We can't afford to add a 2-3M 3rd liner and a 2C with Landy returning.

Still if Landy can't go, it's nice to have a natural fit as long as he can maintain this level of play.

For this year if Landy comes back you can make a decent third line of Wood-Colton-Drouin.

Next year probably no cap space for him unless he comes back sub 2 million or a guy like Rants gets moved or maybe G and Bo.

The Avs have an abundance of two way wings and not really much playmaking there. Not much playmaking in general. Colton might be the 4th best playmaker on the team.
