Newhook is scoring at a rate of 1.85 points/60, which is better than the per-60 scoring rate of 8/12 of Kadri's seasons. Not saying that Newhook is better than Kadri, and obviously he's being sheltered a bit in terms of matchups, but in that context his scoring rate seems promising, especially given that he's mostly been playing with 4th line level wingers.

Per 60 points are one of the most overrated stats in the game. It skews towards skilled players who are limited in minutes. I'm old enough to remember the Grigorenko pimping of 1.62 per 60.

Newhook is skilled I'm confident that he is a future 55 point player. I'm not confident it will be at center. People are being way too touchy about this. If you don't like my evaluation, move on. Wouldn't be the first or last time I'm wrong.

Very few of which mattered. He was the epitome of a stat padder.

The fact he's scoring while regularly playing with the likes of Compher and Jost speaks to his ability.

Those are the exact two players Kerfoot played with!

Given 2nd line duties, which is clearly not happening with Newhook's line being third on the depth chart. Call me crazy, but I think he might produce more given a spot on the 2nd line this year.

Kerfoot averaged less than 11 minutes a night ev (which is less than Newhook this year), excluding Duchene... that would rank 11th on the Avs that year. How exactly is that 2nd line usage?

Newhook is 9th amongst forwards for ev usage.

Newhook will produce points in the NHL... he's a skilled forward with a good NHL shot. I'm not debating against him providing offense in the NHL.

It was him an Soderberg on the depth chart and Kerfoot absolutely failed the eye test while putting up empty stats. Laffs fans were convinced he was an elite 3C and a better asset than Kadri.

Yeah and Soda was the #2C that year by all measures.

Say what you will about Kerfoot, but he has acquitted himself nicely as a 3C in Toronto. I was cheering him leaving as I was not a fan of his, but he's playing excellent hockey up north. He's not as good as Kadri, but Kerfoot wasn't the main piece.

Kerfoot popped in 19 as a rookie in a mostly 3C role... nobody thought of him as a 2C.

Not really fair to compare a 23 year old soft, one dimensional, not very good defensively rookie, who potted 19 goals (which included a few lucky and EN goals) to a 20 (now 21) year old rookie who's better defensively, and much grittier, with a penchant for clutch goals, and could score 20 himself, when talking about whether either could be 2C's.

That said, I'm not sure whether Newhook will end up a 2C or a consistent top 6'er, but I will say his last game where he played on the 2nd line with Kadri gave me some good home that he might.

You got me... there is no difference in matchups, responsibilities, and minutes as a 2C vs a 3C... and all that matters for a center is the goals they score...

Exactly this , it is just your opinion and lots don't agree. No biggie.

Newhook is tied with NAK for GF% for our forwards. He doesn't kill penalties 'cause rookie, so can't fault him there. He does suck at faceoffs, but who on the Avs doesn't? (Kadri wouldn't, if he wasn't tossed so often).
IMO, he ends up a solid top6 option, not sure it will be at center, but I believe he deserves a real shot at it.

I fall somewhere in the middle on this discussion on his skating. To me, his skating doesn’t really stand out that much. Now, maybe that’s just because we have guys like Makar and MacKinnon on the team. I don’t think it’s a liability, or anything like that, but to reach his full potential it could be a bit better.

He’s performing pretty much how I expected him to perform so far this season. I thought he’d get more minutes than he’s been getting though, so he’s making the most of his opportunities. I do see 2C potential and have always thought that’s where he looked most natural. I don’t feel it’s a sure thing, but they have a player here for sure. He’s definitely not going to be Tyson Jost. He’s got more skill, a better hockey brain, and a better shot.

Bednar has had him on the PK a bit before the break for the ASG. Kadri has also been on the PK for the FO ability (when he doesn't get mysteriously tossed for being Nazem Kadri), and he's done some good things there.
