The fact that he's a RHS is a welcome addition. That adds balance to the middle 6 and another RHS shooter for PP2 which was needed.
You know Bednar will absolutely love that. He often said during pressers that he needed JTC in the top 6, on the PP or to take faceoffs just because he was right handed. Now he'll have 2 options.

47% on faceoffs, not great not terrible.

I think the signing fits the team really well. Newhook will probably be ready next season. In the meantime, with the defense and Top 6 as it is, this is clearly the team to beat.

Rodrigues will be motivated to earn big fat multiyear contract.

Meyers, Newhook, Compher, and Rodrigues are all in contract years and competing for significant roster spots this season and beyond, which is a great position for the Avs to be in.

Come to think of it the only players in the bottom half of the roster signed beyond 2023 are O'Connor, MacDermid, and Francouz, and even then those are only 2 more years.

Overall that's very prudent management, as it keeps the commitment to depth guys short so they're constantly hungry and motivated.

You’ve got a guy on a contract year who can play a middle six role for 2 mil. He’s not kadri of course but for that value and term, it’s great.

To those saying we should’ve banked cap space and traded during the season…I don’t know why you think moves are easier mid season. Players get more expensive the more teams know the Avs need them. Trading is all about leverage and going into the season with no leverage and a real likely need to fill a middle six c role is asking for losing every last asset we have for a rental.

Hope ERod shows up well this season and lets us play the deadline to our advantage rather than being desperate. Good move CMac

Well it was about damn time, I was expecting this in the first week of FA.

I think he will fit very well on the team, the FO did a nice job shoring up our depth, and the team is in a good place to make the playoffs and make another push for the cup (after the TDL yields us our rental 2c)

Lots of talk of a TDL 2C. I don't see a need. Between Erod, Newhook, Meyers, and Joseph Taylor "Mad Dog" Compher there will be plenty of options and someone will rise to the occasion.

Good signing. I see this as the Avs' security blanket for the 2C spot until the TDL. I think they should still try Newy at 2C to put to bed the CvsW discussion about him and if it doesn't work they still have Compher and ERod as backup plan until the TDL. By then if nobody has taken the job and ran with it they will have plenty of accrued cap space to try to get a higher end 2C. It also opens up the possibility of Compher being included as a throw-in in a trade for a more needed piece later in the season. For example if there are no obvious 2C available at the TDL I could see Compher ++ going to CHI for Kane to drive a line with Newy/ERod at 2C.

This signing gives the Avs lots of options later on. Well done.

This mostly buys the Avs time until the deadline for them to reassess. Either the new additions work out and they make a push to bolster the lineup, or they don't.

I'm confused by this. Are you saying this if the additions work out they should add at the deadline? I'd say in that situation to stand pat. If, somehow, all the 2C options fail then go out and get a top 6 player.

It need not be so black-and-white. If they're in position to add and feel a need to do so, then yes, do it. If they're still in that position and decide to stay the course, I'm fine with that too. Just because Georgiev, Rodrigues, et al work out relatively well doesn't necessarily mean they gotta stick with those options at the deadline.

It's a good depth move for cheap, and we still have cap space to bank for the deadline, too. He's a legit NHL player for the third line and has proven that he can produce when moved up the lineup in case of injury. I like it, even though he isn't a 2C. There just weren't any 2Cs out there in free agency. I expect him to fight it out with Newhook and Compher for the job, and then if none of them look like the answer by the deadline we can go fishing for a better solution then.

I would've signed him near the start of FA so yeah, this is a good move. I think it's steal of a contract if he produces like last year and probably not bad even if he doesn't since he should be a good system fit and still help the team.

IMO, this was the best possible move to make right now. Avs don't need help in the regular season so they can roll with him as 2C for now and then try to acquire someone at the TDL.

That’s a steal of a deal.

Wish they could have got him for 2, or 3 years, but this is great.

He should slot in nicely on the 3rd line and it gives Bednar another Swiss Army knife player that can be moved around the lineup.

Not a fan of the move, much rather would have preferred the cap space so we have more flexibility at the TDL. We don't really know what ingredient we'll be missing at that time.

That being said, I hope Rodrigues proves me wrong.

The thing is, they’re still going to accumulate a lot of cap space for the deadline.

The advantage of waiting is that you know exactly what your lineup is missing. Maybe you have a season-ending injury to one of the two goalies and you need to spend assets to fix that. Maybe our top six clicks into place but our depth is having trouble producing enough. Maybe EJ is so hungover from the off-season that you need to find another right handed defenseman that can penalty kill for depth.

Also, if Byram stays healthy and has a monster year and hits one of the Schedule B bonuses, this signing means that we'll have overages that will cut into next year's cap space, which we already know is going to be very tight due to MacK's $15m AAV contract.

That will now depend on roster size, how healthy we stay (if we need to use LTIR for any reason, we won't accumulate as much cap space), and how likely it seems that our ELC players will hit their bonuses (unless the front office is willing to sacrifice cap space next year for a run this year). Whereas before, we were on track for a lot of almost guaranteed space.
