Here's what the standings would be putting the Canadian teams in one division and dividing the American teams into four based on region as I have proposed:

Central:
1. Minnesota Wild - 76
2. St. Louis Blues - 69
3. Columbus Blue Jackets - 68
4. Detroit Red Wings - 66
5. Chicago Blackhawks - 49

East:
1. Washington Capitals - 90
2. New Jersey Devils - 74
3. New York Rangers - 68
4. Boston Bruins - 66
5. New York Islanders - 65
6. Philadelphia Flyers - 62
7. Pittsburgh Penguins - 58
8. Buffalo Sabres - 54

North:
1. Winnipeg Jets - 92
2. Toronto Maple Leafs - 79
3. Edmonton Oilers - 78
4. Calgary Flames - 70
5. Ottawa Senators - 69
6. Vancouver Canucks - 69
7. Montreal Canadiens - 66

South:
1. Dallas Stars - 84
2. Florida Panthers - 83
3. Carolina Hurricanes - 78
4. Tampa Bay Lightning - 78
5. Nashville Predators - 55

West:
1. Vegas Golden Knights - 82
2. Colorado Avalanche - 78
3. Los Angeles Kings - 73
4. Utah Hockey Club - 66
5. Anaheim Ducks - 61
6. Seattle Kraken - 58
7. San Jose Sharks - 43

Top 4 teams in each division would qualify for the playoffs. While the American teams do their first two playoff rounds, the Canadian teams do a series of seeding games (similar to the ones in 2020) to determine the final seeding for the North Division semifinals, which would take place at the same time as the American semifinals.

So four spots for 7 teams on one end of the bracket, and four spots for 25 teams on the other end? Makes sense
